1. A backstory, or established background narrative.
2. The first indigenous people remember their origins through oral histories passed down through generations. These stories describe the creation of the world and how first people came to live in it. They embody a view of how the world fits together, and how human beings should behave in it.
3. Origin Story is an essential understanding in this unit because it is how the indigenous people believe they came to be on earth. This is obviously sacred and important towards them.
4.

1. The deliberate killing of a group of people with the goal of destroying that group of people. In the context of Indigenous people, genocide relates to Columbus and the first colonizers commiting/attempting genocide on the Indigenous People.
2. Columbus took 1,500 Arawaks and many more killed themselves to avoid this.
3. This is essential to understand because it is an important part of interaction between colonizers and Indigenous People.

1. An indigenous confederacy is a group of tribes that band together, most often in order to fight for land or resources.
2. The most famous indigenous confederacy was the Iroquois Confederacy, which was a group of five (later six) tribes who fought for their land in what would now be upper New York. It is the most well known example of this.
3. It is essential because it showed the extent to how far the indigenous people would go to protect their land. They knew that it was being stolen from them, and tribes that were normally not friendly stood together in alliance to fight the colonizers.
