The Battle of Honey Springs took place on July 17th, 1863. The Union won the battle and had 77 estimated casualties whilst the Confederate forces had an estimate of 181. The Confederate forces led by General Douglas H. Cooper were fighting with the Union led by General James G. Blunt. They fought with each other because they wanted to determine who would control West past the Mississippi River. A reason the Confederate forces lost is that they had misfires caused by wet powder and it only got worse when it rained. The Unions force had 3,000 men that were white, Native Americans, and African Americans. After the battle the Union won the territory. This was important because the Union won what is now Oklahoma.

General Douglas Hancock Cooper was a Confederate officer. One of his goals was to gain control of the Indian Territory. for eight years, he was federal agent to the Chickasaw and Choctaw tribes, while he also had influence of the other tribes. Cooper fought with his men, unlike other leaders. Also, he understood the native's culture and sought to capitalize from their skills as scouts, skirmishers, and raiders. The Confederate authorities didn't have enough weapons to their men and he became discouraged. He felt real concern for the natives. On July 1864, he became the district commander for the territory.

Jefferson Davis thought the five civilized tribes disliked the Federal government. Edward Clark, the governor of Texas, wanted the Confederacy to recruit natives. In 1861, Pike traveled to the Indian Territory as a commissioner. He created a treaty that greatly benefited the five tribes. Unlike how the Federal government treated them, they were made near equal to whites. The commissioned Native Americans failed though, because many left and went home. Since they focused on becoming civilized, they were inexperienced in military training. This is not the first time this has happened. Before, Douglas H. Cooper raised the first Choctaw and Chickasaw Mounted Rifles.
