I used the slab method to make a cylinder which I cut in half to make two pieces. Then with those pieces I learned how to fit them together like puzzle pieces, by cutting slots in the sides and slip and scoring them together. Although, I needed more space to fit my tools and height to meet the requirements, so I made an additional slab, and used the same technique to attach that to the second layer. At this point I thought this was going to be the structure and all I had to do was wait until it was leather hard and carve in it. I took many creative risks as well as struggled a lot with how to make something appealing to the eye but also functional in regards to holding all of my tools. The first risk I took was cutting 3/4 of the third layer out. I did this to notch my sponge into (although I later found a better use for it). Next, I created another slab and cut it in half with the string. I then attached that to the side of the first layer. I placed it at somewhat of an angle and molded it into the outside wall of the first layer. At this point my piece was lacking fluidity or somewhat of a theme in my eyes. Also I was struggling to find a place to fit the rib. Then, with the help of mr. stout, we came up with the plan to notch it into the side of that newly attached layer. Not only was this a major creative risk, It also opened my eyes creatively and it was then that I saw it kinda looked like a snail. The actions I took after that were to enhance the snail idea which left me with what I have now. I started playing around with creative elements that incorporated the use of coils and creating textures with that. I also added a little baby snail on top for design purposes mostly. Overall, in this phase I was the most relaxed and I also had the most fun refining and detailing my piece. I would say I definitely touched on my ability to tune out and just let the creative process take over. I used a metal tool and stamped it into each coil. In this stage yes I did have reference photos although when molding my initial design I combined all the ideas into one and just did whatever I felt. There were certain features like the nose and lips that I knew I wanted to be a certain way, although for the most part I just kinda dug my fingers in and started.
