Project Feedback

PDF (53)

There is a worthwhile motive behind the project – to raise awareness about protecting insect populations; you have examined the cause of insect decline, its impact and identified butterflies as focus to inspire public engagement with the issue. You have analysed websites set up by other organisations to promote the issue and set up a questionnaire to investigate how people interact with such platforms.

To move to the next stage of your project you should critically interrogate your proposed solution – how will selling butterfly artworks help to tackle the problem you have identified? Is it purely about generating profit to donate to the cause – how would the money be used- would it be given to research or a charity? Are there different ways you could use your design skills to solve the problem you identified? For example designing a way for members of the public to become more personally and actively engaged with an aspect of butterfly conservation?

Brief (54) The basic components are in place but not enough detail. Research methods – be much more specific, list resources and methods of gathering data.

Target audience is a bit board and vague – this will make the job of reaching the target audience in an effective way more difficult for you as a designer.

Sketchbook (43) – Some collecting of materials, sketching and note-taking/ mind mapping in evidence but generally not enough volume for a whole project’s worth of sketchbook. It is not yet clear how any of this is feeding through to actual design development on the project. Little development work in evidence, quite scrapbook-like. Not a passing grade for the sketchbook but you pass the project overall

About feedback of project…

Question
feedback：Using design techniques to "design a way" to engage users in butterfly conservation means to "increase user experience" . But my question is: how do I represent "this way"? And how can I use art sales to make users feel involved in protecting butterflies? Do I need to give my work an theme and meaning？Can I consider critical design, and make some "futuristic" works and models to get users involved. I mean Explore the possibilities of the future.

As mentioned in the feedback, my survey resources and target group are very vague, so is questionnaire survey a good method?
Does the number of user surveys need to be large?

As for the project schedule: It was mentioned in the feedback of last semester that I should spend a lot of time on user research and the production of art works or models about butterflies.

First of all, it is a project about "butterflies". The inspiration for this project came from the fact that I love butterflies. I realized that the number of butterflies is decreasing and there is very little attention paid to their conservation.

In the early stages, my main research was on butterflies in the UK. Currently there are 26 butterfly species that are about to disappear in the UK, and at the same time the UK has set up Butterfly Conservation Organization and some wildlife conservation websites.

However, the traditional website model seems to be difficult to draw people's attention to the conservation of the species, and the large amount of science and articles do not stimulate people's interest. Therefore, this is the main goal of this project, how to let people see the beauty of butterflies and at the same time, to trigger a reflection on the destruction and disappearance of the other side of "beauty".

1.Butterflies lose powder on their wings

2.The butterfly wing pattern will slowly disappear.I wanted to make a piece of artwork design or an installation design, I was inspired by the butterfly's wings falling off the powder, as time the pattern is slowly disappearing or changing from colorful to colorless.

To summarize the project in one sentence: it is an art installation design about "Butterfly Conservation", which demonstrates the process of butterfly's beauty to its demise, triggering people's regret about the gradual destruction of "beauty" and focusing on this species.

The logic is like this, at first I started from the angle of art merchandise, hoping that customers would buy my butterfly merchandise to draw attention to butterflies, but it is doubtful whether people can think about the current situation of butterflies in this way, the question is how to raise public awareness to pay attention to this creature, and then I started to look for references: a butterfly's symbolic significance in the art works of different countries in different periods, and some inspirations I got from the feedback last week: beauty and destruction, and the importance of the butterfly. And then I started to look for references: one was the symbolism of butterflies in the artworks of different countries in different periods, and the other was inspired by the feedback I got last week: the beauty and the destruction.

In the early stage, I would like to sell some butterfly installations through my website, but this method does not bring people's attention to the fragility of the butterflies and the seriousness of their deaths. Maybe people can only see the "beautiful" side of butterflies, just beautiful objects, so in the later stage, I'm not sure if the website design will be helpful for my butterfly installation design, but if it can be established, I hope it will serve the users to understand the story and concept.

The next thing to think about: I want to focus more on how to make people participate in the process of butterflies from beauty to disappearance, how to show the fragility of butterflies, and provoke people to reflect on the destruction of nature and the disappearance of butterflies!
