I am from Mexico. I arrived in the United States when I was 13 years old and my parents registered me at the local middle school. The first year I was at the school I felt so alone. Every time I went to the school cafeteria, the food was always American burgers and French fries or other food like that. I longed for tacos and beans and rice. I felt so far away from my home and my culture. I remember one lunch time I felt so alone. All the children were eating American food and talking fast in English. I sat at one table and felt the tears rolling down my cheeks. I felt so alone and I only felt better when I met another student from Mexico in my science classroom. She helped me to understand the content of the class and she and I would have lunch together. But I continued to hate going to the school cafeteria. The yellow cheese, the big potatoes and the fried meat make me feel so far away from my wonderful home town and cuisine.

He forced us to do difficult exercise like high jumping, far jumping or playing football even when we were females, we could not get high mark in PE.

Hello everyone. My name is Van. I am from Vietnam. I have studied English since I was in the third grade. Even though I liked this subject, I have to say that the English lessons were quite boring and passive. In almost all lessons, we just sit down, listen to teachers, do the grammar tests, and then correct our answers. There wasn't much listening or speaking involved. This situation doesn't really cause us to feel annoyed or sad, but it really makes us feel bored and unmotivated.

I come from a central province in Vietnam. So, I went to a local high school when I was around 15 years old. Looking back at that time, an unpleasant experience keeps flashing into my mind. Even though I was not good at subjects like Maths, Physics, Chemistry, I was registered to be in those classes as they were the most popular subjects. People, and by people I mean parents and teachers and society, believe that the only way to succeed in life is to spend a lot of time learning the three subjects. I struggled a lot in the Chemistry class; I didn't find it interesting. It was not easy, either. My heart beat so fast every single time my teacher was thinking which names to call on to solve a problem. Learning brought me anything but joy.

Luckily, my parents were then convinced to let me change my specialised subjects. I, after all, was allowed to follow my subjects of interest: Literature, English, Maths.

When I was 13 years old, I finished my primary school. I was excited and a bit nervous because it had something new for me at there. I rode bike to school which was 7 km from my house. It was my first time for long distance of riding bicycle. At school, I met a lot of students who came from different primary schools. I was happy to meet and know a lot of friends there. It was a such funny time and I remembered that I was sick a day after I rode to school that far from my home.

I went to a high school for the gifted in a province in the central of Viet Nam. There, I met my best friend and soon became boyfriend. At that time, my teacher and parents didn't allow me to have a relationship because they think it was too soon to have a lover. They thought that the relationship would destroy out study and performance at school because we couldn't concentrate on the lectures. We, however, supported each other a lot in studying and encourage one another to achieve our goals in study and work in the future. We could not understand why the "grown-ups" were so serious. They forbade us to be in touch, so everything we did must be in secret. Sometimes we were caught by our classmates and they told to my teacher. That was so annoying and the time when we were in high school was a nightmare. We did not have the right to do whatever we want.

When I was a high school student, I always felt a lack of confidence and discomfort when going to the Youth Union room in my high school as there are many people dominating and everything looked like formal, particularly my teachers weren't actually friendly. Sadly I have to say that. Since then, I rarely go there

I am Quynh from Lao Cai. I have been working as a science teacher for sixteen years. When I was a student at secondary school, I was a timid student. When attending English class I felt nervous, I could not read words clearly, and I had problems in pronunciation. One time I watched program which illustrated the road that one student applied to improve her English, this evidence promoted me find the ways to learn English. One of the best ways for improving English skills is to learn and to share together. Therefore, I established English club for science teachers that focus on practicing English skills, especially topic how to apply English in STEM class.
