Planes were initially built with wood and canvas and over the first decade of aviation developments they started making planes with steel parts and panels. Using steel parts to make airplanes became normal and there were then 4,600 American airplanes built by 1928. The most people that an airplane use to be able to hold was only 32 people! and now there are about 400 to 500 people going in to airplanes plus luggage and mail as well air planes back then weren't even able to hold mail yet.

War planes were very rare in the 1920s and more than 10,000 air planes and 30,000 air craft engines were auctioned off by the air force. Planes were everywhere and every year there were bigger and better models. People also started getting on planes and traveling places because of how good and sturdy the planes were.

Returning soldiers from World War 1 made a living by traveling around the world and showing off their aviation skills and taking paying passengers for rides in the airplane. Brave women and men would use airplanes to race in the air, set different aviation speed and distance records. The pilots who participated in these different aviation activities were treated like "royalty" and "movie stars"
