As the creative writer of the group I will be producing a feature article on the cause we’re supporting, which is funding money for special needs children (especially those in remote areas). The feature article will also talk about what the money will be utilised for (equipment, the building of extra support centres, etc. I will also be interviewing parents of special needs children, teachers and principals. Parts of the interview will available in the feature article and in smaller interviews available in the brochure. The feature article itself will be placed in the website.

This will be produced in collaboration with Jasmine as her discipline is screen arts.

I aim to use a feature article to persuade the general public to donate their money and also buy tickets for the cause. So not only will the article be informative, it will also be emotive as I want audience members to empathise with the situation. I will include facts I find through research on the current issue, for example as explained by Australian Human Rights Commission (2015) how boarding schools don’t have the means to provide care for students with special needs or how schools in rural areas have little choices for special needs students, they either don’t have ABA programs or the units required for them. I will also incorporate statistics of disabled children in our schools, currently there are 62,000 special needs children. This will illustrate the magnitude of the help that is required. Interviews will be conducted to draw on the real life situations and to give an insider perspective on the problem. As listed by the department of Education (2015) the types of schools I will visit will be from areas such as Fitzroy Crossing, the Kimberly region, and the Goldfields. I shall also interview families from here.

The feature article will be somewhat similar to this rticle as listed below as it illustrates the lack of programs for special needs students.

http://www.abc.net.au/rampup/articles/2011/07/05/3261260.htm

(ABC 2011).

Interviews: All information will be retrieved from interviews of either parents of special needs children (both in rural and non-rural areas), teachers and principals (from remote/rural areas).

Natasha McFarlane

I’ve chosen a feature article for the website as it allows me to creatively mould the facts and interviews into a piece that strikes a chord with the audience. It will be in depth to allow audiences an insight into the currents problems, this way they can see how it’s affecting everyday Australian families. The feature article will also explain how the proceeds will be utilised so the public understands we are a genuine company only trying to assist those in need.

The smaller interviews are basically evoking the same emotion from the audience, however they are smaller to grasp people’s attention more easily, as the brochures will be sent out via the post and on handed out in the streets of Perth. -(?8

Natasha McFarlane

My role in this event as a geographer, would be a planning consultant and to consult with various local and state (building) planning agencies in Western Australia, including the City of Perth (local) and the Western Australian Planning Commission (Department of Planning), in order to obtain planning approvals for constructing new special education support centres, which would further support children with learning disabilities in W.A – in particular children living in disadvantaged remote areas. In order to build centres that are easily accessible to all and are effective in helping as many students as possible, I would need to ask the Western Australian Department of Education to conduct a preliminary anonymous education census (via the Australian Bureau of Statistics), which would identify areas of need of support centres. All the funding raised from the event will be used to build the support centres and the progress of the building will be posted on the events website, to inform the public that their donations are definitely helping out a good cause.

As a geographer, I would need to first analyse and research suitable locations for building the support centres in relation to certain factors such as, how close will the support centres be to mass transit facilities (i.e. Bus stations, main roads) /accessibility to the public, environmental/economic impacts on the local area and social diversity and sustainability. Then I would need to research how to apply for planning approvals from the West Australian Planning Commission, approximately how much the approvals and building materials would cost, in relation to how many support centres being built and most importantly how long the approvals will take, or if there is an option to apply for multiple planning approvals at once. I would also need a Development Application Checklist from the West Australian Planning Commission, to ensure a smooth building process. Then I would research if the construction of the support centres would be further assisted by government/organisation grants. For example Lottery west provides grants up to $200,000, for community and workplace buildings for non-profit organisations/events.

   pK/

Because these important centres would be inclusive of children with learning disabilities in W.A., as it would enable them to further benefit from educational support in an encouraging and welcoming learning environment, most suited to their needs. Also the building of special education support centres in remote W.A. communities, will strongly assist the disadvantaged children who live in these isolated communities (i.e. Kalgoorlie), who may not have complete access to full educational support due to geographic distance and location. Every child deserves an equal right to a valuable education and skills, which will help them throughout their life.

I will use my disciplines to write a newspaper article on our topic of education for children with special needs in Western Australia. My newspaper article will aim to point out the complications and barriers that many parents of special needs children face when seeking suitable education. I will also focus on the accessibility of services to these children with needs, zoning in on why there is insufficient availability and how this could be improved. In order to make appropriate use of my Anthropology and Sociology discipline I would like to also speak of any relevant social, political or cultural issues. I would hope to have my piece published in a popular West Australian newspaper, such as 'The Morning Herald' or 'The West Australian', in order to target the intended audience (the WA public) and spread awareness and compassion for this issue. I will also do a small write up of our music festival accompanying my main article which promotes the cause and encourages readers to attend and donate.

Dominique

Hypothetically, I would make ads for TV and short documentary-styled films to raise awareness for our cause. For this project I have created designs for posters which would be distributed around perth to advertise our music festival event. I have also teamed up with Natasha and designed a brochure as an advertisement that gives more in-depth information about our cause.

In my opinion, posters and brochures are great tools of communication and advertisement. As we are targeting a younger audience of young adults at our music festival, I tried to design the poster to give off a fun, vibrant vibe that was exciting and sophisticated. As a media student I was able to demonstrate my design abilities through these advertisements

Jasmine

As my discipline is creative advertising and Graphic Design I have decided to create a website design for our festival. So the reason I’m creating a website is that it will have everything you need to know about the festival, Smiles 4 Days. The website will have a couple of sections for information, this is to give our target market an insight of what we are about and where their money will go. The website will include documentary styled films, Feature articles and brochures to download. The website will also allow our target market to purchase the tickets.

I have also designed the tickets for the festival. When designing the ticket, I wanted the ticket to look fun, to give off an energy feeling as thats what our festival is all about, hence why I used bright colours. I also used the bright colours to attract our target market.

When creating the ticket, I had to do some research on festivals that are targeted at the same audiences as Smiles 4 days to get an idea of what there ticket designs looks like and also looking at images of what goes on in the festivals. This was to help me get an Idea of what similar feelings we wanted to give off to our target market, so I could include these into my designs. Looking at the imagery in the research, I found out that everything I saw had a fun vibe to it, this was done by the use of bright colours mixed together which can give us a sense of energy.

Going along with what Jasmine has spoken about on communicating with our target audience. In my opinion the one of the best ways to advertise is through social media, so hypothetically I would also create a Facebook page and Instagram page called Smiles 4 days just advertise our festival a little more in what we do. The reason why we advertise things on social media is that our target market are all on it. By doing this, our festival will get known better as people will advertise our festival through themselves to others by liking and sharing. This is a good way for advertising as it is free as everything is digital (no printing involved) and the webpages are free to use, so it works out cheaper for us.

Monique

I looked into the current state of disabled support in schools in Perth in the current time. I came across a page that described the amount of funding that the Australian Government had given between the years of 2012 and 2014. The initial funding was for $200 million and then got extended to $300 million by the end of 2014.
This boost in funding allowed the education system to give more training to teachers to aid in the teaching of disabled children. Also it allowed them to create new facilities to also aid in the learning.
This is why I believe 'Smiles 4 Dayz' will be a good way in generating more money to boost this funding even more.

I looked at organising the venue. We decided that Langley park in the city would be a good location to host the event. It has a central location in the centre of Perth and would be easy to get to via public transport. The venue also has wheelchair access which helps with our overall theme of people with disabilities. This encourages them to come along to the event as well. We wanted the event to be fun for everyone and to involve as much of the community as we could.
Langley Park as also held a number of other events and is well known for its festival like atmosphere. This is also another reason we decided it would be a good location.
Another benefit into this location is there is the capacity of having a main stage with the main band or artist to perform as well as some food trucks and other pop up meal/drink places. We thought that this would be a good idea because if the festival runs all day people will need food and drinks. Also it adds to this entire festival atmosphere we will be trying to create.
The event has also been made 18+ so that alcohol will be served throughout the day. Because of this we will have to have security checking ID's on the way in and also walking through the event making sure no one is cause any trouble. Also all the members working on any alcohol stands must have an RSA so they are legally allowed to serve the alcohol.

As my discipline is International Relations. I felt we needed to spread our message to the global community and ask for them to support not only our event but the countless other special need children. To do this I would set up a GoFundMe page and will need help from Luciana and Jasmine. To produce special messages and viral videos for the page. Creating a GoFundMe page is the perfect way to spread awareness on a global scale and enable us to connect too people all over the world, in hope that they are able to learn more about special needs children, and how more money needs to be given to the families and communities to enable special needs children are adequately looked after and supported, and perhaps provide support and funds to enable more special needs children have access to proper education and facilities around the globe.

When I was looking at various charities to get an idea of what I could bring to the group and how other charities are portrayed on the web. I got a sense that a fair amount of charities like the Red Cross or Act for Peace are successful because they are able to spread their cause around the world and gain funding and support from a wide audience. I feel that we need to spread awareness and encourage people around the world to go out and make sure that special needs kids are able to access to resources such as a proper education, Medical help and support for the families of special needs kids. It’s vital for us to spread our event and its important message to everybody around this beautiful world, in the hopes that at least some of them will listen to us.

The GoFundMe page will enable the global community to give more funding and support for special needs kids. This page will provide information about special needs children from websites such as masters-in-special-education.com/special-needs/. Education.vic.gov.au/children/parents/needs and kidshealth.org/en/kids/special-needs. The page will also include Video and text messages from the various artists playing at ‘Smiles 4 Dayz’. To achieve this Luciana will ask all of the acts if they would like to send a message of support for the whole world to see, and if so, than she would ask them to email me their responses. Another idea I had for the page was to set up a stream of the event and link it to the page, which Jasmine would help set up with me. That way the whole world can witness our event. Which will hopefully encourage more people to awareness and money for special needs children.

Over the years, we have crossed many milestones in areas such as providing care for special needs children). This money will be used for helping and assisting special needs children with speech therapy, cognitive and behaviour therapy, counselling sessions, housing these children in special needs homes such as group homes and also to enable them to stay at home with their parent(s) and to provide these parents with ongoing carer’s support both in and out of the home. It would be such an honour to us if you would accept this invitation to be our entertainment for this very special event, I am most certain that you will enjoy the event and at the same time your presence will help us to raise a much broader awareness of finding a cure for not only Autism but also helping to make the public aware of the challenges family’s face on a day to day bases with children with special needs, your commitment and dedication will make this fundraiser into an even greater success.

I thank you in advance for considering supporting this worthy cause by accepting our special invitation.
Summer can be a challenging time for children with special needs and their parents. Many families face a decrease in school and therapeutic hours. This may leave parents with extra time to fill during the day. Parents are also on alert as children with behavioral or social skill challenges encounter bullies and controlling peers at parks. A trip to a recreational center may seem like an easy answer for some families, but not always the most accommodating for a child with physical disabilities or special needs. As a result, AbilityPath.org created a list of ten summer activities to do with your child that don’t require weeks of planning, a small loan or traveling further than your backyard. - See more at: http://www.abilitypath.org/health-daily-care/daily-care/playing/top-ten-summer-activities-special-needs.html#sthash.ha8ZtpGU.dpuf

In my news report, I will cover the following points in relation to complications parents and children face. These points include: the shortage of available information about possible options, courses of action, or support for families; disorganised collaboration between special needs services, sectors and support staff as well as little cooperation between education, community and health services; lack of funding for special needs student support; no funding for “mild intellectual disability, behavioural problems and learning difficulties” and inadequate technological support or equipment such as visual aids, wheelchair access, walking frames etc, as well as access to buildings. (Australian Human Rights Commission.)

These issues could be partly resolved through raising more awareness of the situation through media platforms, such as newspapers, because it is not something a lot of people are informed about. Through this community project, the music festival, we aim to fundraise and donate to fund services and support these special needs students.

Dominique

As a kid i was diagnosed with ADHD, so i know firsthand how hard it is for both the child and families . This is why i feel its my job to spread the stories of special needs families through the website and the gofundmepage. I will also step up on stage and in front of the patrons and all of the people witnessing the event via the internet. Hopefully by sharing these stories with the world, i'll help raise more funding to the event and provide people the will power to stand up for special needs children and even adults all over the country, and make sure that there countries government is providing adequate funding and support for special needs individuals and their families.
