I think this is an important issue to address. We are all guilty of copying/downloading an image to share or use in someway. One part of our coding program has students finding a map online and uploading it to the backdrop of their project. It doesn't take much time to teach how to find images responsibly.

Teacher education on this topic is important as well.

One way to get students thinking is to have them explore the careers they are interested in. Students research those careers, decide what the career does on a daily basis, and then have partner/class discussions about the level of CS or computing involved with the career. - Felicia Woodard

As a former special ed teacher, I spent a lot of time working with my students on Chromebook accessibility features. We used the built-in features and Google Read & Write. In addition to learning how to use the features based on student accommodations, my students also brainstormed ways to improve these accessibility features and determined the usuability based on their own and their classmates' needs. Provide students with the option of handwriting essays, or typing essays. Conference with students individually to discuss the reasons for their choice and how their choice has made completing the assignment easier. It can be easy for us to tell students that it needs to be done one way or the other. However, I think it is important to provide choice for students as well as help them to understand why the choice they are making is the best one for them.

2nd grade is where I start allowing students to fully browse the library. One of the things I go over with them is IF/THEN statements, and I incorporate those into our book circulation routines:

IF I like the book that I'm looking at, THEN I can take it to the desk to borrow it.
IF I don't like the book, THEN I should put it on the return cart.

Accessibility and Equity - Immersive Reader and Read Aloud

Immersive Reader is an accessibility tool that is currently available in Microsoft Edge, most Microsoft applications including Word, OneNote, and Forms to name a few. Schoology just added Immersive Reader to their platform. It can be found in Flipgrid and many other educational web tools as well.
Immersive Reader allows students to choose voice for text read as well as the speed of the speech. There are text preferences that include size of font, spacing, column style, and page colors for contrast to meet individual reading preferences. There is also grammar tools to show syllables, and the ability to highlight parts of speech. Lastly, there are reading preferences such as line focus, picture dictionary, and a translator.
Another common tool in many web based tools and sites is Read Aloud that is a simpler tool that will read the text. This tool allows speed and voice adjustments.
Making sure students know about the tools available to them and how to use them increases equity and accessibility.

AS we begin to understand computers and writing code in third grade, I start with Brainpopjr videos on computational thinking and then Understanding Coding. From there, we go to coding.com where students write code in order to build a video game. Coding.org starts simple and then progresses as students get better at coding.

Digital Divide

As a former computer science teacher, I've found that impacts of computing was an overarching category that students could frequently relate to, although not necessarily in the same way. Most if not all of them were familiar with the Industrial Revolution, but weren't able to separate it out into four phases. Because they were born into an age where tech is ubiquitous in society, they aren't yet really aware of the drastic advancements that have happened over the last couple of decades or so.

I do like the fact that the standards address accessibility - this is one aspect of the digital divide that is closing more rapidly than others, I think. Students should be able to grasp the concept that different users need different accessibility options, and that including those options within devices or software does help lessen the divide. However, especially in light of the pandemic, it's so important for us to recognize that there are people within our own communities who may not be able to afford internet access, or have limited access based on their location. And that accessibility may not be related to a disability or geographical/monetary access, but also age or gender.

I believe educators should start integrating the topic of AI into their classrooms. The teachers can incorporate AI's central concepts, like learning about data science and ethical design, into any school. This year I participated in the National Day of AI which falls on May 13th. This has a wealth of resources that a teacher with little experience or knowledge with AI can integrate easily into a classroom lesson. My goal one day is make this a school wide event like the hour of code that occurs in December.

Career Paths

In teaching a course, I try to introduce students to various career paths associated with the course. With technology becoming essential in so many professions, I emphasize STEM skills (including digital fluency) and their importance for students achieving goals in career paths of interest.

I agree with the "Careers with CS" post that it would be a fruitful exercise for students to research the computing components of their professions of interest.

I worked with special education students in first grade last year, and one of the things I found was that some students had a hard time remembering the steps to sign in if there were a lot of them, or what to do if they encountered roadblocks. I would have appreciated the opportunity to teach these students how to use, and eventually create, QR codes so that they could go right to the website they were trying to access.

Edpuzzles using these videos are especially helpful as it can better focus students and assess them with questions throughout the video.

Digital Literacy is very important in today's society starting from a very young age. Students need to learn how to keyboard and learning through games is fun and engaging. Students are also able to read stories and articles that not only appeal to them, but that are also on their appropriate lexile level. These are amazing resources! I wish I had some of them for the past several years. One thing we need to think about is that although the students have access in school, they may not have access at home. Making sure we are not sending home work that cannot be completed is very important.

I think the biggest thing for elementary school is showing the students what is accessible to them. I think it's important to let the students know what they can use, HOW they can use it and also the features that can HELP and guide them when doing so. Many of my students have trouble with the minor things on a computer so I think that is a really big thing for me is making sure they know what is available and how to use it.

For example, if a student needs help with math homework, a website such as Khan Academy provides sample problems and tutorials that can be helpful. YouTube also has many educational channels and videos that help bring learning to life.

Students can research the property rights of digital music and laws that changed the music industry. This would be a relevant lesson for today's youth as they make and create their own videos, they need to be aware of the laws of fair use and public domain. "When it comes to using music on Youtube, If you didn't create it, then you can't use it." This doesn't just apply to music, it also applies to images, games, clips of movies and tv shows. etc. This rule also applies to the web at large!

Having just recently graduate with a dual masters in special education and childhood education 1-6, last year was my first year as a gen ed 5th grade teacher, I made sure my students had choice and accessibility. Using the chrome book to build on skills they will rely on when they enter the workforce is truly invaluable. Offering paper and pen when needed, but for those who freeze when a blank piece of paper is handed to them, giving them the option to use "read and write" extension, or "kami" to read, write and highlight gave power to those students who felt powerless before.

Digital citizenship is something we focus on in school, we have a specific unit that hones in on these strategies and skills. It is a very important standard that can not be missed. These behaviors translate to everyday social interactions as well. Making that real life connection is very important. You can not hide from something you posted online. Once it is out there, it stays forever. That concept is foreign to little people.

Working with kindergarten students, it amazes me how much they are already able to do on their chrome books. I have students that make phones out of construction paper and pretend to talk on it like their parents. They even draw apps on the "home screen" like an IPhone. I believe guiding the students and showing them what is available is important, however, I also feel giving them free time to explore their device is equally as important.

Little kids come into school knowing how to use devices for entertainment, such as watching videos, playing games, and FaceTiming friends and family . One of our jobs is to teach them how to use technology as a tool for learning and communicating. With my students this summer, we began to explore using word prediction when writing an email, how to make the font larger and smaller, how to use speech to text and the Read Aloud tool on Microsoft Word.

In my classroom, we discuss the use of accessibility features to support our learning. I've taught students how to use Speak Aloud on Apple Products. I've also shown them how to use Immersive Reader to have text read, add highlighting by word, phrase, or sentence, and identify the different parts of speech in the words in a text.

I think that generative AI is able to open so many doors for students. Even though the quiz show with the books and the computers showed that there are inequities within technology access, AI can still be amazing in meeting students where they are. Almost every child now has their own personal device that has been provided by the district, so accessibility has improved greatly. Tools such as Khan Academy are able to meet students where they are and provide them with personalized learning paths/tutoring that will make content more accessible to them. I think that teaching students explicitly how to use these tools to their advantage will be empowering. This can also be linked to a conversation about how AI can be used to our advantage and how we use it responsibly.
