Blind Spot: Generalizing other college students as poor influences

When my siblings went to college, all I heard them talk about was partying and then complaining about not getting the careers they wanted. I am 3/3 for siblings ending up in jobs that they did not want. I was worried that is all that college students worried about. Staying up until 5 am going to the bars just to be late for the 10 am class. My first week of sophmore year I moved down to East Lansing and was met with that same experience. It was my birthday on the first home game of the year. I had a group of my brothers friends that wanted to take me out and that was when it started. I avoided as much as a could until I realized everything is fine in moderation.

Cause: What did I do to get here?

I have constantly worked to avoid having the free time to hangout with peers. I have held a full time job though out college and have reflected a couple times this semester to realize I feel that I have skipped most of this chapter in my life.

I have realized that while I have been "Connecting" with people in the business world. I have almost missed the best opportunity to network with people in my same shoes.

Normally a lot of people ask me for advice when looking for internships or other professional needs. I came across a TED talk recently on how students should be networking and it has changed my entire thought process.

1.) Ask more questions! BE CURIOUS

2.)Understand that everyone is more different then you think. You never know what something has done until you ask!

3.)Be open to any new experiences if it makes sense. Take the time now while you have free time and little obligations to experience new things.

4.)Use the resources available to you before they are gone!

Networking in college

One of the best oppertunities in college is meeting others starting in your career. You might hate you job but, you could find have a great reference at another company if you networked with someone in college.

Life Skills

Majority of this information is things that you learn from interacting with others. I think that communication skills is a huge issue for people that do not make friends in college because it suffocates you from working in a team environment.

When you spend so much time working you get to know a couple of people that might be in the same boat. I think a lot of this time I can spent meeting with other friends that have the same values and help them understand my findings.

A lot of the time I did not see myself having much in common with my peers. Majority of the time was spent try to figure out how I could get the next leg up.

Audience: Future College Students

I think the audience would be future college students because I would not want them making the same mistakes as me. Learn from these issues and make the most of what you have.

Look in the hidden spots

Michael Lewis talks about the struggle to find experts and how americans are more sceptic today then ever. I think this is great advice because even though people have the right credidation does not mean that they are always the best for the job. They talk about how there was a doctor in Califonia that could have done a better job dealing with the pandemic then the world leaders. Now this is two forms of generalization but it shows that not everyone is always as informed as they say they are!
