Current Event Brainstorming Padlet & Questions by David Said

Post a "topic" related to current events you would be interested in learning more about "AND/OR" a thought out question pertaining to it. The idea is to create a "collage" of new ideas we can connect to the course content throughout the 2020-21 school year. Example: Do not just say "immigration". Be more detailed, talk about a group or an aspect of it. Hence, this will ensure that students posting about the same topic will have slightly different variations. Don't forget to put your first and last name as part of your post. Based on your postings, we will incorporate a topic into a class discussion the first week of school (either in person, or on Big Blue Button, or combination of the two)

The "immunities" of federal government officials and their network of connections: For example, President Donald Trump was accused of rape on several occasions, yet he suffered no consequences. Same case for Bill Clinton. I think if they weren't so powerful, they would have been charged for their misconduct. The right to a fair trial was not really considered, which seems to undermine the purpose of the Constitution.

This pandemic is certainly altering the routinely-based common lives of the everyday American citizen and their immediate family members.

Along with the continuous discrimination of minorities throughout the system in America and abuse of power, Muslim minorities in China are being forced into concentration camps and stripped away of their basic human rights for simply being Muslim. Uighur Muslims are being held in these camps unwillingly, and are physically abused and forced to renounce their religion. The question that arises from this crisis is what can the U.S government do to solve this? Is the reason they are not taking actions is due to their influential economic ties with the Chinese economy?

Many across the US aren't taking the virus seriously, even after we were doing better for a bit of time. In other countries they have ran trials and are somewhat close to finding something that could help. On the other hand, America doesn't seem like its doing anything about the virus. Our president as well isn't taking this problem seriously. The question from this is, if not taken seriously, what could this virus do to us people in the long run? will we have to wear our protective gear for the next couple of years?

The movement started when an innocent African-American man was killed due to police brutality. Protests sparked around the world, demanding for African-Americans to be treated equally.
A current event topic that I would like to discuss during the upcoming school year are the Black Lives Matter protests and riots. I'd like to discuss this because no attention was brought upon this topic until someone was killed due to the aggressiveness of the police. This topic should've been discussed a long time ago because this is an act of racism and racial injustice in general is under the law. If police brutality was discussed before the death of many African Americans then those deaths wouldn't of happened in the first place. With all these riots and protests, the people have the right and say of their kind because nothing can make up for the death of an innocent man.

With the massive outbreak of the coronavirus, the American people are finding an increase in unemployment this means less/no income and spending money. However, they still are receiving benefits from the government to help cope with that problem such as worker’s compensation and stimulus checks. How are these systems working to keep the economy running? Are the government’s efforts achieving success or failure? If the US were to possibly have another increase in cases how would our economy react?

A current day issue that is worth discussion is the idea of freedom of speech. Recently I've seen many controversial figures post their controversial opinions on a regulated social forum, and quickly their ideas are shut down, either by a dissenting mob, or the platform admins for "inciting violence." For some reason people are making a distinction between hate speech and free speech, as if a regulation on hate wouldn't affect freedom. My question is, to what extent should we regulate speech? Not in the government, those rules are already set in stone, but instead on social media, which can be hailed as the new "town square". Who should regulate it, if we should decide it needed such action? How tolerant should we be of others opinions? Who determines that? And most importantly, do we even want our communities to be "free"?

A current event topic that I would want to discuss is how the federal governmnet, more specifically the executive branch, has utilized their position of power during the ensuing riots and protests in wake of the death of George Floyd. This ongoing event has clearly shown the public the true power the federal government has at its disposal. The most evident use of this power can be seen in the deployment of federal officers to Portland Oregon in an effort to control riots. Federal agents from the U.S. Marshals Service and the BORTAC unit of the Customs and Border Protection Agency were deployed to Portland wearing camouflage uniform driving unmarked vehicles. According to eye witness reports these agents would pick up protesters in these unmarked vehicles with no explanation or given reason of why they were being detained. According to the president these officers were deployed to quell the riots and "anarchy" in Portland. Whatever the reason may be, how far does the power of the federal law enforcement have on the people? When Americans are detained on site with no explanation, transported in unmarked vehicles, and detained with no prior information, is the federal government in the right constitutionally?

A current event in the world today that I want to discuss is COVID-19. This has had a major impact on the world's economy and its population. Millions of fatalities have been caused by the spread of this virus. This leads me to wonder how it started out. Yes it began in china, but what is the pinpoint of its "birth"? I am interested in this because a handful of people that I know personally have had it and I've seen firsthand how fast this virus has spread. Another thing that interests me about this virus is my curiosity on whether it is linked to the plague, ebola, swine flu, etc. There is a pattern with these diseases in history, and maybe it is just a coincidence but I wonder if they are linked somehow.

While that's very helpful for the workers that are out of work, does that hurt the value of the dollar bill? In other words, where is the money coming from? Are they simply printing off more money? Because that's inflation. Im just very curious as to where and how they're getting this money to send out to millions of families.

A current topic I am interested in discovering is the current state of Lebanon since the explosion in their port a few days back. Before the explosion, the corruption and negligence of the Lebanese government led to massive food and fuel shortages. Now considering their port was the base for imports, and their economic state is in shambles due to the coronavirus pandemic, how will Lebanese people receive the basic necessities to survive? How will this further add to their crumbling economic state? In terms of governmental aid, how will the national Gendarmerie defend the government considering their unenviable position due to the collapse of the economy? How will the suffering of the Lebanese people affect their current ruling oligarchy? Will this be the uttermost, last call for a reformation of their ruling power?

A current topic I am interested in is the concentration camps being held in china for Muslims. The Chinese are holding Muslims captive and forcing them to break their religious rituals. They are forced to eat pork, drink beer, and they're even making them marry Chinese men to stop the spread of Muslims. Little to nobody is talking about this and this is a big problem. I would like to know more about this topic and understand more about it to spread awareness. This has been happening for years and its now coming to peoples mind. I would like to know how to stop it and what caused these camps to begin.

Ever since March, COVID-19 levels have been skyrocketing to more and more cases everyday, so the school board and government ordered all schools to close and have students learn from home. This was obviously a very appropriate thing to do, though it could have happened much earlier to lower the number of cases in the U.S. earlier. But in Michigan the mandatory quarantine where citizens must stay inside and only go to stores IF they must, ended at the end of May/ beginning of June. That being said, how is it any safer to go outside of our homes when the numbers of COVID-19 cases have barely changed or gotten better? Also why are some schools deciding to still open in the fall with the pandemic still very apparent? Most importantly what does this say about our society in America as a whole?

The country is currently facing Covid, an economic and a humanitarian crisis. The recent explosion, located right on the port, added to this economic and humanitarian crisis by demolishing businesses and homes. Hundreds of families are currently looking for places to sleep and obtain food, with no help from their government. I am interested in seeing how the citizens are going to regain the countries economic strength. Also, Lebanon is also has been dealing with sectarianism so I am interested in seeing how the country will try and work past the differences in opinions and rebuild itself.

For example, a couple weeks ago there was an explosion in Lebanon where hundreds were killed, thousands were injured, and hundreds of thousands were left homeless and with broken houses. Not to mention, with its only 6.5 million population, Lebanon is now seeing 600+ new COVID cases a day (to put that in proportion, Michigan is seeing about 200-400 cases a day and has 10 million citizens). Not to mention, there is currently no government in Lebanon. As such a large country, what is the US doing to help Lebanon? What is the US doing to help the starving children in Yemen?

An interesting topic that happened these couple months is COVID-19. due to this disease every school was on lock down and we resumed school online. but the problem was that many people did not have access to WiFi, computers, etc. Plus online school isn't efficient as in school school studies. One in 5 teens cannot complete schoolwork at home because they do not have a computer or internet connection. The goal for students and adults is to stay at least 6 feet apart to help prevent the spread of the virus. However, research has found that spacing desks at least 3 feet apart and avoiding close contact may have similar benefits--especially if students wear masks and do not have symptoms of illness. thousands and millions of people are dying because of this disease so we should be aware of this.

A current topic I think we should discuss is the 2020 presidential election this November, and the angles both parties are taking to win voters. This is because America has had a multitude of challenges to overcome these past 4 years (especially this one) and it would be a good idea to see how both Trump and Biden plan to address and control these problems. The future of America is uncertain due to the current state of the world, and with a possible complete shift in American government, it’s very important we lead ourselves in the right direction. This is also important because both political parties are being more and more split apart, with the Republican “America First” policy proving futile to other global governments international growth, and the Democrats growing a more and more federal government reliance among the lower class.

A topic I am interested is discussing is the 2020 presidential election and how both candidates, if elected, will handle the country following the pandemic. Normally the first few months of a presidency can be relatively quiet, but since the first few months of this presidency will be either during or immediately after a pandemic then the president may have to pass laws and make official statements dealing with the virus during their first few months in office. How the candidate would handle the virus would likely be an important topic in the debates and something voters think about before voting as it is probably the most important issue today. The candidate's policies dealing with the virus might be the deciding factor for swing states like Florida that have a high number of cases. Ultimately, the virus will be a very important issue for whoever wins the presidency to take care of and however they do handle it will most likely affect their approval rating greatly.

A topic that I am interested in discussing is the presidential election coming up in November.
As a new or current president is elected every 4 years there are changes and challenges to the presidential campaign that can interest others or push them away from voting for that certain president. One of the main topics that could be talked upon during these campaigns is Covid-19, the virus that swept every one off their feet that still has yet to be cured. Presidential election have many topics that are talked about but are never put into place when that president is actually elected. As the Republican parties Donald Trump and Mike Pence are fighting to go another 4 years, the Democratic parties Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are trying to put an end to Trump and Pence's time in office. Voters are the main weapon to presidential opponents and with polls, rallies, and debates these are all effects on how the people perceive you during your time on stage so making good statements and promising laws and policies are all ways to gain interest and votes.

I would want to learn specifically about how the pandemic effects candidates running campaign, the working class economy, and exactly who gains or looses from the spread of COVID-19.

This has been described to be the largest mass imprisonment since the Holocaust. Unwillingly, the Uighur Muslims are being physically mistreated and are forced to go against their beliefs and religion. They are forced to eat pork and drink alcohol, and women have to marry non-muslim men to further reduce the population of muslims. Children between the ages of 6 months and 12 years old are being locked up like animals and brainwashed into turning their backs on their religion and even their parents. The world has brought very little light to the inhumane events happening in China. How and why did these camps first begin? What can the U.S. do to stop these camps?

It has become a major conflict in all communities as protests and riots came into action worldwide. The black lives matter movement advocates for non-violent acts of resistance against police brutality and inequality. For example, current events of police brutality have impacted the viewpoints of our public on discrimination and racism such as the deaths of Breonna Taylor and George Flloyd. This has been going on for years and current generations have been able to speak on such matters of inequality and influence those around them regarding the injustices towards minorities. This issue of racial injustice is unconstitutional and counteracts the purpose of the Civil Rights Act that our ancestors fought so hard to achieve. How long must racism occur until change is finally implemented? How would the world appear today is we had executed a change earlier?

Climate change is a global issue occurring constantly and nothing is necessarily being said about it. At the rate we're heading, climate change is on it's way to becoming irreversible and we will leave our future generations hopeless and stuck in a. hole they can't get out of. Politicians haven't taken much action in regards to this crisis, for the world is surrounded with too many obstacles that need to be tackle. However, my views show that Climate change needs to be handled with accordingly now along with Covid-19, both of which are detrimental to humans and the world. How long will it take for people to finally notice the affects of climate change? When will someone step-in? In my personal opinion we are still able to act appropriately and still succeed economically because dealing with this won't be easy (financially as well). I'm specifically interested in how the US government will interact with leaders of the world in the future to take action and make a plan to reduce the growth of climate change.

Also another topic of how big organizations refusing to play will affect people and the government or will it just hurt them in the long run and cause them to lose money from not showcasing games.

A current topic I'm interested in is the handling of corona by the government in contrast to the media. For AP Language Arts I read an article about a recent statement from Trump where he stated that scientists have made a major breakthrough in finding a cure for covid. Trump's statement was based on a very incomplete study from a clinic, more so an observation. The clinic found that using plasma treatment was safe and they could use it to prolong the life of the patient while the body naturally repels the disease, however there wasn't nearly enough evidence to make any conclusions. Despite this Trump irresponsibly announced that a cure may be coming despite most, if not all, experts saying that the study was extremely incomplete. This incident had me interested in the governments way of handling things and their desire to maintain peace over clarity.

This conflict, mainly over territory, resulted in many innocent Palestinians being driven away from their homes and killed by the Israeli's. The United States government has yet to do anything to negotiate peace between the two, or try to aid the families that were torn apart by these conflicts. In fact, the United States has supported Israel with money to aid their military and government. There are clear objections over Israel's actions and many other countries acknowledge that and do not support it. The United States has violated international and moral concerns by aiding Israel's forces in areas of occupation. Why don't more people acknowledge this major issue that has killed millions of people? Why does the U.S. government still support Israel when their invading Palestinians' homes? When will this problem be solved?

People who have been arrested for rioting and looting have all been bailed out by rich people. Where is the government in this situation? Why are millions of people gathering while we are in a global pandemic, isn't this movement spreading covid-19? Though the Black Lives Matter protests are affecting society, the fact that someone can rob a store clean and get away with it while spreading a global pandemic shocks me.
DISCLAIMER: I support Black Lives Matter
I only want to know what government is doing in response to the riots and the heavy spread of covid-19.

A modern event topic I am interested in is how the British crown manages its empire. The still rules over many parts of the Earth including the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Bahamas, Jamaica, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and many more. This makes the crown one of the biggest entities in the world in terms of land area and economy. I find it very interesting that the crown is able to rule over so many places and peoples from all over the world. I would also like to further understand how the crown maintains the illusion of independence while still controlling its empire. From what I currently understand they achieve this by changing what the public view of the empire is. They position the UK as the empire while in actuality the crown is the empire and it is based in the UK, like with Italy and the Roman empire. To give the illusion of independence they say that a nation or territory is independent of the UK but it is stilled ruled by the crown but not through the UK. They did this with just about every part of the empire. The crown only lets go of a territory completely if they absolutely have to, like with Hong Kong and India. I think it is worth mentioning that yes, the crown is an empire. Webster defines and empire as "a major political unit having a territory of great extent or a number of territories or peoples under a single sovereign authority

especially : one having an emperor as chief of state." They just don't call themselves and empire. The sun never set on the British empire.

The topic that I am interested in is what exactly is going to happen with the Breonna Taylor case. The trial ended with the verdict that no cop who took part in the shooting would get any jail time and the only thing they would get charged for would be wanton endangerment (endangering the neighbors). This caused public outrage, with many people demanding a retrial . I am curious as to whether this retrial will actually happen or if they will just let this case slide.

A topic I'm interested in is the Black Lives Matter movement. The BLM movement is a worldwide human rights movement that originate to the African Americans movement. The killers of Breonna Taylor haven't been charged yet the killers of George Floyd did? I am curious about if the BLM community will let go of what happened with this tragedy or keep pushing for justice ?

A current event that I am Interested in talking about are the concentration camps made in China that are forcing Muslims to stop following their religion and perform acts not allowed by their religion. I would like to understand why other countries/governments have not stepped in and tried to stop this oppression. No news outlets seem to be speaking about this matter and no light has been shed on it. Some world leader went as far as to agreeing to what China has been doing to Muslims and the media still hasn’t spoke about
