If it was a 10 year old it would have been different. Her parents are correct about teens dying in car crashes every year yet we still let them drive. At 16 they are an "adult" and they are allowed to be responsible for themselves. In the text it mentions the planning of the journey and how if the circumstances were different her journey may have been different.
