Small Contributions Build a Stronger Community

Admiral McRaven emphasized that small actions can make a big difference. I believe this also applies to building a respectful community. Something as simple as picking up trash that isn’t yours, holding the door open, or greeting someone kindly may feel small in the moment, but it sets a tone of respect. These small acts ripple outward, encouraging others to do the same. Over time, they create a culture where people feel valued and respected. Communities don’t become strong overnight — they grow stronger when individuals consistently choose respect in everyday actions.

Admiral McRaven encourages the class of 2014 to change the world. I believe part of changing the world is learning when to put your foot down, and say no. Putting yourself before others builds a strong foundation to be able to help others. Without having the willpower to respect yourself, how will you trust others to do the same? For a while I struggled saying no to people due to my oversensitivity to people. I worried what people may say if I told them how I truly felt. Over the years, and guidance through people, I learned to trust myself. Once you’ve mastered this ability, it sets off a chain reaction. It shows the outside world the empowerment you can feel once you put faith into yourself, and causes others to follow suite. You can start respecting yourself by showcasing your boundaries. Small steps are still steps; all you have to do is start the momentum.

Giving others ideas the validation they deserve

In Admiral McRaven’s speech, we see him give us multiple examples of definitions of respect. One specific lesson we heard him convey was staying respectful to your peers. This corresponds to our high school experience with other people. Everybody is developing new viewpoints, ideas, and opinions about how they see the world we live in. An example we are able to see, could be as little as someone coming up with a different answer to a question than you. Although you might not agree with the person, you don’t force your own viewpoint down their throat, you learn to respect their idea and perspective. Know that everybody is different and still developing, ideas can change over time, and so can people, but it’s important to show care and understanding to their present stances, just as you’d want them to do for you. I believe building an environment that is consistently respectful of others' perspectives is crucial in making high school a more healthy and stable environment, just like McRaven made his workforce.

Admiral McRaven’s lesson five, tells us about how respecting ourselves and others teaches us lessons we wouldn’t have caught before if there was no respect for who was teaching us. The sugar cookie drill is a good example, this drill starts when the commanding officer inspects the uniforms every morning to catch sight of flaws. The uniforms are never considered perfect so the seals have to roll around in the sand and stay in it all day. If they didn’t respect their commanding officer they would have to do twice as much work and they would never learn the serious lesson that sometimes no matter how much time and work you put into something it might not be satisfactory and that’s alright. These SEAL life lessons that McRaven taught to us showcase that failure sometimes is inevitable and that’s okay as long as you don’t give up.

Admiral McRaven emphasized how important showing respect to one another is. I also believe that showing respect to others is extremely important. However you should not expect others to automatically treat you with respect if you have not done the same. Nobody wants to be treated with disrespect, so by showing respect to others you will also be treated with respect. Almost everyone was taught to treat others how you would like to be treated. I believe this is extremely important in emphasizing good will towards other people.

Making your bed everyday before you leave can impact your life because you can be having the worst day in your life and once you get home at least your bed is made. Admiral McRaven explains to respect everybody no matter where they come from or their background he sets a tone of respect for other people and also explains to never give up because once you give up it’s over there’s no coming back. Every dream is possible unless you give up. Everybody is different and has different mindsets and respecting everybody makes a big difference in your life.

I can relate to my senior hours by doing LEAP which is also known as the after school program. This shows my respect and gratitude to kids by teaching them and inspiring them to do their homework. This shows my responsibility to get others work done on time and impact their education. McRaven impacted many lives which im trying to do while I complete my hours.

I believe if we surround our self with good people it can help us succeed and for them to succeed. The depending on the people you hang out with can choose a right or wrong path for you. You will need a group of people to help you along the way and succeed without others will make it harder. Respect can help strengthen your friendship with others and this can help you have a stronger connection. This is why friendship goes a long away in your life.

Admiral McRaven really expressed his needs to try and make an impact on people’s lives and how he wants them to not give up on themselves for their people. Him sharing his story by bringing light to it and making a lesson for others to learn and get something out of, goes to prove him having a positive mindset on rough situations goes a long way for the ones hearing. For the people listening it just shows them and encourages them to not be so fixated on the negative and to have the respect to not be always thinking bad and talking down on ourselves. McRaven shows us respect by seeing the value in these new graduates lives and choosing to be a helping hand and a mentor by giving them hope in themselves and circumstances. For example if you’re having a bad day you never know what someone else is going through and maybe a smile could go a long way. Never let your situation impact others negatively when you can help someone else with being positive. Showing that even when your in the dark if you look hard enough you can always find the light.

Admiral McRaven explains that respect for society encourages service, sacrifice, responsibility to something greater than ourselves. Which means even if we are dealing with problems in our life, showing respect to others builds dignity, self character, a Community of individuals who encourage one and other to be something greater together. For example giving back to the need showing that they’re human too and that we have not forgotten about them. Instead of empathizing our troubles, We should secure the ones who have actual problems the people who don’t even have food for themselves, instead of worrying for yourself worry about our community as if one person makes difference the rest will see and follow. Overall showing respect in our hardships can make a difference to the community.

Admiral McRaven demonstrates some great examples of how respect can affect and change the world for the better. I believe that having respect for others can spread some positivity throughout the community. A simple “thank you” can even make a difference. As something simple as listening and acknowledging when a classmate of yours is speaking or presenting can make a difference. Show that you care to listen to them when they share their answers or their opinion. Work as a team with your fellow classmates, if you have a different viewpoint than them, respect their opinions. Be polite to teachers, greet them when you enter class, pay attention to what they are teaching to the class and put in the effort to do the work given to you. Throw away your lunch into their respective trash bins, showing respect to the school campus and the school staff. There will be many people of different lifestyles, social status, gender, ethnicities, sexuality present in your time in school, treat all of them the same and demonstrating these acts of respect will surely make an impact and make you be treated with the same amount of respect back.

In the city we live in it is a small community an event or action by one person to another however small can lighten up someone and change the course of their day or life in general. If someone makes the slightest impact in your day try to pass it on to others, even if it was a frustrating try to make your day better by being kind to others, having respect to others even if you didn't receive it can make its own strand of kindness. One little event can stick to someone for the longest, if one person makes a positive or negative comment to one it may or may not stick to them causing them to start creating another ripple to the bowl.

Change the course of their lives in an unexpected positive way.

In Admiral McRaven’s speech he highlights the fact of having self-respect, he gives many examples of how you should never give up no matter what. Which essentially ties into never settling for less and being patient because the right time will come. Whether that’s your dreams, your career, or even a relationship, you should never settle for less. It’s really easy to get complacent in life and not strive for more, fearing that can lead to failing, so you just stay in your comfort zone thinking it’s a “safe” place to be in. Although it seems safe, it keeps us from going beyond our full potential and reaching our dreams. This also ties into having self-respect, without that self-respect you’ll let people take advantage of you and ultimately make you settle for what’s less for you. Be patient and keep looking for the best opportunity for you, again whether that is your dream, your career, your relationships. Never ever settle for less.

If we didn’t we would have to do it again until everyone on the team finished in time. On the last lap we were all together struggling to finish together. We noticed someone was behind and struggling to catch up. We all knew if he didn’t catch up we wouldn’t have finished it and would have to do it again. So we all encouraged him and told him to keep going and run faster. With everyone on the team telling him and encouraging to speed up he pushed through it and we all ended up finishing in time. This shows how team and everyone on the team getting involved can help the whole team together and those that are struggling the most.

I have learned in life to not do anything less than what you can. Last year I ended with a 4.5 GPA and all A's during my second semester of junior year, while having wrestling practice, and games, because I pushed myself. I learned that everything I put hard work into pays off as long as I am disciplined. My life lesson also shows respect to myself for valuing my education and future! It also shows respect to my teachers and coaches because I engaged in their teachings and put effort into it. By applying myself academically and athletically, I also respect my family and community by being a responsible person because I took advantage of my opportunities. Lastly, when you put forth your best effort not only may you be satisfied with the outcome, but you will become stronger and better prepared for whatever's next.

It is also important to practice self respect and know when your not respected it is better to leave or end the friendship. Hopefully acts of respect and self respect encourage other to do the same. This could possibly lead to a ripple effect of change in our Sanger High community.

In the work force, it’s easy to take the “lazy” way. We may decide to cut ourselves some slack and rest more than needed, when we do these things we get ourselves into the “poor me” mindset. So are we truly respecting ourselves and our responsibility to our jobs? No not all, in the example of firefighting, Our first responders work tirelessly throughout the day and night to help others in need. So imagine if they were to skip out on their workout days to rest from staying up the night prior. Over time they’d become weaker and weaker. This results in a slower reaction time and the inability to perform their best in times of need. But do they do this? No. Our first responders have never stopped to be good, they strive to be great, the minimum is simply not enough so you must practice for the maximum. Respect for yourself leaves respect for others and your job.

Respect: More Than Just a Word

Respect. What does it mean? How do we show it? Those were questions I had never asked myself. I never understood the broader picture of what respect meant. Going back a couple to a few years ago I wasn’t exactly who I am today nor someone I should’ve been. There was a time where I was an angry and hateful person, someone who’d act out of spite. I was the type of person who’d victimize myself because I was mistreated, saying how it’s not fair that I was a treated the way I was and the person who was treating me bad was able to just go on with life. It came to a point to where I’d take out my own personal frustration on others, mistreating them by being rude or other mean things which all fall under the category of Disrespect. But one day, through my anger and hate, a man came to me and spoke to me about how I’ve been acting. He didn’t belittle me, he didn’t persecute me for what I’ve done, but showed me compassion. He didn’t judge me for my imperfections, but seen me for what was in my heart. He seen how hurt I’ve been and showed me humility and an exceeding decency of human kindness. With Compassion and Grace, he corrected me on what I was doing was wrong. Showing me what respect really was. Before the begging question of what respect was or how to show respect, for me it was just a word. But that man on that day showed me Respect was More Than Just a Word. Respect is to treat others with compassion, humility, grace, kindness, understanding, and exceeding decency of human kindness. As Admiral McRaven once said in his 2014 commencement speech, “If you want to change the world, measure someone by the size of their heart, not the size of their flippers”. To me that quote sits with me as a reminder as to how that man didn’t judge me on the size of my actions, but as to where my heart was at. My lesson to you, is to always show respect by treating others with the characteristics compassion, humility, grace, kindness, understanding, and exceeding decency of human kindness. As that man who came to me knew his words would change my life, you could also change someone else’s life by showing them that Respect Is More Than Just a Word.

Not judging a book by its cover is a good example of demonstrating respect to others. This also makes you a respectable person because you are able to see people for who they are and their character. If people live by this lesson, the world would probably be a better place. Overtime, we hopefully see a different type of generation.

No matter how early you wake up and do it over and over again to some people it will never be perfect. Throughout my life I have learned that perfecting everything you do is simply not possible. If you try your hardest on something and feel like you are not perfect you need to focus on your progression. Progressing on something day after day is important because the saying “A little goes a long way” is extremely accurate.

Everyone deserves respect from the start as soon as you meet someone you should show them respect. Every person deserves to be treated with kindness, fairness, and understanding, regardless of their background or beliefs. When respect is given freely, it gives trust, cooperation, and a sense of belonging in communities. Without respect, conflicts and divisions come, making it difficult for societies to thrive. Recognizing respect as a basic right helps ensure that everyone’s voice is heard and valued. Ultimately, respect nurtures empathy and strengthens the bonds that connect us as human beings.

Treating others the way you want to be treated is a simple but powerful rule that encourages kindness. When you put yourself in someone else’s shoes, it helps you understand their feelings and needs better. This golden rule creates a foundation of trust and respect in relationships, whether with friends, family, or strangers. By showing others the same consideration you hope to receive, you make the world a more positive place. It also helps prevent conflicts and misunderstandings because everyone feels the same way. Living by this reminds us that our actions have an impact on others, so choosing kindness is always the best choice. Ultimately, it’s about treating people with the fairness that everyone deserves and you'll receive it as well.

When you plan homework, practice, or personal work, you also have the opportunity to accomplish your goals and lessen any feeling of stress. To value your time is to also value others time because when you deliver, when you honor your commitments, you are valuing time not only your own, and the respect of others for their time and their work. In team work, good time management done on both the individual and group levels will also ensure they are valuing their contribution and ultimately success for the whole group. McRaven emphasizes respect for discipline, preparation and perseverance all of which depend on time efficiency. Value your time is about responsibility - to yourself and to others. When you practice this on a daily basis you will not only achieve your own goals, you'll build positive and respectful relationships along the way.

Small things can make huge impacts. You can turn someone’s bad day good by doing something small to help them out or make them feel better. Some ways are being polite and respectful, complimenting, picking up for others. These little things that take a second can fix someone’s whole day. This can cause that person to pass on the act and do the same thing for someone else. That can start a cycle that can get to many more people, making your one small action get to numerous people after you.

From admiral mcravens speech one thing that stuck with me was the importance of teamwork. He explained If you want to change the world, find someone to help you paddle. Growing up I always thought things would be easier to do on my own because I felt doing things myself would satisfy how I want things done. But after his speech I realized it’s about accepting the help not because you need it but because it can be very beneficial to yourself and others. Teamwork brings people together, allows people to consider other perspectives. Teamwork can also allow you to practice being open minded and collaborate with others.

Admiral McRaven reminds us that life isn’t fair and everyone fails. This is a shared experience. Respect for others begins with self respect. Know your own value and understand that you struggle too. Just like you, your classmates, teachers, friends, and family face challenges and failures you don’t see. Look for understanding of their difficulties not judgement. When we respect each other's failures of ignoring them, we build a foundation of respect and trust. This is how real friendships are made. Next time a friend is struggling with a failure or obstacles, remember that you were them at one point, offer your respect and don’t add to their challenges.

In my experience I always saw that people who put others before themselves are never truly happy. The reason I say this is because there are times when people sacrifice things they don’t want to for others since they don’t wanna seem selfish. In other words you have to take into consideration what’s best for you rather than continuing to try and please others.

In Admiral McRavens speech to graduates he brings up the idea of teamwork. He tells a story about him and his group having to use paddles on a boat. In order for the boat to move they would have to coordinate when to paddle all together at the same time. Without having respectful communication and working together this task could not be done. This respect and communication can be applied in our daily lives. Having respect toward our family leads to healthy relationships with them. For instance if your parent has a set curfew or rules and you break them the respect is no longer there. In order for teamwork and respect to work both you and your parent need to follow those set expectations, and have a meaningful conversation about why those rules are set in the first place. If there are no respectful conversations then both sides will bump heads and won’t work together. Having respect goes both ways.

Admiral McRaven speech was very impactful and gave great examples of things such as don’t judge people by appearance but by their heart. If you judge people without knowing what they’ve been through, you’ll end up hurting them. Instead, try to understand them and get to know them better instead of hating them for no reason at all. An example would be when a person is sharing an idea but you don’t agree with them, you shouldn’t just disregard them of their idea and make them go with your idea. Instead you should be respectful by talking it out with them until you guys find a solution that you both agree on or even combining ideas wouldn’t be a bad idea. So, you should always treat others kindly and respectfully like how McRaven said if you want to change the world, you’ll need a partner or someone by your side to change the world.

I learned their discipline, patience, and their integrity. I stopped measuring my self against others and started to use the lessons I learned to grow in my own way. The biggest thing one can learn is that respecting yourself means to know that you are on your own path and value and comparison only has value if it inspires growth, not doubt.

Arjan Lorigo:

No matter the sport, you'll be faced with an opponent whether that's a person, or a team. The goal is to overstep, overcome or to do better than them, to beat, to win, to be the best. Sports more often than not, bring out the raw and intense emotions of most people, with all the preparation and training one does for competition, these emotions can become aggressive and disrespectful. The idea of winning and being "better" is the only thing in sight and respect is lost. Remembering that your opponents put in the same work, make the same sacrifices and share the same love for the sport you do is the first step to truly win in the sport and in life. Without your opponent there is no sport, there is no passion, respect them for the mutual love you both share and the sacrifices you both make.

I feel like an important skill everybody should have is to work without motivation. Motivation is defined as a person's general desire or willingness of someone to do something and there are many times in anybody's life when you may not want to or have the motivation to do something that could be important to you or others. This is what makes working without motivation so important, if your able to overcome the need for motivation your able to accomplish things that you want infinitely quicker because you aren’t waiting till you feel up to the challenge. This shows a general respect for yourself because you have to respect yourself enough to know when doing something is important enough to not put off until you feel up for it. Waiting till your motivated can leave you doing things at the last minute and even missing deadlines due to waiting for no reason and when this is done in a group environment you could let the group down. This is why working without motivation is important and shows respect for yourself and others.

The speech of Admiral McRaven, about respect and providing many real life examples and experiences that individuals had to overcome while making the Navy SEALS was very important. The two lessons that give the most insight of the importance to respect would be “The lesson of being your best while experiencing your worst “ and “the lesson of ringing your bell”, these two are both very significant to me as in my future goals because it gives me the motivation to move forward even with any obstacles that may create a bump on the road later on. If you're wanting to be determined to make it to your future goals, you need to make sure that you are well prepared for the unexpected challenges that will be held to get to the end or that may slow you down from achieving those particular goals. To also meet your future goals, it requires you to have a lot of respect for yourself because without respect you won’t be able to get anywhere if you can’t pursue your value, purpose, or even your standards that you set to get to that point in your goals. Moving forward, to “The Lesson of Ringing your bell”, in Admiral McRaven’s speech he said ‘if you want to change the world don’t ever, ever ring the bell’, that bell in anyone’s perspective including my own can mean various things. As in just because the task is difficult doesn’t mean to give up so easily. Instead of giving up easily make it possible in your way to make progress to get to your designated target with your goals where you feel most confident in.

Admiral Mcraven emphasizes respect comes with doing little things that may seem simple and almost meaningless he’s said “ so if we can get the bed part of our day right every morning, maybe we can get out lives right too!” The idea that little tasks and consistency creates a bigger image and positive impact in our life’s overtime. This is called the “compound effect” results don’t appear overnight and aren’t a instant reward nothing really is in life but steady repeated action creates progress that only gets you closer and eventually leads to results. Consistency, a form of self discipline and respect means aligning your words and actions. Constant reminders of how and why you are doing these little acts of respect brings value regardless of the goal it can apply to academics, sports or even a personal interest. Its never easy and we encounter many hardships acknowledging these challenges and finding ways to improve them only propels us forward. For me sticking to a routine with little act’s has brought a sense of accomplishment and confidence it pushes me to be and do better in school, sports and even being consistent with my friends and family. So having the respect for yourself to push and do these “meaningless little things” makes a huge positive difference.

Learning to appreciate sacrifices because they are a lot of things that people take for granted and people just really need to learn to appreciate that. A quick example of this is people who are chefs or make food. They are the reason’s why you are able to say “hey let’s go out to eat on Saturday night”. They work day and night and are there from the crack of dawn to sunset from getting prep done to cooking all day and perfecting meals. This is a great sacrifice that a lot of people take for grant and don’t really appreciate. This person is always working really hard to be able to not only feed but to let people have a good night with a good meal.

I was told by my mentor that I just have to be myself and ALWAYS show respect. I took this advice very seriously and I made many new friends that year. I made new friends and explored different areas in my life that I never had and it’s bettered my life so much. I even made up with people I had problems with in the past and we even became friends. Also in my work life, when you constantly show respect even when you don’t want to or have challenges you will have so many new opportunities given to you and gain new contacts and relationships that can help you in the future.

Admiral McRaven went through extreme measures for training everyday for 6 months. This shows self respect because he stayed throughout hardships and endured long training hours, and never rang the bell to give up. He applies this to our lives by saying “let our bell be our last breath” this can impact one’s life by showing that even though we have hard times or bad days you can work through it and wait for better days. Mcraven’s lesson that I took away from this was to not give up and you are capable of more than you think.

Enjoy the grind. when i was in wrestling I was taught to Enjoy the grind, when you hear this you think of enjoying the hard work enjoying the exhaustion now this is all part of it but as the years gone by I realized enjoying the grind meant loving the shortcomings then losses the bad practices so you can come back stronger and set a goal for the next time your on the mat. I then started to imply this into my life with any task I did I enjoyed the hard work I enjoyed the people part of the hard work making this all possible because in life when you do challenging things the outcome is only beneficial to you and others to see. Appreciating that this short time that you have to do these hard things in what ever you do in life is only temporary but the life lessons you get out of it are forever including the strength. So next time you get put in a hard situation feeling like it’s going to be forever embrace it and enjoy it it’ll only make u be able to tell the story of how you overcame what was thrown at u with a good attitude and coming out of it with strength. So enjoy the grind.

All around school respect is one of the most important qualities. When in school everyday you see others who are different than you and have different values, opinions, beliefs. No matter what everyone should be treated with the same respect. In class I had to work on a project with four other people, and throughout the whole project everyone was disagreeing on what we should put in the poster. However, we had to stop and show respect by letting everyone share there ideas. At the end we were able to reach our goal together and finish our project getting an A. In this lesson we showed respect in a school setting by coming together and respecting each others ideas in order to reach our ultimate goal.

Respecting yourself and doing things that are in your best interest that will get you ahead are extremely important and should always be done but don't get that mixed up with being selfish just think about what's the best decision for you because you will have to learn to choose the right decision over the easy decision

Admiral McRaven emphasized how if we want to change the world we have to get over being a sugar cookie and keep moving forward. The lesson is to "get over being a sugar cookie" by accepting life's unfairness and continuing to move forward when you fail, even when you've done everything right. I feel that this also applies to how life is unfair, it teaches us to accept the instances of unfairness, acknowledge the disappointment, and continue moving forward instead of giving up. Imagine you studied really hard for a math test, but you still got a bad grade. It's easy to feel unmotivated and think you're just not good at math. But, instead of dwelling on the bad grade or "being a sugar cookie", you can talk to your teacher to understand what you missed, get extra help. That way, you're turning a setback into a learning opportunity and moving forward. This shows respect by accepting failure and learning from them shows self respect. It means valuing your own growth and not giving up on yourself.

This is why I chose to do respect that we have towards our family. Family is much more than just people you live with, think of it on the deeper level our families our there with us through thick and thin, yes we may argue with our family yet they have always stuck by our side through everything, the bond we have with our family is an unbreakable bond that you can’t find in everything. This may not be for everyone to have an unconditional love or bond with our family but for those who do we should appreciate it and respect them for that. This is why I chose to know the worthy and respect our family while they are still here with us.

Whether it’s at school, at work, with friends, family, or strangers, it’s easy to know if someone respects you by hearing the tone of their voice, but it’s also easy for others to know if you respect them by the tone of your voice too. It’s important to know the tone of your voice whenever you’re speaking to others by maintaining as much eye contact as possible, making positive comments about what the person is saying, or replying to them with a positive tone of voice. Other ways of being respectful include paying attention to what the other person is saying, and showing respect through your body language. Make sure that you’re fully facing the other person, and hand movements help too. It shows that you care about what the other person is talking about, and it also shows that you are engaged in the conversation, even if it is not in your interest. Without showing respect in these ways, co-workers may think that you don’t care about the work, friends might think that you don’t want to talk with them, family members may think that you are not interested in being engaged with them and that you’re being disrespectful, and strangers might feel less inclined to being engaged with you, and they will think that you are being rude and disrespectful towards them. Simple gestures help show respect, for instance, shaking hands, or small gestures that show interest, or even a smile or nod, giving your full attention to the person, or even just the way you speak when you respond to them.

In the video Admiral McRave talked a lot about respect but what does it really mean. Respect is a way of treating or thinking about something or someone. It is a key building block to fostering for good relationships and building friendships. Without respect you wouldn’t get to learn or grow because you don’t think other’s opinion matter or you just wouldn’t care. An example of this might be in sports you might mess up on a play and the coach gets on you. You could ether look at him and show you care or just blow him off and don't care about what he is saying. Which if you choose to show him respect it will help you grow as a person so hopefully next time you learn from that mistake. One more example could be showing respect to your opponent.

The tortoise accepted the mocking and showed a quiet self-respect and willingness to prove his worth and dispute his disadvantage. The humbling experience leads to the rabbit congratulating the tortoise both becoming friends who respect each other’s strengths. The story shows that you should never judge or disrespect others because of what they can or can’t do. Treating someone with respect can impact each person's life in a special way and can also impact your own life. Not only are you showing respect for others by also showing respect to the people around you.

We often take ourselves down, depressing ourselves based on what other people think of us. This is a common form of anxiety. We will hear, or make up what someone may think or say about us and we start focusing on that letting it depress us. Sometimes we don’t even know what someone may truly think of us but we’ll still let that thought stab us, trapping us in this mental cage that keeps us away from happiness. But when we really look at people’s thoughts about you, those thoughts don’t really matter and usually don’t actually exist, you usually just make them up in your mind, but unless you ignore those thoughts and ideas, freeing yourself from the cage you will never truly be happy, and respect yourself until you can accept these ideas about you, and turn them positive.

I’ve learned that one of the best ways to show respect is by listening before you speak. When you really pay attention to others, it shows them that their thoughts and feelings matter. Admiral McRaven reminds us that respect is the foundation of leadership, and listening is a simple way to practice that lesson. By listening first, we can avoid misunderstandings and show maturity in how we handle situations. It also builds stronger friendships and makes people feel valued. Respecting others through listening doesn’t just help them—it also helps us grow as students, friends, and future leaders.

Admiral Mcraven incorporates what happened with the Sugar cookie drill by showing how life isn’t always in your favor, but you still have to get through it. No matter what happens you are going to fail. Last Year during school my gpa was a 2.5 for about 4 months wasn’t good at all because I wasn’t trying at all. So I made a decision that I was going to lock in get above a 3.0. I ended the year with a 3.6. What I had to deal with was adversity because I had to climb out of a hole I dug myself into. I had to academically comeback on top. What I remember was how bad I felt everyday going to school all the anger I had didn’t go away until I was on top of the mountain. This happened because I wasn’t respecting myself. Which is important to have. Thank You.

As a young child, I was taught how to respect others, but not necessarily how to respect myself. As I grew up, I started realizing that I didn’t have much respect for myself, which made me lack responsibility, confidence, respect, and many more things. I think seeing and learning how others were confident and secure about who they are, motivated me more to start being respectful towards myself. Throughout that process, I did learn that in order to respect others, I must respect myself first. As they say, in order to love for others, you must love yourself first. In this case, it’s in order to respect others you must respect yourself. I am sure that once you’re able to do so, you and your family will be respected because you have that recognition that once you respect yourself, you’re able to do the same for others. Other than that, it makes you grow in many other ways. This connects with respect because in order to have a healthy, secure, and unison family or environment, you must show respect to yourself first before respecting others, just as Admiral McRaven did with him and those around him.

Being a good leader is more than just knowing how to give orders. It’s being able to treat and show respect to everyone no matter who they are. Like in Admiral McRaven’s example of making your bed, having your bed made shows that you respect yourself enough to take care of how your room looks. An important quality of being a good leader is to respect others no matter who they are. If you can’t respect the people you’re supposed to lead how do you expect they to trust and respect your judgment. When you give respect you earn respect and that’s what makes a good leader.

Active listening means fully focusing, understanding their message, and responding. In school if a teacher is speaking during class you must give them your fullest attention, to show them that you respect them. By giving your complete attention you show respect which will make the teacher feel valued. Listening while others speak tells people that they have your full attention and it will allow them to know that you are a respectful person. You should always be respectful as other people speak, whether they are giving instructions or it is a simple conversation with a friend. Everyone appreciates being listened to and respected in that way.

Motivation comes and goes, but if you keep showing up for school, work, or your goals you will still make progress. Even in the little things you do every day add up into something bigger over time. This lesson shows respect for yourself because you are not giving up on your own future. It also shows respect for the people around you such as teachers, and friends because you are proving they can count on you. On a bigger level, it respects your community since you are setting an example that effort and commitment are worth something. Staying consistent is basically a way of showing you care about where you are heading and who’s supporting you along the way.

“ Showing respect gets you a long way “: Showing respect to your peers gets you a long way because when people see you not showing respect they automatically think your a disrespectful person and a bad person they will most likely not associate themselves with. You don’t want to be known as disrespectful, So just showing a little respect and being nice to people will show them that you can be respectful and talk to people. Also people never forget when you are Kind to them and maybe one day they will remember you and help you out with something . My lesson demonstrates respect for the community because i said to be respectful to everyone you run into even if u don’t like the person or don’t know them yet and people will have a good impression of you. I always show teachers and students respect once they see you trying they will show more appreciation to. In my example anyone you associate with is being respected , Overall you will get farther in life being nice to others and giving respect and people will give respect back.

Family is something that should always be your priority. Treating your family with respect is a thing that should be done. One reason is because many family members such as parents may have made sacrifices or help guide you through the most difficult times in life. Always take family opinions into consideration because they can always have a good reason. Many family members may not show that respect but that doesn’t mean you should not show respect. The reason why is because it can show them that they are still receiving respect when they are not showing it.

In the commencement speech given by Admiral McRaven, he gives multiple life lessons he endured while growing up. One of the life changing lessons that resonated with me is simply never giving up. This stood out to me because pushing through fallouts helps build a resilient mindset, transforming setbacks into opportunities. Even though throughout life you are guaranteed to fail, to never give up means leading to personal growth , valuable experiences, and even strengthens a person’s potential to succeed. Each failure provides wisdom that can guide your future decisions. However, never giving up and understanding your intentions means no other human can belittle your aspirations or wishes. Remaining grounded and disciplined keeps you focused on the process of achieving your goals rather than getting distracted by the discouraged failures or initial successes, creating a stable and positive environment to keep moving forward in life.

It’s important to understand that in life everyone is different whether that be race, religion, political ideology, sexuality, introverted/ extroverted etc and thats okay. Instead of letting these differences divide us as classmates, coworkers, teammates, or as a society we should instead respect each other and work together to progress as a group because at the end of the day we’re all still human and that should be the main reason that units us as a society. We all just want to live a happy life so why not help each other to reach that same goal.

When people are in a heated debate they often disrespect each other by Constantly cutting them off in the middle of their sentence while someone is talking or express themself in a negative manner for their dis taste of your opinion. Instead of cutting them off, you can say "I disagree with your opinion" or 'I agree to disagree" to opinions you don't agree with in a respectful manner. Respect fits in because every has a opinion to say or express in the community, to bring ideas that can help people in need or make a change in the system. If you treat others on how you want to be treat they will show respect and let you talk and share your views or idea and vice versa. You can respect people while they are talking by being quite and giving them full attention. By respecting others with a kind gesture or by giving them full attention, people will be nice to you or admire you.

"Self-respect is the fruit of discipline; the sense of dignity grows with the ability to say no to oneself" -Abraham Joshua Heschel

One thing I have discovered in life is discipline today creates freedom tomorrow. Whether it's finishing homework, doing chores, or following through on a commitment made to a friend, the small choices I make today create my tomorrow. When I am disciplined, I respect myself by not giving up on my goals and I respect others by showing them they can trust me. It’s not always easy to be disciplined but yet it reveals how much respect I have for my time, my tomorrow, and the people in my world. This connects with Admiral McRaven's speech when he spoke about even the smallest of actions such as making your bed can lead to achieving bigger goals. When I practice discipline now I am preparing myself for my future challenges and showing respect for the time I have in life.
