Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day (May 19)

The founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, arrived in Samsun on May 19, 1919, to start a popular uprising against the decision of the World War I allies. The date of Atatürk’s arrival in Samsun is accepted as the starting date of the Turkish War of Independence in Turkey. Following Atatürk’s wish, the Turkish government declared May 19 to be Youth and Sports Day and made it an official holiday in 1938. In the run-up to the May 19 celebrations, young Turkish athletes carry the national flag from Samsun, a Black Sea port from where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk started Turkey’s War of Independence in 1919, to Ankara, the country’s capital. The marathon usually takes about 10 days. The Turkish president accepts the flag at a ceremony on May 19. Various sports events take place on May 19 throughout Turkey. Many people celebrate this day by watching athletes perform at their local stadiums or by participating in sports events that are open to the public, such as half-marathons. University students usually prepare special programs for their teachers and parents on this day. People lay wreaths to Atatürk’s monuments and hang Turkish flags outside their windows. The Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day is an official holiday in Turkey. All administration buildings, post offices, schools, and most businesses are closed on this day.

TURKISH DESSERTS (BAKLAVA)
In Turkey, dessert is often a social ritual, a course meant to be shared. At any time of day or night, friends can be found congregating to sip Turkish coffee or tea from dainty glasses, and should you care to accompany that beverage with a roll, pastry, or snack, there's much to choose from. Baklava is just the tip
of the iceberg—on a recent trip to Istanbul, I fell in love with the country's vast range of desserts, while developing a far deeper understanding of the Turkish sweet tooth. Here's a look at some of the most popular desserts you'll find.

Baklava was just as ubiquitous as I'd anticipated, though not all brands are created equal. It's always best eaten fresh (I certainly wouldn't recommend "saving it for later"—believe me, I tried!) and thankfully it's socially acceptable to devour it for breakfast, fresh out of the oven.

The pastry comes in numerous shapes, sizes, and flavors; cevizli baklava (walnut baklava) and fistikli baklava (pistachio baklava) are what you see most often in the States: flaky layers of phyllo dough, stacked and brushed with butter and sugar syrup, and then cut into rectangles or diamonds. But keep an eye out for other variations, like ceviz dolama, a round and slightly more compact baklava made with walnuts, or the similarly shaped saray sarmasi, which features a combination of both nuts. Then there's dürüm, which is made with only a single layer of phyllo, so it's composed almost entirely of ground pistachios that turn each piece a vibrant green. And wait, there's more! Like special square baklava, which contains the traditional layers of phyllo but bulges with double the pistachio filling; visenli baklava, packed with sour cherries; and the delightful kestaneli baklava, in which phyllo dough is wrapped around a candied chestnut so it actually assumes that same, rotund shape.
_Yagmur Yıldırım

Tire is a district which is expressed as “The Locality of Monks” by the historian Pachmeres, “Famous City of the Rums” by Şerafeddin in his Victory Book and as “Magnifical City” by the famous traveller Evliya Çelebi (1611-1682) in his Travel Book. It is among the rare districts which reflect the spirit of the Aegean that cannot be found in other places easily.

The name of Tire, which is a pretty district of the Aegean, is accepted as Thira, Thyeira, Tyrha, Apeteira, Teira in various sources. Even this richness of names is the most perceptible evidence of the ancientness of the district.
Tire is one of the cities that has the rich cultural heritage of history, which had hosted the Hittites, Phrygians, Lydians, Persians, Romans and Byzantines. But, the documentary information about the history of Tire cannot go beyond the Roman period so well. Or in other words, the period that starts with 2000 Before Christ has not been placed on a reliable ground yet.
It is also specified in historical documents that the famous Roman Emperors Julius Caesar, Augustos and Trian had granted a part of Tire territories to the Artemisia Temple. The findings obtained from the lands of this temple have a wide place in Tire Museum.

-Yağmur Yıldırım
