We notice this motif of light and dark throughout the Tombs of Atuan and we have seen how it connects to Tenars identity. We have seen her go through this incredible identity crisis, this battle between Tenar and Arha the eaten one. I infer that it was Thar dying and the sorcerer showing was what made arha start to rethink. Before the death of Thar, Tenar had died. But since Thar died, it has given Arha the chance to grow, to re-think. We are seeing Arha lose her current identity and start transforming into Tenar. I feel as if Tenar has been buried alive and has been fighting to get out. Thanks to Thar dying and the sorcerer showing up, Tenar has finally built the courage to break free. I personally think that the sorcerer is a symbol to Arha and not as much a character. I think that Arha can relate to the sorcerer and I think the sorcerer reminds me of Tenar. We see that the sorcerer at the end of chapter 7 says take care Tenar, and later in chapter 8 Kossil says take care Arha. This relates to our real world because us humans also go through identity chrisists. We are always trying to figure out who we are. As we grow older in life our identity starts to change, this might cause us to rethink our beliefs. Sometimes people transform into a whole new person, just like how Tenar has changed to Arha. Do these two people have the same beliefs? Do Arha and Tenar have the same beliefs? No. In the words of Adam Grant, “Rethinking might not always have a positive outcome, however, never re-thinking is a set up for misery.”

Looking at Adam Grant’s ideas on being able to change, and how we change, we can see some connections, between his ideas of the real world, with the ideas in the book, and it can help us see why it was so easy for Arha to reconsider her whole life. In Adam Grant’s podcast he talks about how it is so hard to change a single story, and how people might never change their ideas. He did research that he brought a bunch of students from Harvard, and made them into a project where they would have to debate with a random partner. The catch was the random partner was a trained professional, and was trained to rip all the ideas from them, and just utterly humiliate them. He talks about this and how students were mad and hurt, but he said that it was the people that took from and learned, that are the people to break a single story, and you can see that with Arha. As Arha brings Ged to the coffin, Arha comforts him by telling him that she will give him food and water, and as she was leaving he states “Take care, Tenar”(114), and as she dreams, she dreams of a woman as she says tenderly “Tenar, Tenar”(116). And as she breaks through the metaphorical clay and stone, light shines from the day as she wakes up, and with “exultation”, she states “I have my name back. I am Tenar!”(116). This connects to Adam Grant ideas, as after she was told the earth shattering advice by Ged, her whole reality changed, and she didn’t run from the fear she came towards, breaking the “stone barriers” to get to it, and that is how you can rethink you single story, by diving headfirst into the conflict that dictates your ideas. And just like some students in Harvard, Arha moved forward, and that is how she was so easily able to reconsider her ideas and her whole life. As Adam Grant concluded his podcast he stated that “failing to think again is a problem” and that is why we have to change our ideas, and just like Arha we must change at times, and it can result in good things, and for Arha that was her sense of identity.

Le Guin’s words “[Fantasy] isn't factual, but it is true”, is somewhat surprising as throughout the book this genre of Science Fiction might have different rules of life, but it still teaches us insights of the Human experience, through the idea of “identity”. Throughout the book the theme of identity has taken place throughout every chapter, using motifs and symbols, like the idea of light and dark. And as we look at these motifs and symbols we can see the wisdom that it gives to us. One example of this is after Arha finds her name again, we can see the motif of light and dark, as she “Her despair grew so great that it burst her breast open and like a bird of fire shattered the stone and broke out into light of day--the light of day, faint in her windowless room.”(116). The idea of the bird breaking through the stone, could be an example of her identity, that was taken away at a young age, and as she was given the role of Arha. As this bird broke through the stone, it broke into the light of day, this could symbolize how their will be a bright future as she now has her identity back, and as it states that it was faint in a windowless room, showing that her identity is still blocked off, but there's still a bit of her identity showing. Summarizing all of this it shows how identity and true identity will always come back to you, no matter how hard you hide it. Another example of a motif of light and dark, is the labyrinth, which is a direct example of her identity, as it is dark, almost unseeable, showing her identity is unclear and unknown. But once Ged arrives he spreads his light through his staff, showing how he opened up a little bit of her dark identity, and as she sees this she is flabbergasted, her whole life is destroyed, as she calls him a thief and wants to torture him. So looking at these motifs and symbols we can see what these insights are, as it tells us how identity can be scary and finding a new identity can be terrifying, and how true identity will always exist no matter how hard you try to close it off. Which are human insights and wisdom to abide by, so even though Fantasy is a world totally different, it is still factual telling us ideas that we can learn from in our own lives.

Question 3

Adam Grant talked about why it is so hard to change your ideas, he talked about an experience he had with his friend, in which he thought he was so right and ended up being proven wrong, and he felt so right that he didn’t even admit that he was wrong. I relate to this as I am someone who is very stubborn, and very competitive so when I think that I am right I will stick to that. So the ideas and themes presented in the book relate to me, as Arha was so easily able to learn from her single stories, and that is very inspiring to me. When the sorcerer first came into the labyrinth Arha was astonished, she did not know any person that would dare come to her land, and especially a man. She was very confused and angered, she wanted to “make his dying longer”(81), and “be punished with worse than lying down in a tunnel alone and dying”(81), showing how because of this new change she was scared and intimidated and wanted to torture him. As days went on she was obsessed with him, she would lose sleep everyday, at times not sleeping at all just staring at him through spy holes, as she stated “she would give him death, death, death, death, death”(88). This relates to me as I am someone who is terrible with change and just like Arha I would not back down even of any challenge. But she starts to learn from her early look of the sorcerer, as we look of the motif of her empathy for the sorcerer, stating “I want the man to live”(91), as she gives the man her cloak so he doesn’t freeze, she would give him her food, and starve herself, she would also talk to the man and give him company. All these symbols represent how she was being empathetic towards this change, and she made up for her mistakes. And that is something that I wish to learn, to really learn from the change, be empathetic to others, because that is the building blocks to life, but really a good person.

What I personally think this statement means is that maybe the stories we hear aren’t true, but the lessons we learn from them definitely are. In chapter six Le Guin Describes the true beauty of the Labyrinth which is very beautiful and was filled with treasure and gems. Before learning this, we all pictured the Labyrinth as a scary dark cave. This might show us the power of inner beauty.

I think a really important theme shown in this book that relates to my life is light where there's darkness. I feel like Arha has been going through a lot of stress and I feel the same way. We all have a lot going on in our lives and I personally know it’s not always the best. However, I feel as if my friends, family, laughter, sports and community is the lightness to our dark abyss.
