I grew up in Broward County Florida playing 3 different sports. My culture expected me to be good at sports. It pushed me so hard that I became a division 1 athlete in football. I understand what it is like to be affected by sports and I also understand what it is like to have a culture that is strongly based in sports. Sports have given me a different life than many other people have where I'm from. I might not like it everyday but I would be in a much different place without football.

College Football Culture

College football culture deals with the culture of the school and the culture of the people in the school. Some of the biggest things that make a college culture are traditions, and a lot of these traditions come from college football (CFP staff, 2024). Lots of teams focus on volunteering, brotherhood, and supporting the values of their local community. Volunteering allows players to interact with the community and the cultures in the community. Here at WVU, football players often volunteer at events for the children's hospital. This shows support for the kids and sometimes it can provide hope for families in need. The players get to know the families and sometimes they learn life lessons in respect, gratefulness, and inspiration. Brotherhood brings all memes of a team together even if they are from different backgrounds. For example, someone from California will have a different view of culture than someone jamaica. It brings everyone together to meet a common goal. It also teaches how different people can be. College football supports the values of the local community by showcasing them in games and other media. For example, WVU supports coal miners by showcasing a giant block of coal before each game. The players from florida have no connection to this culture but being on the team teaches about how important it is to WVU.

Who Play Football?

Football is usually an all male sport, which is why brotherhood is so important to many teams. People from all over the world play this sport, even though it is only extremely popular in the USA. This focuses on college football but professional football is trying to expand across the world by playing games in other countries. Professional football needs to understand the culture of the other country before playing there so they don't run into any issues like the eagles and packers. These 2 teams have green colors and the places they played in brazil encourage people to not wear green. So, even though people from all over can play this game the organization needs to be better at understanding culture

Injuries are a common part of college football. They may be avoidable for some players but usually get hurt during their careers. Injuries can affect the mental health of the players because they have to change routine. They also have to go to rehab and treatment which is usually painful. It affects team culture because it changes how the player can volunteer, how they can impact the community, and how it can affect brotherhood. It also changes the future of the injured player because it can affect playing time and ability to come back to the game.

Being injured affects mental health and affects the way you think about the game. This means that people may never play the same again because of fear, confidence, or recovery time. It causes fear because a player won't want to get hurt again. It changes confidence because you'll be thinking about your injury too much and not be focused on the game. It can also ruin the momentum of the season. Recovery time affects someone because you can come back earlier or later then you are supposed to.

Being injured affects brotherhood because it can change the personality of the person that's injured. The other players might want to help the person who hurt but they can't really do anything about it. It might make them feel alone because they have to change their whole routine. Also then injured people might not be able to hangout as much or do all the things they used to do with the team. It can affect team relationships in a negative way.

The first article is Get-Right Day: NFL players detail their painful, gritty post-game recovery routines by Bishop. This article talks about the daily and weekly injuries that professional football players face. It doesn't talk about facts but it does interview NFL players as they get hurt and recover from injuries that happen during the game. One player was injured during a game and told the reporter “a pain scale of five this late into the season is basically healthy.” another player told the reporter he had a bruise the size of an orange on his leg but it should be fine. Later on a doctor told him that he should go to the hospital immediately but the team didn't let him go till after the game. These stories show how serious and how common injuries are in football. It also shows that the players often play through injuries when they should not.

The last article is called Return to play and risk of repeat concussion in collegiate football players: comparative analysis from the NCAA Concussion Study (1999-2001) and CARE Consortium (2014-2017). This article takes statistics approach to look at the number of concessions and how long it takes to see a repeat concussion. With the new rules for safety in 2017 only 1 repeat concussion in under 10 days was recorded. Most athletes stopped feeling symptoms of their concussion after 6 days. Also the average amount of time between a first concussion and a repeat concussion was 56 days in 2017 compared to 6 days in 2001. This shows a big jump and should continue to get larger as safety improves.
