Whitman is a great democracy. He is considered as the greatest poet of American democracy. A faith in the inherent dignity and nobility of the common man is the very root and basis of Whitman's democracy. In his view all men and women are equal and all professions are equally honorable.

And the common message across all of the poems is the cycle of life and death 
“When lilacs last in the dooryard” In this line Walt Whitman was comparing life and death cycles with the civil war and life it self. 
That captures what it means to be human and it shows you the never ending cycle of life and death where lilac is a personification of death. 
And one of the most important ideas he discussed is how the human beings are not in touch with nature when it is the only constant thing they have in their lives 
And he also said “what is grass” which is a metaphor for the cycle of life
