The first breeding programme started in 1972, wth the aim to breed 350 species to sell to individuals and other zoos. The prices depended on the demand and rarity of the birds. In 1976, the bird park stopped the breeding of birds for sale and instead embarked on efforts to conserve rare birds, especially those of south east asia.

Construction began in February 1969, and was completed by late 1970. Jurong Bird Park opened on 3 January 1971 and was there for a total of 52 years.By the time it opened, it was Asia's largest bird park and home to more than 5,000 birds across 400 species, covering 20.2 hectares of land

The new park will offer visitors behind-the-scenes tours of its Avian Health and Research Centre, Avian Nutrition Centre and Breeding and Research Centre, where they can learn about breeding programmes and the park's conservation research efforts
The group said that the new park will have a strong focus on getting visitors involved in conservation. The transitional zones between habitats will be used as educational spaces with information on birds and their behavioural patterns.

During the LJ, we aimed to learn more about the various conservation efforts at mandai bird paradise, and how the park treats the birds. While there, we encountered many different occurrences that proved our hypothesis about how mandai actually strives to ensure the welfare and conservation of the birds. There were many slides around the entire park asking visitors to not feed the birds with their own food, but instead to join the various feeding programmes happening at different times, which allows for visitors to interact with the birds while ensuring the well-being of the birds. One incident that captured both of our attentions, was during the show, Predators on Wings. Throughout the whole show, they encouraged the birds to exhibit their natural behaviours by giving verbal cues or treats, but they never once forced them. For example, one of the birds did not listen to the cues given by the staff, and instead of forcing it, they gave the bird more time to fly down, but in the end it didnt, which the staff covered for by giving extra information instead. this shows that they do not force the birds or treat them like “prisoners” and instead embrace the birds’ will
