In this padlet, I will throw light on the meaning of the terms Standard English and non-standard English. I will compare both of them and will let you know the different scenarios and settings where each one of this is used.

National varieties adhere to established rules, originating from 18th-century linguistic prescriptions. English, originating in Anglo-Saxon England, is spoken globally, with unique standards in countries like the UK, US, Canada, and others.

As a result of colonization, English serves as a lingua franca and is widely taught, with British English in Europe and American English in Latin America and East Asia. Regional variations persist, influenced by local cultures and languages.

According to the article, there are many arguments about Standard English, but it is necessary to insist on a norm for English. Strevens (1981) argues that Standard English is valuable because it provides a way of accounting for a range of observable distinctions and attitudes, offers a label for the grammatical and lexical components of teaching English, and constitutes the unifying element within the enormous diversity of the English language . On the other hand, Rowley (1978) argues that it is not strange to hear and see new English forms in other countries because the English form used follows their environment and meets the cultural demand of a certain country. However, many people may be afraid that they will be laughed at because their English is not like what people in some certain areas speak, so they always pursue the “Standard English” .

2.How has the spread of English led to the emergence of different varieties of the language?

The article explains that as more people learn English, more varieties of English emerge. English is spoken in any place of the world, and therefore, many people are confused about whether there is Standard English and what it is. The article mentions that there are many kinds of English, such as American English, British English, Singapore English, Indian English, and Philippine English. In China, for example, everyone is required to learn English when they are very young, but few people care which variety of English they intend to learn . The article also notes that in China, a new English variety called Chinglish has emerged gradually, which is a mix of English and Chinese . Therefore, the spread of English has led to the emergence of different varieties of the language due to the influence of local languages, cultures, and environments.

The conclusion of the passage is that there is a need for further research on non-standard English and its recognition by teenagers. The study mentioned in the passage found that while recognition rates of non-standard English were quite high, the majority of respondents identified the language in the stimulus sentences as of an inferior type. The study also found significant differences in school types and gender in terms of correct production of standard English versions of non-standard English forms.
