Many themes are presented in The Selection, but there is one universal theme. For example, the universal theme is true love. The main character and author seem to be firm believers in true love when America says "That was was all it took. His lips were on mine and I couldn't think about anything anymore" (Cass 14). Cass shows how she feels about love through the words of America. This example was from the beginning of the book, but this theme progresses throughout the entire story.
The universal theme is shown again later on in the novel. When Aspen comes to the palace, America and Aspen reunite and "every touch is familiar" (Cass 291). They haven't seen each other in forever, but their love for each other is still the same as it was before. This is how true love is the universal theme because no matter how long they have been separated, when the get back to together, their love is so strong that it's like nothing has changed. In conclusion, true love is the obvious universal theme in The Selection.

The book I read for this assignment is called The Selection. The author of this book is Kiera Cass. The novel is young adult fiction and is semi realistic. The book is about a girl named America Singer, who is a five in the Caste system of Illea, the country where she lives, who signs up, thinking she won't have a chance, to a competition to be the new queen and wife to the prince. She breaks up with her secret boyfriend and gets chosen to be in the selection. She unexpectedly becomes friends with prince and develops some feelings for him. There is a surprise twist at the end, but the book ends with many unanswered questions.
I would rate this book a six out of ten. It is very entertaining at times, but the ending, in my opinion, is awful. The ending is not an ending at all. In fact, it is a cut off between the other books in the series. If you like series books, then this is good for you, but for me, it was stupid to read a whole book and not find out what happens. I would recommend this book to someone who is willing to read the whole series. However, if you want to read just one book, it is not the book for you.

The Young Folks wrote a review of The Selection back in 2012. They think that is a good book but quite predictable. The give a brief and accurate summary of the novel. It is compared to The Bachelor as well as The Hunger Games. It is quite the typical dystopian society novel, they say. They like the characters and are excited to see what comes next.
I somewhat agree with The Young Folks' review of The Selection. I do agree that it is pretty predictable, but there a few twists that I would not have expected. I didn't really think about the novel's predictability until I read a review on the book. One part I don't agree with, however, is the excitement to read the other novels in the series. I don't like not knowing what happened or not having an ending to the story. Overall, I thought The Young folks reviewed The Selection well and I mostly agree with what they said.

A major character in The Selection is America Singer. She is the main character and story is told from her point of view. America affects everything in the novel because it is about her. She affects the other characters because most of the characters have a relationship of some type with America. She even starts the novel off by talking about her and her mom and how one decision could result in their problems "solved, gone forever" (Cass 1). Every thing that happens in the story is some way related to America. Therefore, America affects the entire novel.
America has many traits that make her character stand out. For instance, America is a very feisty person. The first date she went on with the prince, she kicked (Cass 117). America is also very persistent. She doesn't ask for much but when she does, she really wants it. She demanded the guards let her outside saying "no...no. I need....outside". until they let her out (Cass 112). America's edgy personality makes the novel interesting and fun to read. In summary, America has a personality that makes the book great.
I don't relate that much to America. America is somewhat poor and lives in a world with caste systems and princesses. I don't live with any of those things really. Sometimes I have the same personality as America. It depends on what mood I am in, but I can be quite feisty at times. America is very close to her family too. That is one thing that America and I are the exact same in. Overall, America and I have a few things in common.
