Finn comes from a family of monster hunters in Ireland who must protect the world from the monster hunters that invade their town. But Finn doesn't want to be a monster hunter and he's not very good at it - he dreams of being a vet! Darkmouth is exciting and funny, I enjoyed reading it because I felt a lot of sympathy for Finn. It was also very funny at times! I would recommend it to anyone, but particularly people who like fantasy.

Ms Gaskin - Hutchins

Animal farm is a dark political novel disguised as a children’s story, considered by some to be an “adult’s fairy tale”. In the book, animals in a farm group together and overthrow the farmer who exploited their resources, symbolising a monarch or a previous dictator. Once they gain independence, the pigs take control due to their superior intelligence symbolising the leader of a communist party. The pigs promise equality and everyone was happy until the pigs get into a fight and one overthrows another, turning corrupt and very immoral where they lie and brutally execute animals who refuse their regime or cannot work. Eventually the pigs become what the humans once were, symbolising dictatorship in a communist society where all are supposed to be equal due to malpractice of the leaders. The author wrote this from a negative experience of communism, and the book has multiple layers of meaning for all ages to read.
Bob, 8th grade (hone)

This is one of the most beautifully written YA novels I’ve ever read – the story is written in layers and I feel like you could read it a number of times and feel like you’re reading something different each time.

This is a story about a pair of twins living in rural Ireland, they’re both flamboyant dressers and members of a circus family who run the local circus school so they’re already socially doomed from the start. Finch is at the start of his journey of acceptance that he’s gay, something that’s going to be a much bigger deal than it needs to be living where he does, but he’s happy to embrace his identity as an outsider as long as his sister, Birdie, is at his side. When they’re forced to take some time apart, Finch has to discover who he is as an individual rather than one of a pair – it’s a lot for a teenager to cope with in such a short span of time which is what makes it such an intriguing read.

This book is more about this journey than it is actual romance or romantic relationships, the characterisation in this book is something truly beautiful and shows the main characters as a entire people, the good and the bad. Sometimes they can be selfish, uncertain and downright mean but that’s what makes them real people.

This title is so heartfelt and well written, it’s found itself a spot on my incredibly exclusive re-read shelf. I would recommend it for readers of all ages as a wholesome and thoughtful read.

Ela (Shackleton)

It is not a children’s book - ‘Who Moved My Cheese?’ is a book about four central characters who all represent different facets of humans when faced with different situations. On first sight, it’s quite a simple plot, but it actually is quite meaningful when deeply analysed. It reveals truths about human nature in a way that most people probably wouldn’t want to read about - but it can also further your way of thinking if you interpret it correctly. I recommend this book to anybody from seventh grade and up (to gain full understanding of it and to reflect on what happens) but also to anybody looking for a way to learn how to adapt to sudden, recent, or gradual changes happening in their life.
- Tazkia Sinan, Shackleton (G8)

Beatrice Zaros Hone 19/11/21
The Sad Ghost Club is about ghosts who are anxious and overthink things. We have our main characters Sam and Socks. Sam starts the day on the wrong foot by overthinking about how many hours of sleep he got and he starts to stress because he had an essay due in a few days or weeks (it didn’t specify). Sam gets invited to a party and decides to go but things don’t go to plan. I like this book a lot because it teaches adults and children to not stress about little things and to enjoy things. A quest has been unveiled and the prophecy told dampens the camp's spirit. In the book, we meet new but familiar faces. I'd rate this book a 3/5 because of its twists that appear out of nowhere. I recommend this book for older kids who like adventure and fantasy books.

-Beatrice Zaros

But the strangest thing is when she meets her other mother and father. They want her to stay with them forever. But when Coraline’s other mother traps her real parents, that’s the last straw. She must find a way to save them. I really liked the book, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes sinisterly horrifying, but imaginative books.

-Ayla, Shackleton

All I'll say is, it's a book made to make you doubt every decision Percy makes. This book is a 4.5/5, absolutely phenomenal!

Freddy Riley and Laura are the main characters in this graphic novel. Evident by the title, this story is about the relationship between the characters Laura and Freddy. Similarly to the Heartstopper series, it is about an LGBTQ relationship, although the storyline differs quite a lot to Heartstopper. I enjoyed reading this graphic novel as not only was the storyline interesting, but the illustrations in it were really beautiful! The story talks a lot about feelings relating to relationships, so it's interesting to learn about the main character's (Freddy's) perspective.
I would recommend this graphic novel to grades 9-12 as the storyline is quite serious, but would recommend it to those who enjoy reading about romance or social problems/issues?

He lives in a community of survivors on a series of small islands in a large lake up North. This location is great during summer, as the "restless dead" cannot cross the water. However, each winter the lake freezes over, allowing them to cross into the safe zone. During the book, Peter tries to help prepare for winter and prove his worth to the community (with the help of the village golden boy Cooper). But the safety of Wranglestone is not what it seems.
Caylee- Shackleton

Signs and Symbols is quite a captivating read! I personally enjoyed it quite a bit, though the narration could get rather slow at times. It was written in the 40s, so some language might be a bit too formal for younger readers, and some content might be a bit too mature (a theme in the book is mental health, and another is misfortune). I would recommend it to anybody who feels they have the capacity to understand it, but not to a primary student - I’d say the minimum age would be ten or eleven. To summarise without giving away anything, its about parents who have a son who has referential mania . . . heavy, but so compelling!
- Tazkia, Shackleton

They have a discussion about what they would do the last night of the world, and come to some very profound truths about it that still apply today (it was written in the 50s). It follows the story of a lottery that happens annually in a town of a mere 300 people, and the prize was not at all what one would expect. It has a backbone of morality, but it makes you weigh the true definition of what’s fair, what’s considered good luck, and what’s considered bad luck - and whether those meanings we’ve defined for ourselves should change. I would recommend it for the whole of secondary school - sixth grade and above. It really is compelling, though some may find it boring, because of the slow tension build throughout the course of it. All in all, though, quite compelling!
- Tazkia, Shackleton

Every Falling Star was written by Sungju Lee and details the true story of how Sungju (the main character) survives and escapes from North Korea. Sungju Lee was a normal 12 year old boy, living in Pyongyang with his high-ranking military parents, and dreaming of one-day becoming a general in the North Korean Army. One day, Sungju's father hurriedly came home and announced that they will be going on a 'permanent vacation' in another area in North Korea. They were sent to an impoverished area, lacking facilities, and with no source of income. Sungju's father and mother left to find food and money and never returned. This book presents Sungju's survival living on the streets, stealing and fighting alongside his gang, whom he called 'brothers'.

I very much enjoyed this book, as it gave me a deeper insight into life in the mystery that is North Korea. She warns of the potential consequences of climate change and works to inspire change in humans across the world to help stop climate change. The book is a rallying cry for why we must all wake up and fight to protect the living planet, no matter how powerless we feel. Our future depends upon it.

I listened to this book on my way to and from school everyday for a week, and gave me an unexpected motivation to change. At times I did feel Greta's expressions caused some anxiety but for good reason too. I would recommend this book to people who are interested in Greta's story, but you must be quite strong mentally to be able to take some of the phrases and statistics mentioned in the book.

Davide Antochi (G11) - Shackleton

Blood Brothers (Audiobook Version) by Willy Russell

Blood Brothers was written by Willy Russell and in more recent times, the book has also developed into a West End musical production. Set in 1960's Liverpudlian England, the book tells the story of Mrs. Johnstone, a lower-class single mother of 8, struggling for survival and pregnant with a set of twins. In desperate need of money, she cleans for upper-class Mrs. Lyons, a woman with a strong desire for having children, although unable due to her infertility. Fast-forward into the book Mrs. Johnstone gives one of her twins to Mrs. Lyons to be raised by her, and so the twins are separated at birth. Many years later the two children intersect, playing together although not permitted by Mrs. Lyons, scared that they would discover the truth. Many years later, Mrs. Lyons twin (Edward) becomes a very successful councilman, while Mrs. Johnstone's twin (Mickey) becomes redundant from his factory job and faces homicide charges after an unsuccessful burglary. The book ends in an extremely dramatic manner in which the two boys discover the ugly truth, just too late!

This was an amazing book, one of my personal favourites and I really look forward to watching the musical as well. It shows the effect of education and class on two different sides of the spectrum. The ending is my favourite part of the entire book, lacking no dramatism and really leaving a mark on the reader. I would recommend this book to musical/play enthusiasts but definitely to a Grade 8 and above audience, due to some inappropriate language and connotations.

Davide Antochi (G11) - Shackleton

They are changed so that the woman are not always the damsels in distress, but their own people who can make their own choices. This book is extremely poetic, and can be hard to understand at some points, but is worth it because of the deep understanding it gives its readers about the past and the history of how women have need treated over the years. It was a gorgeous story, and I think it can be related to by basically everybody whose ever felt unrequited love. I would recommend it to anybody whose a teenager to gain full understanding of the novel.
- Tazkia, Shackleton

This one is quite dark! I wouldn’t say it was a read for anybody under the age of fourteen or fifteen (unless they have the obvious maturity to be able to deal with it) because of the dark romantic themes in it. It was also a great read, and a excellent insight into what the lives of some people daily is like - essentially, its about a girl who is reflecting on her memories with a boy who painted her blue - in more ways than one.
- Tazkia, Shackleton

This book is about a girl named Sophie documenting her experiences in World War Two. I really enjoyed this book because it was interesting in many ways but I was also a bit upset that horrible things like this have happened in the past and based off of a true story. I definitely recommend the book to anyone who is in to war books.

-Ankit-Hutchison

Black Beauty is an autobiography of a horse set in the late 1800s. It is a coming of age story and the book takes the reader through the horse's life. It is interesting to read because it helps teach people about animal cruelty and the way people should take care of animals.
-Willa, Shackleton
