Thinking about Theory by Holman Meyerhoffer

Think about everything you've read, heard, seen, and written about Symbolic Interactionism, Coordinated Management of Meaning, and Expectation Violation Theory.
GUIDING QUESTIONS TO WRITE ABOUT: How many ways can you apply these theories to what you observe happening?
👓Think about it on the level of the film's story and the film's intended and actual messages.
👓Think about it on the level of the values and reflections that influence the film's creation
👓Think about it on the level of the meaning or sense that you, as the viewer experiencing this clip in the present moment, bring to the table. May the happy couple's back stage lives be as joyous as their front stage performances make it appear . . . oops, we slipped into Gottman's Presentation of Self . . . an extension of SI! Add at least 1 observation to this Padlet:

Each padlet post should look like this: (Holman's example is based on a cut scene)

The First line should include your name and section
The Second line begins your thoughts.
I can't wait to see everything you all notice in this, shall we say, interesting little film. I am equally eager to hear your thoughts in class on Friday where we will talk about this and several other video clips and just how many ways we can tie these 3 theories into these examples and --- by extension, into a richer understanding of your OWN life and what it means.

See you all in class!

John Gardner: Section A

The movie shows an example of CMM. When Mahana is hiding in the tree crying, the younger man refers to her as ugly, threatens to beat her and says she isn't worth "a three legged cow." The counselor, the older gentleman, talked to her with positive tones and as if she had value and she went along to the Day of Bargaining. As an older man, his better use of "stories" by painting Mahana as "worth it" was successful in influencing her to act in a way that was beneficial to him.

Lindsey Otto: Section B

This clip shows Mahana being talked down to and perceived by others as a "shadow" as well as "foolish" and "ugly." Since this is what her community and even her father thinks of her, she has the same expectations from Johnny Lingo, insisting that he will not come to get her. This is an example of the Expectancy Violations Theory because when Johnny came to get her, he was not afraid to stand within "intimate" proximity of her and treated her with kindness and a smile. This positively defied Mahana's initial expectations and assumptions because he treated her differently than how she is typically treated by those around her.

The theory of symbolic interactionism implies that what we believe to be true about ourselves is based on how those around us, view us. In this clip Mahana is continually sad because the people in her village mock her and make fun of her, they treat her as if she is worth nothing so she believe that she is worth nothing. When Johnny Lingo says that she is worth much more than three cows, and pays eight for her, he is showering her with positive attention and treating her like she is worth a lot. This instantly changes Mahana's attitude, she becomes happier because she is more confident because she is now surrounded by someone who adores her and treats her positively.

I noticed that the words the men were using had a different meaning from what they intended than how I initially interpreted them. The two men were talking about Mahana and one said "She has a face like a stone and looks as though she has missed too many meals". This was interesting to me and showed how meaning can change so much throughout time. I mean this because when he said this comment I knew he meant it as a a negative description but today, these words wouldn't necessarily hold the meaning of unattractiveness.

The reality of Mahana changes because her and the townspeople's perception of her changes after Johnny Lingo changes their minds. At first Mahana continuously comments on how people are mocking her because she doesn't see herself as anything better than what everyone else sees her as. After she is purchased for 8 cows, she because a beautiful women because now not only others, but herself too, believe it to be sure. The clip ends off with Johnny gifting her a mirror, a symbol of how she was always beautiful. His original reality of her was completely different than that of everyone else.

The way people are talking about her is effecting herself. By saying things like "she is ugly", "she isn't worth a three legged cow", and even "I'm willing to give him a cow to just take her off my hands". Those things effect how she perceives herself aka the theory about "looking glass self". Mahana is constantly sad because she knows how the villagers feel about her and she hears these things giving her a complex. At the end of the clip she finds a guy who makes her feel pretty and who talks to her nicely. That all changes her attitude on life giving her another type of shoe to look at her life in.

The man and the boy both describe Mahana as “the little shadow” and “face as stone.” They do not stop and think about Mahana and her feelings. They just criticize her on her looks and actions. The man continues to criticize her looks by asking the boy “why would Johnny Lingo take himself such a wife when he could have any girl on the island?” and the boy replies, “there’s whisper he can get her for nothing.” This exemplifies that both of them are not making an attempt to understand the situation from Johnny Lingo’s perspective. They just criticize Mahana and criticize Johnny Lingo for picking such an unattractive girl. They do not stop to think about all the positive reasons Johnny Lingo is taking Mahana as his wife. The man and boy just blurt out responses instead of thinking before they speak.

Something that came to mind while watching this short clip was everybody's thought process. One main component of SI is the idea of "Thought". Johnny Lingo saw Mahana for her potential, rather than who she seemed to be. His thought process was far different than the community's. The community served as the "generalized other" in a sense. Mahana's reality was created for her because the entire village viewed her as ugly. With that type of communication, how could you not feel a little on the ugly side? However, Johnny Lingo created this reality that she was beautiful with his language about her. For example, "She has always been beautiful". This implies that Johnny Lingo might have built some sort of bias towards Mahana and at the end of the movie, we see her though Johnny's eyes.

Most times when there are two people are talking, they are in the intimate zone, personal zone, social zone, or public zone. Also, there is clear distinction on which people have a relationship and who are strangers. Also, I noticed that the villagers' expectations were violated in a positive way when they expected that Johnny Lingo would only trade them less than the cows they asked for to trade for Mahana. They asked for 3, instead they got 8.

In America, cows are definitely not something that women want to be associated with. But in the video clip, the more cows that are associated with you, the more you are worth. There is that scene where the people are trying to guess how the negotiation for the dowry of Mahana is going to go and throughout the scene you see how symbolic interactionism goes. The symbol of a cow is one of status and it was a consensus generally agreed upon by the people; you are more valuable the more cows you go for. It was pretty cool to see the theory applied in the clip like this.

Everyone on the island would make fun of her and when the bargaining was happening, they said that she is only worth three cows. Until Jonny showed up with eight cows and for Mahana as his wife. In the beginning everyone thought that she was ugly and that no one would marry her, until she got a perfect guy that believed in her. After she finally comes out of hiding, most people say that she was worth 10 cows not even 8, after they say her real beauty. From SI, thought and meaning were a big thing to me on this. Everyone thought so many things that she even got someone to marry her, and then the eight cows meant a lot to her and proved to everyone else that she was worth it.

The girl's view of herself changed as her surroundings changed. Her dad was always putting her down, so she viewed herself through his eyes and felt that she was not good enough. This was reinforced by the generalized other of society mocking her throughout her life for being the way that she was. However, when her husband came into her life he treated her like a princess and her self view changed.

I believe this clip is an example of symbolic interactionism. This theory states that individual identity and social being is created through interaction with others and that is what is occurring with Mahana. Because of the actions and words of others, her social reality is being created. The people in her community are creating a reality for her every time they interact with her, for example, calling her ugly and “stone faced.” Because we are not born with a sense of self, Mahana’s only thinks about herself the way others see her, which corresponds with the “looking-glass-self" idea. Her idea of herself however changes when Johnny comes into the picture, changing her reality.

The short Johnny Lingo clip had the theme of Symbolic Interactionism throughout. In a scene from the film, Mohana has isolated herself from society and cries, “Did you hear them, they laughed, they mocked me, you will see he will not come’’. She says this because she has received negativity in all forms from her community which then has resulted in her self discouragement and lack of normalcy. In addition, Mohana's ‘Looking Glass Self’ and her ‘Generalized Other’ is shifted. These examples support the pillar idea in Symbolic Interactionism that collectively as society we are responsible for each others sense of self.

This clip of this movie is a primarily what we see of symbolic interaction. The reason I do believe this is due to a couple things. SI is simple stating that the individual identity of a person is created through all interaction with other individuals. That is exactly what it is happening with Mhana in this clip. Due to the use of actions and terms they use going back and forth with conversations. You see that Mahana only really cares about herself or as we see it used "looking-glass-self" concept or idea.

His daughter is in hiding but can over hear their conversation. The father says something along the lines of himself willing to pay a cow to have her taken off of his hands. This is an example of how SI says that people form opinions about themselves based on how other people respond to them. So Mahana thinks of herself as being ugly and hides away from everyone until Johnny makes her feel beautiful.

The movie clip is a good example of symbolic interactionism. At the beginning of the clip, people in the village talk down on Mahana, saying that’s she is ugly and not worth the man that was bargaining for her. The people in the town would talk down on her saying that she was worth less than three cows. The reason why, Mahana has low self esteem, according to symbolic interactionism, is because the people around her treat her poorly and so she develops a poor self concept. However, Johnny Lingo values Mahana and pays a very high price for her. He treats her well and as a result, Mahana’s self concept improves. Additionally, the people in the village as well as Mahana’s dad begin to see Mahana as valuable as well, which is an example of coordinated management of meaning.

Johnny Lingo presents a viewpoint different than that of the village who have come to recognize her "with a face of stone". This viewpoint is symbolic of the fact that each opinion is different because each reality we create is different. Lingo represented his thoughts on Mahana while his helper was symbolic of the village's collective opinion of Mahana.

The primary theory present and active in the Johnny Lingo clip was that of Symbolic internationalism. Symbolic interactionalism was demonstrated in various way especially in regards to the character of Mohana. For example, due to the fact that since the whole village refers to her as homely, and a girl not worth a 'three legged cow', she has created an understanding of herself via the view of others (aka the looking glass phenomenon). It's also worth mentioning the value and importance of a cow - a domesticated animal - is equivalent to that of a women. This is a reflection of symbolic meaning via cultural standards.

The Johnny Lingo movie clip illustrated the idea that one's reality is constructed by their interactions with others and the clip plays off of the key concept of community and the looking-glass self regarding symbolic interaction. Moana believed that Johnny Lingo would not come with the cows because of other peoples reactions to his offer and after hearing from multiple different people that she was not worthy, was "ugly", and many more cruel things. After hearing this and looking at the other people in her lives, she constructed a self of self completed composed of others thought, and she became the image of these thoughts.

Mahana's father, and all there other men, are constantly portraying this image of her and what they think she is. She is perceived as slow witted and unattractive by the others around her. At first everyone was disgusted by her and laughed at her, even her father. She was well aware, that's why she was standoffish and hiding in the vines. Until her husband comes along and changes everyone's opinion by offering her eight cows (normally 2-3 would suffice for an average wife, 4-5 cows would ensure an above average wife, but 8 cows were unheard of). Once he arrived with the 8 cows you see Mohans demeanor change, she becomes more confident and happy.

Mohana originally believes she is not worth anything because she had people like her father and the suitors saying she wasn't worth anything.

This short video clip resembles social interaction deeply. I closely related the themes of the clip to that of the short story we read in class, "Cipher in the Snow." This film represents SI through the young girl, Mahana who is to be married off to Johnny Lingo. She is seen by the whole village as a nobody. One storekeeper refereed to her as "the little shadow that comes in once in a while for a spool of thread." Even her own father called her a "homely daughter" that he wants taken off his hands. From those perceptions of others, Mahana believes all those things about herself. Once Johnny Lingo changes her perceptions, she changes her attitude at the end of the clip.

The scene where she is crying in the trees proves that she is very upset and doesn't think she is beautiful when she is. Because she feels so poorly about herself, it proves that people have the affect to break someone down. Another interesting part was when the two mean were engaging and they said that Mohana looked like "She has missed too many meals". I implied that he is making a negative comment to talk down Mohana. In today's world girls would take that as a compliment because they would imply that they are "skinny".
