Fans of the NBA believe that the Commissioner at the time, David Stern, rigged the Draft so that New York would get the First Round Pick. At the time, New York was in need for a powerful center, and Patrick Ewing was seen as the best player, if not, the best center in the draft class.

People have speculated that David Stern was wearing X-Ray glasses which would reveal him the envelope that contained the Knicks logo. While others believed that they put the Knicks Envelope on dry ice so when Stern would reach in, he would feel around for the cold envelope. An added theory was that, when the envelopes were dropped in, one of them were banged on which caused a crease so Stern could identify the correct envelope to select.

Why Rig The Draft?

The reason why was because the NBA wanted a good team in NY; the first pick would supply them of that. They were also having big problems such as a lower attendance, MJ wasn't the 6x Champion yet, reportedly, The LA Times stated that 75% of the players were on drugs in 1982. And the NBA almost had to disband 6 teams. So sending a big name to a smaller team would financially hurt the NBA.

Jack Krumpe was the President of the Madison Square Garden which was owned by Gulf & Western. Jack Krumpe told to reporter Harvey Araton "I told them how to fix it 60 days ago. You call up Ernst & Whinney and say, if we don't get Ewing, you're fired." E&W was an international accounting firm which were to operate this years lottery. The league allegedly told E&W that if the Knicks didn't get the first round pick, they were fired because E&W also did the accounting for G&W, owners of the Knicks. So people believed that the lottery was rigged because shady stuff was already occurring.

It's been 35 years since the draft lottery, this conspiracy theory isn't relevant in the slightest because there are more interesting theories such as the Morris Twins conspiracy theory. This old conspiracy has impacted NBA fans because now more and more fans talk about the NBA is rigged. More recently, "fans," have been discrediting the Lakers 17th championship by disrespectfully using Kobe Bryant's death as the reason why the Lakers won the ring this year.
