Dear Dzam, you will never truly know how must inspiration you have sparked in the lives of others. We rarely exchanged words, but one thing I am certain about is that Teach For Malaysia changed the trajectory of my life. Thank you for being the biggest enabler of this mission to Malaysia! Thank you for all the small and big moments that you were there to witness our growth together as a collective or as individuals.

Did you know? It was partially the presence of that balcony garden in the TFM Office (I came to visit in my first year of fellowship, and was completely blown away by the effort and sheer love that helped transform that balcony) that pushed me to believe that change was truly possible.

Thank you for visiting us East Fellows in Sarawak and agreeing to visit my students' in their longhouse (Rumah Ramba, Lepong Ajai) in 2016! Thank you for running the CLT session for TFM Alumni in 2019 too. I hope you keep finding ways to improve yourself and inspire others in the process !

Dear Dzam, noone in my family or myself could have imagined the path I am in now, and I am eternally grateful that you took the courageous leap into the unknown bearing fruit to the TFM of today where I happened to benefit immensely from. You fought hard inspiring the nation and sent an army of champions creating change downwards, upwards and horizontally to build towards an education system that is equitable for all children here. It is humbling to see you take the time to also build a family and be human amidst the huge responsibility you seem to shoulder for the country. I remember fearing you the first time I met you back in 2015. I felt that you were so capable, and I felt so intimidated by you.

Then when I became an LDO and joined the conscious leadership retreat facilitated by you back in 2018, that was when everything changed.

I remember having lunch with you because we made it to the bottom of each other's list. HAHA That lunch was truly memorable, Dzam. I will never forget that! It was when I realized that you have such a tender heart. Your vulnerability and authenticity when you opened up yourself made a deep impact in my life.

Thank you for leading by example, Dzam! Even though we don't get to work very closely with each other, the way you listen, empathize, open-up, hold space for people at MMM or any meeting has truly taught me a different meaning of leadership!

I remember my first team meeting where you had projected on the screen my facebook and twitter pages to 'verify' my identity and to the times where my mum threatened to "bagi penumbuk dekat dzam". Few weeks ago, I was planning a descriptive writing lesson weeks ago with my Form 4 kids about a role model. In order for me to model the brainstorming, I used my own role model, which is you! I told my kids that, if Mr Dzameer didn't start TFM, you will not see me standing here in front of you today. My kids were amazed at how selfless and resilient you are, from starting TFM and bringing impacts to different sectors, tackling different faces of education inequity.

In 2014, barely 2 months into working with the org, I toilet-papered your car and pasted memes of you all over the office with Kin Lam, Karthik '12 and other staff members in conjunction with your birthday that year. Thank you for not firing me and letting me keep my job for the last 6 years! :P

On a more serious note, thank YOUUUUU for starting a movement that changes the lives of many across the country! TFM has changed not only lives of the children we serve, but the lives of EVERYONE in the movement - and it certainly did change mine for having been a part of TFM since my campus leader days.

Hi Dzam! I may not have a lot of interactions with you be it as a fellow or as a staff. But all interactions that we had are all meaningful to me. One interaction that I still remember till now was Dragon's Den in 2017 somewhere in Nusajaya, Johor. I was in my first year of fellowship totally inspired by the 2016 fellows who pitched their initiatives. I thought that was already made my day. Then you saw me standing outside and I remember I told you how these senior fellows really inspired me to go big for my initiative. And you told me that initiatives dont have to be big. It can be small but still impactful, purposeful and meaningful. I guess, after 3 years, I came to realize that, as an LDO, that is how I coach fellows now. How we can just start with something small. Work on it, own it, then let it slowly grow. Reflecting on my journey in TFM, my small gamelan group has travelled to many places outside school. My simple worksheet idea in classroom has been passed to many fellows and teachers who now have more creative ways to create it. My 'start from small' approach as a coach has (perhaps) inspired many fellows to create their own 'start from small' ideas in both outside and inside of the classroom. Thank you for your work. When I first signed up to be a Fellow and later as staff, I did everything in my power to avoid you.
The following I've done when I saw you:
1. Turn around
2. Put head down and pray I've a book/phone so I can pretend like I'm doing something
3. Silently go, 'Oh no! He's coming, he's coming. What do I do? Gah! There's nowhere to hide. I hope he doesn't see me. Lord, I promise to be a better Catholic if you make me disappear now!'
4. Smile and walk away quickly leaving no room for exchange..and then breathe a sigh of relief, and immediately start plotting schemes so that I don't find myself in a similar situation again

I'm happy to report that I no longer try to avoid you and these days, welcome chats. I feel like I've seen variations of you from the time I was a Fellow up till now and am quite in awe of how all that transformation has taken place. You have plenty to be proud of and I do hope you give yourself many pats on the back. I wonder if you kept a journal for each year? You could totally publish it! What a story it is!

Thank you for contributing your heart and brain to the organization and movement at large. We're for the better because of it.

I still remember my first meeting with you on my first month with TFM. I will always remember your first lesson(s) to me on how to write surat rasmi to MOE. As garang as you were masa tu (and yeah I got so scared of you that I cried at one point at the thought of meeting you 😂), I learned a lot from you ever since!

Terima kasih for all the times you taught me (not just on the letters) and lead PD Gov and ER team in times of need. It was an honor to restart TFM Week under your guidance. Terima kasih for all the times that you always randomly come over to our table to join in our chat and shared your dad jokes with us (dah lama dah you prep yourself to be a dad and I believe you are an amazing one now!). Rachel: I still remember that first time I met you in Bangsar as my Otak-Otak mentor, even then taking time out for a bright eyed, naive undergraduate - I don't remember the contents of our conversation but I remember thinking about it when it came time to decide on my next step post university. The one thing I applied for was the TFM Fellowship and it was a no-brainer. Dear Dzam,

As I sat down to write this, I wondered to myself: what could possibly sum up your contributions to TFM and beyond in the past 10 years?

There were too many moments that passed, yet one stood out more than most: the time we first met, during my Assessment Centre in July 2011.

Back then, I was a disillusioned legal practitioner looking for a change, yet uncertainty clutched at my insides as I entered the doors of Mercu UEM, not knowing what a prospective career change would bring.

That was when you sat down at the table I and a few other candidates were waiting at, with a quick, "Hi, I'm Dzam. How are you guys?" (or something to that effect.)

It was in that casual moment of conversation that I started to relax, and we started to open up and enjoy the day, long as it was. Only later was I informed that Dzam was the CEO, and my reaction was, "Wow, in this organization, the CEO sits down with us to have a chat, with no pretensions!"

That was what drew me to TFM: the camaraderie and togetherness in exploring our unique talents to create a better world. You were the catalyst for that, and almost 10 years later, as I look back on a long and fulfilling career in education, I realize that, if nothing else, I have you to thank for that.

Thank you for reaching out to put together this community of incredible, purposeful and dedicated individuals. Thank you for inspiring us to be the best we can be, for ourselves and for the kids. And thank you for starting something that, in no small way, has changed the world. We'll miss you, your contributions - and the Raya Open Houses which you so generously organized, and from which the picture below was taken in 2016. May you find happiness with your new family as you venture into a renewed world.

Hello Dzam!

Joining TFM has changed my life forever, thank you so much for making this possible! I do not have a lot of interactions with you (mainly cause I get so scared around you), but there is one memory that I will never forget (that I have not told ANYONE about):

The 2016 cohort was cut in half and everyone was very upset. We were gathered at the old TFM office and I didn't know who was who back then. I just knew that you were sitting there in your bright red TFM tshirt and sport shoes, and letting the TA team explain the current situation to us.. Then, you only spoke up when the TA team opened up the space for questions and comments. You empathised and made us feel a bit better with your kind words. I was thinking to myself "wah, so nice ah, this org lets everyone talk, even the intern!". Yes, I thought you were an intern that time....... I am sorry for that mistake, I should have researched who the CEO of TFM was at that time...

But after I found that you are the CEO, that interaction taught me the two of the first leadership truths which are:
1. Being a leader is not always about speaking first/controlling the situation yourself. Letting your team have a chance to manage and speak is a sign of trust, and a push to grow...
2. Being able to empathise with people is a really important skill. It makes people feel heard and appreciated.

So you were already showing me what it means to be a leader even if we have not interacted before. And I really want to thank you for that.. :)

I wish you all the best in your future, go forth and inspire more young people to work hard for a better world, a better self! But please don't scare them, you have a really intense aura..

Thank you for ‘birthing’ TFM and for being a very supportive leader and friend.

Thank you for the sincere encouragement you gave right at the start, that led to one of the most meaningful (scariest) decisions in my life - shipping home a decades’ worth of beloved life from London to move back to Malaysia specifically for the TFM fellowship (and stil hereee).

You were also there (see photo below from Kem SKORlah - moments before that smiley face I was super sedih + penat + marah) to listen and support when I almost didn’t make it through at the end of PSP as I suffered from the reverse culture shock 👻

I’ve learned to become a much better person and able to dedicate my love and skills where it’s needed in our country through the fellowship. Good education for all is where it matters. Seeing is believing.

Only Allah truly knows every drop of blood, sweat and tears you’ve poured into TFM and may He abundantly reward you with all the barakah in this life and next.

I’m very excited for what lies ahead for you and your fam!

Dear Dzam,
It’s sad to see you go and it’s sadder we’ve never even had a proper conversation together. To be honest, yes I’m still intimidated by you hence why I can’t make eye contact hahahah but that intimidation comes from a place of utmost respect. I remember you randomly asking if I was okay when I was having coffee alone downstairs. Not being used to a work culture where the big boss tries to make talk with us minions, I was taken aback and was like super terharu because it shows you care for every single staff member. So thank you for that.

Being in TFM has taught me a lot of new things about the world, and about how it’s possible to love your job. I’m sure you being our #1 Person for 10 years have a lot to do with that. Thank you for instilling the culture, and don’t worry we’ll make sure it stays on its course.

Dzam,

You have completely changed what a leader and boss looks like in my eyes, through how you've led TFM these past years.

I appreciate that you started a culture at TFM where vulnerability and transparency are actively practised. It's truly awesome how you have been intentional in sharing updates, challenges, and even just personal reflections through some challenging times. Also, though it may never be perfect, I've come to realise that I do think of TFM as the greatest place to work.

Through the years I've been at TFM, I've come to admire you most for the humility with which you approach topics which are unfamiliar or uncomfortable to you, and the sincerity with which you respond to them. There was one particular e-mail you wrote on the new harassment policy that, upon reading it, made me feel like you truly took the time to understand an issue despite potentially never having experienced it before and empathising deeply. I think that this empathy and humility is so rare, and I was and am so grateful for that. This is what I'll remember and always respect you for.

We've not worked together much, but I appreciated the attention and interest you have put into Marketing's work, by sharing thoughts and interesting articles on our Slack channel. From your lunches with interns, incoming Fellows, and attempts at desk chats with staff, I can see that you've always tried to stay connected to the different parts of the movement and have always shown interest in each individual.

Lastly, thank you for being the person who had an idea and who decided to make it happen instead of waiting around for someone else to. TFM, Malaysia, and the lives of so many of us have been enriched through your leadership.

Thank YOU so much for being a great manager, boss, mentor for the past 8 years. Hey Dzam, when I think of you, I'll not only remember the wacky/ colourful socks that you used to wear to the office, but also the consistency of your leadership for the organisation. Hey Dzam, thank you for being an amazing leader who has shown us true authenticity and that it's always about a journey of constantly growing.

My favorite memory of you was in 2015 when I was a LDO and you came to support with all the "letters" we got. You reminded me what my core job was, to develop Fellows, and it helped me reground on what this work is really about.

Thank you also for stepping in to support with facilitating the conscious leadership retreat when I needed to take some time off and thank you for always caring for us professionally and also personally.

Dear Dzam, thank you for having crazy high SOPO and starting TFM. It didn't really strike me how monumental your action of starting TFM was, until I really took the time to look beyond all those numbers and really saw all the hundreds of Fellows and staff whose lives you have touched and life trajectories you have changed (like mine) and students whose education and lives those Fellows have impacted, through your one action of starting TFM.

You've taught me a lot and modelled for me what it means to be a leader, namely how to be vulnerable and transparent, and to rely on the strengths of the people around us. And when it comes to MOE, of course the other two most important things that you taught me indirectly: resilience and adapative leadership.

Thanks for all the quick (but probably safe) drives, the feedback on the many slides and letters, the meal at Chocha, and for never giving up and inspiring the team (tho I know you hate inspiring people) to never give up despite whatever our detractors throw at us.

I also really appreciate you taking the time out of your very busy schedule to coach the ER Associates through CLT last year. That framework really helped me come to terms with certain things and really imagine my alternative future and to try and live into my peace, power and purpose.

Thanks for everything, Dzam. This photo is from 9 July when we first got the Phase 3 approval from KSU. May your future undertakings bring many more successes and celebrations that will give you the sense of joy and accomplishment as that meeting gave us. :)

Hey Dzam,

Where do I even begin or end. It must be a very emotionally loaded day like the one I experienced before, but I can imagine it must be even heavier for you. This is the place where we grew the most and fell the hardest. Laughed and cried many times, and often simultaneously.

Leaving it behind must feel like leaving behind a big part of you. But, I'm sure the future is bright, as you have left behind a capable team and you're venturing into a new chapter that is filled with new mistakes you can make and grow from, in personal life and in your career.

I think there would be no external validations that will make you wonder "have I done enough?" Have you? I think you have, and you're just starting.

I'm not crying, you are.

When I found out that you're leaving... Can't help it but kept thinking of how you did YMCA with us during Institute and how you interviewed me, inspiring me and shaping me into who I am today. Your words in the emails you've been sending us helped me through times I felt burned out throughout these years. Those who can, remember Dzam! One of the awesome co-founders. I'll really miss you!

I must say that your initiative and leadership has changed all our lives, for the better. Thank you for creating this space for us to work towards empowering our community, and to get to know each other. If it not for you, all of us would not be in the path, together!

You are my model of leadership - courageous, resilient and such a visionary too. You are not afraid to just take a leap of faith, and I hope the rest of us will be able to follow that lead!

I recognise the confidence and courage I have to lead my own passion projects, is due to the encouragement and inspiration I had received directly from this movement. I will always remember, that it may be awkward or difficult to start something new, to start the movement, but eventually more and more people will join the man on the hill. I always admire you for what you described as "naivety" that eventually gave birth to gifts of us being together, do something bold, and challenging the norms. I am humbled to journey alongside you for close to a decade, and witnessing each other's "highs and lows" (LOLz). We've gone through so many emotional outbreak (at each other) and countless joyous celebrations together; we also made mistakes, we laughed at ourselves, and we cheered each other on when things get hard. I'll forever remember you for those long voice message detailing your medical procedure, your child-like wonder, weird email format and that smirk when you know you are right :)

Thank you for the best lie ever close to a decade ago: "Join TFM for two months~" and now I have a lifetime of connections with a community I love. I am eternally grateful for your open-heartedness and generosity towards me. Much love to you as you move into a new chapter!

I still remember all those years ago when I was a student in Imperial and you came to the lecture hall in our uni to introduce what tfm is about and your plans for it (you were still recruiting the first cohort then) We doubted it at first but look how far it has grown since then. Thank you for connecting me with some friends for life and the 2 years experience has definitely changed my trajectory of life, if not the kids. I would probably not consider teaching as my career choice had I not gone through it and found it to be so meaningful. Despite all the challenges the org faces, it has also spur on so many movement in the education sector, innovation in education programs, open up opprtunities for some of the kids and grown several leaders. And I have it at the core of my heart it should always be #forthekids Thank you for dreaming, building it up and making TFM a reality.

Dear Dzam,

Whenever someone says that a teacher can change the life of a student just by believing in his/her potential, I think of you. That is what you've been to me.

I've said this so, so many times, but so much of my growth has been attributed to you. I am deeply grateful for the patience, grace, desire and commitment you have shown to coaching and mentoring me. It is your belief and faith in me that has allowed me to flourish so much.

I want you to know that you SHOULD pick up coaching, because you will make a vast difference in the lives of many people down the road, and I hope they have the privilege of experiencing what you have given to people in the TFM movement.

You've impacted my life in so many ways there really aren't words. The Teach for Malaysia movement put me on a path that I never expected my life to take, and it has opened so very many doors since. It has been such a privilege to know you and to have been personally mentored in some way by you. You've shaped my work ethic, stretched my thinking, and pushed me to achieve things I've thought were too hard. I'll admit I've cried a few times in the office toilet after one intense check-in or another, but I know you've always had my back. You inspire people to want to do better because you lead by example. Today, as I run life aspiration sessions with students, I often talk about my experience with you. LOOK AT THIS PADLET! You have touched so many lives and made such a huge impact just by kicking off that crazy idea 10 years ago.

Whether you know it or not, you have played such a huge role in both Tharma's and I journey in Undi 18. You did it just by refusing to endorse us on social media unless we answered your question, "How long are you willing to push this for?"

THANK YOU, for starting this movement. For setting an example. And on a personal level, for not cutting me any slack and calling out on my bullshit. You are one of the few people I admire AND respect and its incredible to have seen you work over the past few years.
