I am with Geoff in agreeing and disagreeing with Lisa's norm of math being about learning and not performing. It's idealistic to think that learning is the only thing that matters because at the end of the day, we need to be able to evaluate how much of the curriculum is has been learned and part of that is application (performative). It's great to understand a concept, but you still have to SHOW what you've learned and apply it (PERFORMATIVE). So yes, math is about learning, but it is also about performing.
- Blossom

I agree with everyone that questions are vital as they help to clarify concepts, therefore enhance understanding. Just like Jasmine, I always say that there is no such thing as a dumb question. It is better to ask than to not know.

- Inderjit

Make room for mistakes!

I agree with everyone that mistakes allow for deeper understanding because we get to wrestle with the task at hand until we get it right -persevere. We feel proud and accomplished when we finally figure it out and we may find relationships from the concept to other math concepts. With my students, I tell them that everyone makes mistakes, even teachers (since they have this preconceived notion that we know everything and cannot make errors, otherwise "How are you even a teacher?" questions come about). I purposely make errors waiting for my students to point it out and explain to me why it was an error and how it should be fixed. I try to show them that it is okay, as we all hope to learn from the mistakes.

- Inderjit
