Topic 1: What is science and how it works?

Before taking this course, I had always loved science but always had a few questions about some of the information I learned in school, and so much information on science has changed from when I was in school. During module 1, in reading the article "Why Science," I feel that my thinking has changed by understanding more of the information of science and the skills you can use to help build your knowledge. I will continue to grow in learning more about science and the different ways to process the information to feel confident when teaching students.

Topic 2: How does the scientific method relate to scientific inquiry and how does inquiry-based learning impact students' learning?

When starting this course, I did not know there were two ways for the scientific processes: the scientific method and scientific inquiry; the only thing I remember in school that we were taught was the scientific method. Module 1 was where I received the information on the two processes and that they may be different in little ways, one is a step-by-step process, and the other is creative thinking, but in the end, you still find the answer to your question. I think that inquiry-based learning can have a major impact on letting students think out of the box, which will then make them more creative and help them stay interested in learning.

Topic 3: The Characteristics of life and what it means to be alive.

Before NS 100, I did not think there were so many characteristics of life; I knew the basics like growing and reproducing. But while taking this course, I learned in module 2 that there are many different characteristics of life and how each of them can increase population and help with adaptation. I will continue to grow by staying up to date on information on the characteristics of life and make sure that I use it in my classroom.

Topic 4: How do microscopic changes have macroscopic effects?

Before taking NS100, I did not know the meaning of macroscopic effects; the only word I knew was a microscope. I just discovered that you could add effects to the item you are looking at under the microscope, which can change the item's shape and size. Macroscopic happens when the temperature of the object increases, then the atoms start to vibrate more, which will then expand the item into changing sizes. I will continue to grow in understanding that any item can change with the different effects of a macroscopic.

Topic 5: How your scientific perspective has changed since the beginning of the semester?

Before taking this science course, I did not think I would enjoy some of the modules, but after reading some of the articles and watching the videos, it has really gotten my attention to enjoying what we are learning. I really think it is exciting how there are two different scientific processes that can help students process information in different ways so they can obtain the information and learn how to use it in life. I will continue to grow in my knowledge of science by observing science teachers and continuing to read information on the latest things in science.

Topic 6: How does your experience with NS 100 relate to your apprenticeship in the classroom?

When starting the Reach program, I was very nervous and worried about whether I would understand the information and succeed. But this course has shown me that I can do it if I work hard and stay focused. This course taught me to stay positive and think with a growth mindset. As I continue to take this course I want to expand my knowledge and become a great educator.
