Bute disaster struck, she forgot the lyrics to our beautiful anthem. So Mr. Cheeks swoop in and started to sing her way through the anthem, the real danger is Mo can't really sing he could have been ridiculed, so he weighted ite his head he would save her from a super lifetime of embarrassment bute he saved her and slowly sung ite.

The story changer stepping up text evidence:
"Erik opened his eyes wide in mock terror. He turned to Arthur and said, “We may have a situation here, Bauer.” The others in the group seemed amused. Arthur started to walk slowly west. His hand fumbled inside his gym bag. Luis continued in a loud voice, “I think you are. But I think you are not a man enough to say so.” An “Ooohhh” sound rose up from the group. Erik just smiled and met Luis’s stare. Luis held his long arms out and extended his palms. “You would smack a little kid in the face, right? Why don’t you come over here and try to smack me?” The “Ooohhh” grew louder. Arthur Bauer was still walking forward, with his head down, but Luis was paying no attention to him. He called out again, “Come on! Why don’t you try to smack me!” Arthur reached Luis, turned, and whipped the blackjack around with a loud whack against the side of Luis’s head. Luis’s arms shot up to cover his head as he staggered to the right and fell on one knee. Arthur stuck the blackjack back into his gym bag and continued walking, as if nothing had happened. Erik walked quietly past Luis. He explained, for the benefit of his group, “Arthur takes care of all my light work.” Erik and the rest of them caught up with Arthur at the gate. I could see that they were laughing.?

Dog poop initiativeThe Dog poop initiative is where a single man had the courage to step up and clean the dog poo on his son's soccer field. This was not some run of the mill poo , it had been avoided and complained about since daybreak. Nobody was willing to scoop that poop, until the author came. The soccer players had a savior, somone that scooped the pool. And then the soccer players played to their fullest ability note having to worry about that awful poo. He make the acrim that the pople that don't steep up are the complainers, they talk about a problem bute do nothing, then there are the scoopers who will step up and face a challenge head on like, the poo panasko of 2002!

His mom does not want him to join the navy because their dad was killed at Pearl Harbor. [They used to live there.] So Adam devises a plan. He goes to his grandpa's house, where his grandpa signs his papers to join the marines not knowing about his mom’s disapproval. So Adam is on his way to the Marines. First, he needs to go to Navy boot camp. There he meets his best friend, Ben. Here he is really hardened into a fierce soldier through torturous exercises at the camp. After a couple of months of army boot camp he's shipped to war. By the time he gets to the island in Japan it's 1945, the peak of WW2. There he joins a platoon and starts the fight. He fights for 10 days and then takes a break from action. At base he meets up with Ben, but is injured by a shell and Ben is killed. He goes to Hawaii for long term care where he meets up with his old buddies from when he used to live there. He remembers a painful memory there, he and his buddies were in a boat when pearl harbor was attacked. A torpedo nearly killed them all!

The main problem in the story is really just WWII, when Adam first starts out he doesn't know where he's fighting, he just thinks he's fighting a war against the enemy. The enemy is really the axis powers. He is just told just to shoot the enemy. He is platooned on a small island battling the Japanese. I'm pretty sure these islands were the Tinian Island because after the allies took control and Adam left, an atomic bomb was dropped over Hiroshima. I found that America needed an island to launch a bomber plane to drop the bomb. They needed to siege this island to end the war, so Adam and the army came to take the island. When he gets there he is immediately put on the front lines. This is called trench warfare, they dig really tiny holes and take cover from shooters and bombs. So he and Tex are together most of the time. It takes about 10 days for them to defeat all Japanese foes in the island. Most of the time they found them in caves, easily cornered, and Tex comes really close to some of the bunkers and throws grenades into the bunkers. Adam helps Tex and they slowly overtake the caves. The climax of the story is when a shell land near Adam and Ben, killing Adam’s best friend, Ben, and injuring Adam’s leg with shrapnel. This is resolved when Adam gets treated and transferred to a hospital in Hawaii for long term care. He then meets up with childhood friends there and he goes to where his dad died and he hangs out with his buddies!

Film version; the book is a little different than the film, such as: Hannah Stern is a like 25-year-old (at least) Jewish girl living in the present day (time of publication: 1980s). She is bored by her relatives' stories about the past, is not looking forward to the Passover Seder, and is tired of her religion. When Hannah symbolically opens the door for the prophet Elijah, she is transported back in time to 1942 Poland, during World War II. At that time and place, the people believe she is Chaya Abramowicz, who is recovering from cholera, the fever that killed Chaya's parents a few months ago. The strange remarks Hannah/Chaya makes about the future and her inability to recognize her "aunt" Gitl and "uncle" Shmuel are blamed on the fever.

At her "uncle's" wedding, the Nazis come to transport the entire population of the village to a concentration camp near Donavin, and only Hannah knows all the terrors they will face: starvation, mistreatment, forced labor, and finally execution. She struggles to survive at the camp, with the help of a girl named Rivka. Uncle Shmuel and some other men try to escape; the men are caught. Fayge, who was going to be married to Shmuel, is killed because she runs to Shmuel when he is about to be shot with the men that were caught. Yitzchak escaped and lived in the forest with the partisans, fighting the Germans.

Later, when Hannah, Rivka, Esther, and Shifre are working, a guard overhears them talking instead of working. Shifre tries to reassure the guard they have been working, but he takes them anyway and leaves Hannah by herself. As the three are about to leave, Hannah takes Rivka's place by putting on her babushka. Since the guards don't know their faces, this goes unnoticed by the officer. The women are led to the gas chamber. She is then transported back to her family's Seder. Aunt Eva calls her over. Hannah looks at Aunt Eva's number; it is the same as Rivka's.

Hannah (when she was Chaya) was really the woman she was named after, Rivka was Aunt Eva, and Rivka's brother, Wolfe, was Grandpa Will. (Aunt Eva said that they changed their names when they got to America.)

The epilogue at the end of the novel reveals that when the camp was liberated, the survivors were Gitl (weighing a mere seventy-three pounds), Yitzchak, Rivka, and Leye (a worker in the camp) and her baby. Gitl and Yitzchak immigrate to Israel where Yitzchak becomes a politician while Gitl organizes a rescue mission that is dedicated to salvaging the lives of young survivors and locating family members. The organization is named after Chaya, her niece that died a hero.

References[edit]

Children and Young Adult Literature portal

Jump up^ "(Awards & Nominations)".

Before the beginning, when Paul Fisher is in kindergarten. One of Erik's friends calls Paul "Eclipse Boy". (Erik is Paul's brother) On Paul's first day of kindergarten, he is bullied by 5th graders about him being legally blind. At the beginning of the novel and Erik doesn't defend him letting him get teased.Next, Erik and Paul move houses, with their parents, from Houston, Texas to Lake Windsor Downs in rural Tangerine, Florida. Erik, the older son, looks forward to a football scholarship at the university of his choice. Paul, the younger son, is visually impaired and considered blind, but plays soccer. His family credits his visual injury to a solar eclipse, which he does not remember. Soon after they unpack, Paul goes for a tour of his new school, where characters Mike Costello and his brother Joey are introduced. One day at football practice, Mike Costello is killed by lightning; whereupon Erik and his friend Arthur Bauer tell jokes after hearing the news, even though Mike was one of their teammates. On his first day of school, Paul meets Coach Walski, the coach of the soccer team, and tries out for the team, but is later told that his visual impairment prevents his eligibility, and blames this on his mother's revelation of the impairment to the school administrators.

While Paul is at school, a field of portable classrooms collapses into a sinkhole. Many people, including Paul and Joey, try to rescue those trapped, and no one is seriously injured. The emergency relocation plan gives the students the choice to stay at Lake Windsor, their present school, with a different schedule and more crowded classes, or to transfer to Tangerine Middle School, on the other, poorer side of the county; and Paul chooses Tangerine Middle, to play soccer again. When he arrives at Tangerine Middle School, he is shown around by a girl named Theresa. At lunch, Paul asks Theresa about the soccer team. Theresa tells Paul that her brother, Tino, is a member. She brings Paul to a soccer meet after school and he joins. At first, Paul's teammates Victor, the team captain, and Tino hesitate to befriend him; but a victory in the first game of the season (against the aggressive Palmetto Whipoorwils. The whipporwills were pushing them around and calling them names, but the team acted as if they were used to it and just ignored him) convinces Victor to do so. Paul then persuades Joey Costello to join the school. After a quarrel with Paul, Joey returns to Lake Windsor. Throughout the story, houses in Paul's neighborhood are fumigated for termites many of the houses are robbed by Erik and his friend Arthur. A man named Luis is introduced as the older brother of Theresa and Tino. Luis works at his parents' citrus farm and is developing a new kind of tangerine called the Golden Dawn. While at Paul's house for a school project, Tino makes a comment about how Erik fell down while attempting to a kick an extra point during an earlier football game; and Erik slaps Tino. Luis goes to Erik's football practice to confront him with this; but Erik distracts him while signaling his friend Arthur to strike Luis from behind using a club, which is referred to as a "Blackjack" for the rest of the story. This is witnessed by Paul, and Luis is found dead six days later from an aneurysm. Arthur had hit Luis hard enough to cause the aneurysm to weaken, and eventually burst 6 days later. Paul is told by Theresa not to go to the funeral because he is Erik's brother, and he grieves alone.

On Senior Awards Night, Tino and Victor attack Erik and Arthur as revenge for killing Luis. The football coach restrains Tino, but Paul distracts him by jumping on his back, so that Tino and Victor can escape. Paul runs back to his house, where a confrontation with a furious Arthur and Erik causes Paul to finally fully recall the memory he had been repressing—after spray-painting a wall and wrongfully assuming that Paul had turned them in, Erik restrained Paul while Victor Castor (his lackey at the time, mirroring Erik's relationship with Arthur) sprayed paint into Paul's eyes as punishment. Paul confronts his parents about their concealment of the event. His mother cries and they admit to lying about the eclipse, stating that they were only trying to ensure that Paul never hated Erik. Paul's father finally breaks down as well when Paul questions whether they thought that would be better than Paul hating himself instead.

Later, Paul's mother discovers a gym bag in the Fishers' garage full of items that had gone missing from the tented houses in the neighborhood, and holds a meeting to reveal that Erik and Arthur are the cause of the missing items. Paul's father presents a restitution proposed by the sheriff, which, if signed by all the robbery victims, would result in all victims being compensated in exchange for Erik and Arthur not having charges pressed against them. Reluctantly, the victims agree. As they leave, they find the police, led to the house by Joey, waiting outside to arrest Erik and Arthur for the murder of Luis. Paul agrees to give the police a full statement.

Back at the school, Paul and his mother meet with the principal, who informs him that Tino and Victor have been suspended for three weeks for attacking a student. Since Paul attacked a staff member, he is expelled from all public schools in the county. As Paul and his mother leave the school, the kids outside express approval towards him for his actions defending Tino and Victor.

Paul is enrolled in private school, his only choice after his expulsion. Despite this setback, Paul resolves to continue playing for the War Eagles. The book ends with Paul being driven to his third school of the year by his father, thinking about Mike Costello and Luis and taking in the sight and smell of the orange groves.

Awards[edit]

Rebecca Caudill Young Reader's Book Award Nominee (2001)

South Carolina Book Award for Junior Book Award (2000)

Michigan Library Association Thumbs Up!
