When they tried, they found it was difficult to know what to highlight as they could not judge what "important" meant. With the directions altered to "look for details that a thief would find interesting," or "look for details that a real estate agent might find interesting," the task became easy. Students could quickly find relevant details. Lesson: know what the purpose is behind your reading. We then read and took notes on details that show what the early formation of the United States was like.
