I remember as a young girl in Kindergarten and First grade listening to books on tape and following along. When I would hear the beep, I knew to turn the page. I remember listening to Jack and the Beanstalk, as well as other fairy tales this way. I remember listening to books both at school and at home. I can remember my Kindergarten teacher sending me to the library during the day to listen to the different books on tape. I also remember my Grandma Gloria buying me the books on tape. I remember listening to stories over and over again. Through this process, I began to learn to read. I remember then visiting the school library and checking out books and being able to read them on my own.

My Grandma Gloria was the most supportive in my literacy development. She bought me books, books on tape, and read-aloud to me often. We lived with her when I was in second and third grade. I was in love with horses as a girl and I remember her reading horse stories to me, such as Black Beauty. I had several non-fiction horse books she had bought me and I would read them for hours.

I loved visiting the library in elementary school! I couldn't wait to go and get a new book every week! One of the earliest chapter books I remember reading was Charlotte's Web, in either first or second grade. I remember reading the book aloud to my mother at night time. I clearly remember my second grade teacher reading aloud How to Eat Fried Worms and looking forward to her reading a chapter or two a day. Toward my later elementary years, I remember reading Are You There God, It's Me Margaret with my friends. We would read and talk about it together. I also remember enjoying any horse stories, either fiction or non-fiction, and read The Black Stallion series books. I remember my Grandma Gloria taking me to see the movie when it came out too.

In my tween years, I started gravitating towards young romance books, such as Jacob Have I Loved. As I entered high school, I began to read books my mom read, such as the Flowers in the Attic series. I also remember reading Steven King books. I vividly remember reading Beowulf and the Scarlet Letter in high school. Reading for pleasure began to dwindle down as I read more and more textbooks for classes.

As a young adult, most of my reading centered on college courses. I do remember reading some of Steinbeck and continued reading Steven King books. Over the last couple of years, I have read lots of YA books, which has become one of my favorite genres. I have read books my teenage son has recommended, such as the Twilight, 5th Wave, The Hunger Games trilogy and Divergent series. I also share book with my mom and sister. We have similar reading styles, so I usually enjoy books they recommend. All three of us read the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series together.

As a second grade teacher, I am always looking for great picture-books and early chapter books to share with my students. This year my students have really enjoyed the Baby Mouse series, Magic Treehouse series, and Dog Man. Some of my favorite read-alouds are The Day the Crayons Quit, books by Patricia Polaccio, and any fairy tale. I also love sharing poems by Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky. The sillier the poem, the more the kids like it!
