Prompt: To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the most BANNED books of our time due in part to racist themes/language. Do you think it is necessary for the "n-word" to be included in the book? Why or why not? Explain your opinion.
Respond to the prompt using complete sentences. Then, respond to a minimum of three classmates posts (build off of what they said, ask a question, agree, disagree, or ask them to clarify, etc...).

I have mixed feelings about this topic. Nobody should say it but I think in this instance To Kill a Mockingbird should have it in their books. My reasoning behind this is that the n-word was prevalent in the South in the 1930's. When the n-word is shown in the book, it shows us what African Americans went through in the 1930's. It shows us the racism African Americans faced back then. If we were to erase that from the book. It would erase what Tom Robinson and others like him felt back then.

The word was used to disrespect people of color so i think the least other cultures and people can do is leave that slur alone.

I'd have to say yes. If we are gonna make a book about the past, and especially about when African Americans were mistreated. We have to show how it really was. We can;t be all holding the little kids hand when talking about history. It had to be show how cruel this word it. If we really wanna see the truth about how the past was. We have to write how it was. Even if its harsh. Because if we get offended by that. Then we are the ones who are too sensitive, because all its doing is showing us how they were treated back then and showing us their suffering and the racism that existed. For that reason I say that the book should keep the N-word. Its the readers choice to say it or not to say it, because we still do have that right to choose if we say the word or we don't.
