I think it can be argued that literature is translated differently by everyone. For some it is simply a manner of telling a story, fictional or not, through the means of writing. For others, it is a way of communicating messages and theories through a narrative which subverts the traditional way of doing so, for example through abstract poetry or song.

I find that literature refers to a piece of writing, but such which can be read or listened to. Literature can be translated in many ways to convey its meanings and ideas, such as adaptations to theatre. Literature can be both fiction and non-fiction, it is something that convey a message, a line of thought, a concept of something, and is essentially a token of human creativity.

I think literature is a form of art through writing, where the writer attempts to capture a feeling, place, person, time or experience, and express their emotions, opinions and perspectives. Literature is about using words and language creatively for a certain effect or purpose - to inform, provoke thought and reflection, teach a moral lesson, make a political point, help make sense of the world, or simply to relate to a reader and entertain them. Literature has traditionally been seen as novels or 'great works' by famous authors that have cultural significance, but I believe it should not be so narrowly defined. Any writing can be literature, and there is meaning and significance in all writing, even if only for the writer themself.

Literature could take the form of a book, essay or newspaper article, meaning it can be either fictional or non-fictional. There's usually the assumption that the works have taken much time and dedication to write, and sometimes that the author may have hidden a message within the writing. This contrasts with writing such as advertisements and blogs, which we don't usually associate with literature as they are less permanent and ground-breaking.

What is literature? How do you define literature and the literary? Can we say what is not literature? Are there texts which don't typically count as literature and whose status we might want to re-consider?

For instance, many of the works regarded as important literature are those by wealthy men, particularly when looking at older works. It would be worth re-considering, particularly older, works by lesser known writers, including women and those of poorer, and minority backgrounds or different cultures

Something which might contain intertextual or historique or formation references/nods to previous, famous works of art.

Dickens is literature. The instruction manual for your dishwasher is not literature. These are almost universal ideas, but there are many writers and genres of writing who sit in the middle. It is the usual canon-choosing crowd — which has typically been formed of white/straight/cis/rich men — who have often been entrusted with working out where to categorise them. That is unfair, and leads me to answer 'what is literature' thus: literature is a political commodity. And often an economic one.
