The brief supplied for unit 9 is very vague and free in terms of what we are allowed to create and investigate which is exciting and daunting. Initially i cast my mind back to unit 8 where we had to make an IPS presentation as to what we wanted to make and pursue in third year, in my video i discussed how i wanted to explore the relationship between the audience and the illustrator which still rings true, how do i do this? I also mentioned how everyday happenings and people fascinate me and are a large source of inspiration for me, so how do i go about using this as a starting point?

i started looking at images of people simply living their everyday lives and began to think about how peoples lives run parallel to one another but intersect for shared moments, for example when the bus is late and the people at the bus top are forced into a shared annoyance. I found this to be a rich starting point for my enquiry as it draws from my personal work and interests and allows me to build on it.

In this workshop we used texts which related to our topics of interest, I used a book called "when strangers meet" - by Kio Stark, we had to then go through the texts and interpret them in different creative ways, for example we made 'inventories' of them , we looked at how selecting different elements of the text to list can change the impact and meaning of the text.
In my inventories I noted down all of the emotions described which made the text appear very tender and sweet, where as in my second inventory I noted down each time the word stranger was used and the place they were in, this had a very different overall impact and read as somewhat threatening. It was an interesting notion to consider how perspective can change the output of an event, in relation to my topic it made me think about how when an event is witnessed by multiple people in public they each have a unique and personal perspective and account.

following this we were tasked with translating a poem written in Chinese to English without researching anything about the language or poet, I found this difficult although interesting to think about how each of us in the workshop had a different translation therefore a different understanding and experience of the text, applying this to my project is an interesting thought process as it suggests that each person has their own unique outlook and understanding of whats happening in the world (sonder)

we then had to develop what we had learned from the workshop and create a fully realised piece of illustration in an hour, I chose to build on the concept of each individual having their own outlook and understanding of the same situation and took inspiration from the people i could see standing at the train station from my window, i used tracing paper and drew some of the people i saw in the crowd and bound this into a small booklet, the tracing paper gave the illusion of the people all standing in a huddle in front of one another which mimicked the crowd i was observing. I do think my outcome was successful although i also think my text based outcomes earlier in the day were successful also and perhaps i could look more into how people use language and what it means.

In this workshop we were focussed on boiling our work down into simple forms and focussing on communication and interpretation, we looked into semiotics which describes the role of the author and audience, as well as how meaning is communicated through images and symbols. when thinking about my project in its most abstract form I realised that it centres entirely around peoples paths crossing and their lives intersecting for a period of time which allows these shared moments.

In order to make this visual I cut out some loose abstract shapes which I planned to overlap and intersect in order to communicate this idea of shared moments. After I printed these in a few different arrangements I chose to make some more linear shapes as this might better communicate the concept of paths crossing.

I found the theory of the workshop more interesting and valuable than the physical side as it allowed me to think in a simpler way and focus on communication however I feel my work excels when it is more figurative than the very abstract images I was producing in this workshop.

following the workshop i though about how i can integrate the use of text into my practice in this unit, i chose to begin by using the same method of recording information as we did in the workshop, I recorded the people i could see from my window at the train station, bus stop and taxi rank below my flat. i set a timer for one minute and had a break of 15 minutes in between each session, within the one minute timer i recorded all the people i could see in order to capture the atmosphere and all the different people who were in that space, I feel that these inventories allow the reader to see and imagine the area and the people in it.

In order to build off of what I did in the playing with text workshop and in the signs and meaning print workshop I wanted to record how people move through space, in this instance I was acting as a spectator and feel it is important to note that there would be a lot of difference in the outcome if I was a participant rather than a spectator.

I worked from the view from my window again as I feel this is a good space to observe people moving and interacting while being removed from them. I used cartridge paper and cut out the general shape of some of the people I could see from my window. I then arranged these to correspond with the people I was observing from my window and took a print, then moved the figures and printed again, therefore the prints I took ended up recording the movements of the crowd. These prints when flashed quickly after one another could work as an animation.
I like how in the prints the background is left very blurry and nondescript, allowing more focus to be drawn onto the figures in the prints.

Drawing from the workshops I've attended so far I have begun making some work that helps me explore my topic of interest while using the skills I've developed to aid my investigation. In my group tutorial, we discussed how illustration may be used as a tool to doccument people and record information as well as re-telling stories. to get a start on this I spent some time observing people and recording them through drawing, I experimented with a couple of mediums in order to play with the effect that they give me.

I then began thinking about what people have in common, what binds us together as a society. This led me to consider the concept of rituals and routines as this is something that everybody has to some extent and I began to think about the potential patterns in peoples routines. I created a survey that asks for an account of peoples daily activities, I posted it publicly in some social media groups and looked at the data and found there were certain activities that a lot of people took part in.

This exercise allowed me to understand others routines and lives on the day to day rather than just my own and those close to me.

Although I feel that this slightly deviates from my main focus and therefore isn't entirely relevant to my investigation.

In this workshop it encouraged me to use text in my work and think in more abstract terms about how meanings can be communicated to audiences.

Also to note I quite like the use of text as a form of illustration as well as using it in conjunction with image.

I want to use text more in my practice through this unit as I feel it can fill in areas of information which can be left through drawing. I also want to carry on working with the concepts of translation, perspective, and matter of fact writing.

In terms of theory I learned to work more abstractly and use shape and form for communication, as well as learning to work much more spontaneously which I think will apply nicely to my project as when working with people and public happenings the moments i'm trying to capture are fleeting.
Spontaneity is very important to my process as the chance encounters I am focussing my work around are fast and fleeting therefore creating images spontaneously and quickly will be integral to collecting information.

in order to get a greater understanding of what brings us together as people I wanted to know what people do in their day to day life and how similar we all are in our daily habits and rituals. To do this i created a poll on instagram asking people to suggest things they do on a daily basis, I then collated these into a checklist format and printed a stack of them, I then handed them out to people whenever possible and asked them to mark off every one they had done the day before.
I then plan to use the data to influence my practice

This workshop centred around language, we looked into the book 'exercises in style' and the concept of writing using oulipo rules, We were instructed that in this worksop our work should be exactly 100 words, and we should follow the routine of free writing then being selective and editing it down, then refining our work, all while being experimental with language.

Task one - first things.
we were instructed to write about our morning before the workshop.

Task two -
We had to write based on a found image of some kind and document our thoughts as we were looking at the image.

Task three -
We used one of our own made images and wrote about the process of making it, in terms of the setting, our thoughts, feelings etc.

TASK 1 - First things

My alarm screamed but failed to rouse me, it screamed again, I rolled over and chose to ignore it. Finally admitting defeat, I sat up in my bed cocooned in blankets but could still feel the chill from the open window on my face. I stood and made my way to the bathroom looking at the nest of hair that id crafted overnight. I brushed my teeth and washed my face in efforts to feel more alive, failed efforts might I add. I trudged to my desk, turning the heating on, and closing the window on the way. I reached for my laptop and fought to connect to the WIFI, it was a lengthy battle, but I was victorious. I daydreamed of how nice it would be to have a cup of tea; the kitchen is just too far away this morning. My attention turned to my phone, which was full of messages that I hadn't seen, and some which I had seen but chosen to overlook. I combed through them, replying with the appropriate responses. I thought of the imaginary cup of tea again, the kitchen is still too far. I check my emails, personal, work, uni: nothing exciting. I began hunting for the correct Moodle page, experience has shown me this isn't as easy as it seems, it takes time to master. I joined the workshop room, it's just me and Millie for now. As I wait, I glance up to the window, watch the cranes nod, and shake their heads, from here the work men look like insects, perhaps an ant colony building their nests.

Crowded tube compartment, all the seats are full people are spilling into the aisles. most people are keeping their eyes down, hands neatly folded in their laps or grasping onto the handrails, trying not to impose on one another. A lady sits upright in her chair, eyes shut, grasping a folded newspaper, where is she going? Has she been here before? What led her here? This is a selection of people who usually wouldn’t be grouped together, but here they are, same place same time. A couple in the center of the carriage embrace, as if they are the only people present. Their arms are tightly wound around one another, eyes shut tightly. The people around them don’t appear to notice, or they do notice but are giving them the illusion of privacy.

This workshop was fascinating as it allowed me to think so creatively while using language, it also made me think critically of my own work because of the limited word count. It made me consider what is important, what am I trying to capture and why. I would really like to use language in conjunction with images further in my work as I feel together they can tell a story beautifully. Particularly with my project as the moments I'm focussing on are so minute that they using language and images can help to fully immerse the audience in the moment as well as completely capturing the fleeting intimacies.

This workshop challenged me to think outside of my usual methods of making.
We were tasked with drawing a place which relates to our topic of choice. I chose the location of an underground platform as I have been reading about non places. We had to draw the location first from our imagination. Then we drew the location while using an image as a reference, I used the photos I took as part of my first hand research. Then we had to put these drawings and reference photos out of sight and draw them again from memory.

The next task was to create a model of the place we chose using paper and materials we had laying around, it was encouraged that we think in terms of shape and space rather than small details.
Then we used these models as references for the next drawings we did.

The next drawings we made were from using an eraser to draw using tone over a mid-tone graphite base.

These tasks made me think about drawing in a more physical way as in each study I was challenged with understanding the fundamentals, including tone, light, space.

This workshop prompted me to work with the people in the group and discuss our projects while offering constructive criticism. It also allowed us to build off of one another's ideas both visually and conceptually.

We had to then look at an album cover and as a group theorise about what had happened before and after the image. I liked the idea of playing with fictionalised context as when I was observing strangers as part of my method illustration task I would think about the 'backstories' of the people I saw.

we looked at this artist who handed out free food in a gallery space which encouraged people to sit and eat together and talk to one another. Eluding to the people interacting being the art. This type of event would be very useful for me to have as a research tool as it would allow me to record people interacting and gather a lot of material to work from.

through unit 9 I've been exploring methods of documenting real-life events through illustration, I've worked with drawing, writing, sound, poetry, animation and observation. From this, I've done some research into reportage and how it can capture the essence of a place. This is something I'm interested in pursuing in unit 10 as it is an exciting next step from the work I've been producing in years 2 and 3. The themes are place and people, movement through space as well as interaction and culture. To begin exploring this in more depth I've kept a sketchbook which is full of field drawings and annotations which I've made on location, most of the drawings are from the underground or London streets where I've been observing.

My visual language through this sketchbook is mainly sparse which is both a result of working on location, thus working quickly as well as being selective and critical of my work as I learned in the hundreds workshop. As well as drawing from my research into Non-places as part of my compendium research, the background is less important than the people who occupy it as it is their behaviour that projects the place onto the space.

Thinking in terms of the wider context, and applying my work to the real world I see potential in exploring reportage more and working as an investigator and an illustrator, as well as furthering my skills in animation and documentary drawing. I’m interested in the potential of exploring a postgraduate qualification at some point in the future but due to the financial burden of this, I would like to gain more industry experience before this in hopes of finding the avenue I would like to pursue in my working career. In unit 10 I’m excited to utilise the techniques of gathering information and my new approach to the process that I’ve developed. I am keen to remain playful and exploratory within my work and want to integrate my work with the audience and in some facet allow the audience to directly interact with the work as explored in the interactive illustration workshop I attended during this enquiry. I would like to explore how I can use illustration as a catalyst for interaction. I also would like to explore the potential of starting my own zine or publication, as I have already had my work featured in number of other publications so I think it would be an exciting and fulfilling challenge to create my own.

for the external project we had a choice of many briefs, I chose the print social brief where we had to design a t-shirt to inspire change in regards to Cop26.
although the topic isn't directly related to my primary enquiry I still wanted to think about everyday people and draw my inspiration from them so I researched the common attitudes toward the climate change movement and found out that a lot of people feel out of control in terms of the fate of the planet as the issue seems so enormous and it doesn't feel that any of the small changes we are encourages to make actually make a difference in the long run. I, therefore, wanted my design to reflect the relationship between the everyman and nature and highlight the strength in being active the power of autonomy and how small changes can have big impacts.

Our designs were limited to three colours so I chose three different tones of green as they are aesthetically pleasing and have direct connotations of sustainability. I chose to add a caption to my design to make the message more impactful.

The work in progress show theme was 'Get Out The Bin' which was focused on celebrating our failures from our third year and general university experience. I wanted my work to demonstrate the frustration I would feel through this unit as although I put in a lot of hard work I still felt that I wasn't getting the outcomes that I had hoped for, in both quantity and quality. I designed a frame which would house a reem of paper, the paper would be layer upon layer pf location drawing as this would also demonstrate how I would draw the same thing over and over again and come away not learning anything new.
I wasn't entirely happy with my piece but I feel that this made it even more fitting for the show.

For my method illustration task I wanted to experience other peoples lives first hand and gain a better understanding of my topic and initial interest. I walked around my local high street and would sit on pubic benches and observe he way people walk around and interact around me, after this I started considering other places where people congregate, so I started doing similar things on public transport, I watched people from my window and would ride the tube up and down and watch people.
From this I had more questions than I had when I first started the unit.
Why do people interact with strangers?
Why don't people interact with strangers?
Where do peoples lives intersect?
What is the significance of interactions with strangers?

This workshop really helped me in terms of practically drawing and generating images, It allowed me to draw while thinking about the physicality of space and place which is very important to my topic of choice as I want to explore the significance of the way that people take up space.

From my discussions in my tutorials I have more of a direction towards exploring the use of illustration as a tool for research as i will need to have an understanding of what it is i'm investigating in this nit and unit 10, in order to build up a body of work.

I looked deeper into the work of Sophie Calle, though most of Calle's work she explores primary research through the use of photography and text, she also gathers information by witnessing it first hand.

One of Calle's most notable pieces: "shadow" is particularly playful with the way that information is documented as in the work Calle is being followed and photographed by a private investigator while she is also following and recording the private investigator, therefore showing the playful two way stalking the pair engaged in.

In terms of my work i would like to draw from Calle's practice and explore the fundamentals of people identity and find out how people behave and what makes interactions with strangers so special before exploring using illustration as a cataylist for interaction.

Inspired by Calle's work i wanted to start gathering a body of research to explore in more detail and because of the nature of my topic it isn't really something which i can research and witness from home. Because of this i decided to experiment with photography. I made an effort to take my camera out and about with me as many places as i would go. I wasn't precious about the photos i took because i didn't want to see an edited or censored version of the places i had been i wanted to see them in all their detail and honesty.
When i looked back on the photos when i got home i was so excited by their outcome, it made me realise that even when taking them i wasn't fully aware of my surroundings, i was on auto pilot rather than fully taking in where i was and who was around me so it was interesting to have a physical reminder that i was able to look at and examine in full detail.

To develop from my photographs i took i looked into

Wasilly Kandinsky's study into minimising subject matter, which takes images and breaks them down in simple forms, shapes and blocks in order to understand them better and easier.

I took my photos and printed some, then over laid them with tracing paper and traced out the main forms i saw, it allowed me to see the way people hold them selves and the way they move around one another without getting distracted by the details of the images, i quite liked this idea of zooming in on one feature of the image or of real life and then examining it in detail.

I then imported the photos to photoshop and traced over the forms, focussing this time on mainly how people congregate as i found it particularly interesting looking into how people take up space.

After working from my photos for a while I wanted to go and experience more things first hand and allow this to guide my investigation. So I went location drawing, I rode the tube up and down and made small, quick observational studies, I treated it like taking notes as it allowed me to jot down what was happening as it was happening. I focused largely on hand gestures, the way people hold themselves and other 'unconscious' behaviours as I wanted to focus on people when they weren't aware they were being watched. moments of vulnerability.

developing on from the 'Drawing with text' and 'the hundreds' workshops I wanted to explore capturing the public through writing, I would take a note pad on the tube to uni with me and write down observations of what I would see. Sometimes I would select a person and write as much detail about them as I could, treating the text like a drawing, and other times I would simply write whatever I saw whenever I saw it. Most of the notes came out quite nonsensical, rambling. I feel that some of the writing is more indicative of myself than it is of others, it almost allows me to playback my inner monologue as I see the scene play out.
After this I went back to observing from my window and used my voice to write, I felt that this would be more spontaneous than physically writing as it's so much faster. Again the results of this were quite strange to read back but also interesting and matter of fact.
On its own, I think the writing I explored shows a fragmented version of events so it made me consider exploring the use f layering research methods together.

I wanted to briefly experiment with the layering of text and image as i wanted my work to paint a richer picture than i was able to capture through showing one research method at a time. I think it worked very successfully and has encouraged me to explore this more as i like how they fill in the gaps for each other, what the image doesn't tell you the writing does and vice versa.

In one of my tutorials, it was suggested that i look into reportage in illustration, after some research it occurred to me that this is what i had been doing through this unit, i had been recording information through drawing and writing. This was a turning point for my process as now my work felt more valid, i now understood what i was doing, i was using illustration as a tool to investigate the behaviours of strangers. Before this i was getting slightly concerned that all of my outcomes were so fast paced and lacked depth but since using text and image together and looking into the work of Rachel Gannon and Tom Good i felt more confident in presenting my work as a body of work, each drawing is only a fragment of the whole story of my enquiry.

To gather more raw information for me to work from I decided to expand on my photography work and take some videos. I rode the tube up and down continuously and recorded as i went, i wandered through the stations to see what would happen and who i would encounter. Once i got home a reviewed the videos i was able to watch a review and edit and zoom in. It was so exciting being able to play back small moments which i may have not even noticed if i was trying to draw on location. I then broke the videos into smaller screen grabs and zoomed in sections, then i annotated them, analysing the way that people move and hold themselves.

When recording the videos and watching them back in order to annotate them I had a moment of realisation, Sound.
The sound from my recordings is so evocative of the place, it immediately puts you back into the moment it was recorded. So the explore this more I took various recordings of public places where people would pass through, mainly the underground, the bus and the train station from my window. I found this moment very exciting and began to think of how i could layer sound with image and turned to animation. Developing from my research into Muybridge in my compendium I began considering the application of my location drawings, videos and sound into a frame by frame animations to better capture the real-life moments they're based on.

Working from the videos I took earlier in my enquiry I created a series of frame by frame gifs that show moments of significance from my journeys across the underground. I chose moments that highlighted the vulnerabilities of people when people were alone or struggling with a bag etc. I also liked animating a group of strangers moving around one another, it allowed me to see how they behave and interact, so timid. Similarly to my location drawings I left much of the background empty as I wanted to build on the concept of non-place and allow the behaviours of the people to imply the context.

In a tutorial I shared how I was struggling a little with using the same raw material over and over again, it was then suggested that I look into using CCTV and surveillance as my raw material as it would allow me to work from a fly on the wall perspective.
I found that there are many CCTV live streams that are available to the public, I then started using these to draw from and observe, continuing to write and animate.

I found that using CCTV was useful when looking at the way people occupy space but I felt it was too removed for me to properly analyse the behaviours and interactions of people so I went back to sourcing more raw material first hand by filming, recording, writing and drawing in public spaces.

I did some more research into practitioners who work with animation, particularly papercut animation as I felt it could relate to the paper model I made in the experiments with drawing workshop but found that this deviated too much from the body of reportage work I had been producing and didn't align with the concept of non-place, in letting the figures and information speak for its self. although this is something I would like to explore in the future.

Following all the work I produced in this unit so far I began to consider how I could construct the narrative of my enquiry into a tangible outcome with a coherent story. I decided to make a film for the CPP as the format is more applicable to the various formats of work I've been exploring through unit 9 as well as being more dynamic visually which I think aligns with the concept I've been researching as looking at static images when describing something which is so firmly based in the movement wouldn't translate as well.

I wanted my voice as a practitioner to come through as this unit has been explored so personally, a large portion of the research I have done is primary therefore my realisations will be a feature of the CPP

My journey through unit 9 has been exciting and largely transformative, it gave me ample opportunity to be critical and reflect on my work whilst also growing my confidence in being a self-led practitioner. I think I've grown in terms of being more independent and self-motivated as well as becoming more process-driven as over the course of the unit I became less excited about the outcomes of my work and more excited by the process of making, discovering and learning. I also enjoyed exploring illustration as a research tool as this is something I had never really considered before, I had always viewed illustration as only a tool of communication rather than of discovery, where now I see how using it in both facets would be beneficial to me as a practitioner.

My work evolved heavily from the start of the unit until now and my opinions and discoveries about the way strangers behave and interact have changed. I came to realise that there are a lot more societal factors that influence the way that people behave than I had first assumed, gender, race, religion, sexuality, identity, time, technology and more all have a bearing on how and why people interact with one another in the way that they do. I also grew to appreciate the absence of interaction also as this is often just as poetic. I feel that my work is most effective when viewed together as a body of work, it provides a transdisciplinary account of my unit 9 enquiry. The viewer is bombarded from all angles with information, resulting in an immersive account of my own journey through unit 9 as well as the journeys of all the strangers I've observed on the way.

For my ips project, I want to heavily draw from the knowledge I've gained in this unit and then circle back to one of the aims I had for unit 9 which was to "explore how illustration can be used as a catalyst for interaction amongst strangers" because early in my unit 9 enquiry I realised I would have to gather and understand a lot more of what why and how strangers interact and behave before I could start trying to create moments of interaction myself. I would still like to remain playful so I want to perhaps create a set of experiments that are designed based on my unit 9 research to bring people together and then use the most successful ones and pursue it further.
