The single note, as defined by Ratliff, is a representation of the performer or an event. It is a manifestation of the musicians It is an important musical element because it creates authenticity. When including various notes, the composer runs the risk that someone else may have already used similar repeated notes, however, when only using one repeated note, it becomes a unique to the composer. Ratliff argues that the same repeated note within a song, no matter how long or short, is the most important part of a song. I agree with Ratliff’s argument because in songs such as “I Wanna Be Sedated,” by Ramones, the guitar solo in the middle of the song by Johnny Ramone contains the exact same repeated note giving extra emphasis to it. A song in Ratliff’s playlist that exemplifies such musical concept is “Furthest thing” by Drake. In the middle of the song when Drake raps “You know I stay reminiscin’ and makeup sex is tradition but you been missing girl....,” he does so in a single breath: a single note. This puts a greater emphasis on those lyrics in comparison to the rest if the song. An example of a song that is not included in Ratliff’s playlist, but that exemplifies the concept of the “one note” is the song “Take Me Out,” by Franz Ferdinand. Starting at 55 seconds into the song, the same guitar note is repeated over and over. Such repetition intrigues the listener as it creates the plot and sets the tone of the song; in other words, the whole song was written around that one repeated guitar note.

This image of a fire alarm is an example of the repetition of a single note because it repeats the same annoying sound over and over again. Though this sound is very annoying to listen to, it demonstrates the importance and danger of the situation.
