The beginning of the story which is the exposition, explains the conflict between Delia and Sykes. Sykes treats Delia poorly because of her job, cleaning the white people's laundry.

rising action

Sykes decides to get under Delia's skin by attempting to scare her with a rattlesnake, which frightens Delia and she begins to plot her revenge on Sykes.

climax

while Delia is outside, Sykes goes into the house and is attacked by the snake. Delia then makes the spilt descision to let Sykes die.

falling action

The falling action is very similar to the climax as it just consists of Delia listening to Sykes suffer until death inside.

resolution

The resolution is when Delia finally sees Sykes suffering and for a second, feels pity for him, but continues to let him suffer.

I believe that the plot most closely follows the linear pathway. (I say this because the other pathways are really difficult to identify).

Which plot events seem to break the chronological sequence and where does this event fit into the chronology of other events?

The last part where Delia feels a bit of pity for Sykes does not exactly fit into the chronology of other events. There really aren't any other events that don't fit into the chronology of the events becuase each event was placed meticulously in order to achieve a certain meaning.
