Chain of Survival/Universal Precautions

Throughout this past semester in this Sports Med class, I've learned how to do CPR, First Aid, and how to use an AED. In class, Mrs. Pila gave us a simulation where we had to do CPR and it showed me what to do in case I come across someone that is unresponsive on the ground. First, I'm supposed to make sure the scene is safe and have someone or myself call 9-1-1 and get an AED. After that, I should start the 30 compressions and end with the 2 breaths, then the AED. I have also watched videos to prove my mastery on CPR and the use of an AED. Also, I have learned about universal precautions and the importance of wearing gloves as well as wearing different gloves when dealing with other patients. I know how to wash my hands if I was ever contaminated. Also, I know the chain of survival, and what I should do if I see anyone in danger. Lastly, I learned all about First Aid, I learned about splinting, blood control, bracing and taping. I've done fairly well on the quizzes that mentioned CPR, First Aid, and AED, as well as the chain of survival. All in all, I have done simulations to teach me what to do in the situation if I have seen anyone unresponsive. Also, I have found a strategy to remove my gloves without getting contaminated, and if this was unsuccessful, I know how to wash it off. Lastly, I learned how to splint, brace, and tape because of the simulations Mrs. Pila had us do.

Professions

In this class, I've learned that there are numerous professions that include or deal with topics I've studied in Sports Medicine. The main Sports Medicine profession would have to be a Physical Therapist, since they help athletes when they need it. In order to master what I know about the different roles of professions, I researched it. I looked up what type of courses may deal with CPR, bandaging, wrapping, and there were quite a few. I've noticed that Nurses, Paramedics, doctors, physical therapists, and more. They are all different in the way that they work. I've also done a project to prove my mastery. It included two professions I may have interest in that include sports medicine. I've always been interested in becoming a general family doctor. Also, my mom is a medical lab scientist, so she knows how to do that stuff just in case. She used to be a life guard as well. All in all, I've researched what types of professions may use the course Sports Med, I've worked on a project on it, and I have experience with my mom to teach me. On the project, I used my knowledge, my mom's knowledge, and google. It helped me to know the different role sports med has on different professions. I hope to go into one of these professions in the future.

Injuries

I learned that there are a lot of different injuries. For example, there are acute injuries like abrasion and bigger types of injuries like fractures. I'm thankful to learn about these types of injuries because they will definitely help me in the long run if I become a doctor. I learned this because of the PowerPoint Mrs. Pila had for notes. They really helped me understand types of injuries that are small (acute) as well as bigger injuries. I learned a based on the worksheet Mrs. Pila had us fill out. I researched a lot of the injuries and looking at the pictures helped me notice the differences between all these injuries. I liked researching the injuries because I think it truly helps me because I learn something new through them. My mom also helps me know the difference in all these injuries because of the fact she used to major in nursing before she changed her mind. She learned a lot about these types of injuries and she helps me learn a lot more. All in all, there are different types of injuries that I've learned about through this sports med class. The Powerpoint gave me specific details about certain acute injuries and the notes focused more on bones. I think since I want to be a Doctor it will be necessary to know all of these different type of injuries and how to deal with them. I wish I went through all of them more, however, just to know at least a little of each.

Wrapping Skills

My favorite thing that I learned in this Unit was the bandaging and wrapping. I liked the way that we got to experience the way we are supposed to bandage and wrap. Mrs. Pila had us try it out first and after we did, she would tell us the correct way to do it. I truly like that because many different ideas were passed throughout the class and then we all found out the true way it should be done. I learned the sequences and the steps in order to bandage, brace, and/or tape someone if I ever needed to. In class, we have taped/braced other people. We learned about the figure 8 and how many times we should go around an ankle, wrist, etc. I think I definitely need to work on this a lot more, but for the most part, I think I did well. I need to get better with the Achilles part or the heel of the ankle. I had some experience because of all the simulations Mrs. Pila made us do. Also, I learned the differences of bracing and taping and, which might be better to use depending on the situation. Honestly, I loved this topic and I hope to get better at it soon.

Blood Pressure

To be honest, before even taking this class, I wasn't always 100% sure on how to measure blood pressure. I like how Mrs. Pila gave us videos to watch in order to understand how to measure it and how to use the equipment. I've had experience with this stuff before since my mom wanted to major in nursing she had this equipment, yet I didn't get to know how to use it until watching the videos Mrs. Pila assigned us. One video that helped me learn was the nursing video. It helped me learn what nurses do, so in case I change my mind of becoming a doctor, I have nursing to look forward to. It teaches you the steps you should take when dealing with a patient and how to check vital signs. Count all the heartbeats in 60 seconds. ( to give you the beats per minute). I'm thankful for this video because I wasn't always sure about how to do it. Also, I watched another video to help me learn how to use the equipment. The blood pressure cuff helps you measure the systolic pressure and shows you that the patient's heart is filling up and repumping blood. I liked watching these videos, but I wish we had a simulation to do with this.
