On the 25th of April 1915 ANZAC troops left the Gallipoli peninsula and landed on Turkish beaches. Their goal was to capture a series of ridges, but from the start they were faced with many challenges and problems. They had high cliffs, steep ridges and Turkish soldiers raining down bullets on them. The soldiers named the place where they landed Anzac, it has kept its name and is now called Anzac Cove.

Gallipoli is a peninsula located in the southern part of East Thrace. Gallipoli is important to Australians because it shows the courage and determination the troops had to protect their country and allied countries. It can also be a place where people can go to feel closer to love ones they might have lost in the war.

ANZAC stands for Australian New Zealand Army Corps. The celebration of ANZAC day started on the 25th of April 1916 but wasn't until 1927 every state commemorated the day as a public holiday. The purpose of Anzac day is to remember all Australians and New Zealand solders who have died in military operations and people who are still serving today. Anzac day is an important day to celebrate because it makes us remember those who sacrificed themselves for us.

Soldiers had to agree on a set time to bury the bodies of all the dead soldiers, they stopped fighting and even presented friendly gestures to each other. After the time was up they returned to fighting as usual. One of the most amazing parts of the campaign is the evacuation. On the 19th and 20th December the last troops left Gallipoli, during the whole evacuation they lost around 6 casualties.
