Kambria, I appreciate your use of mixed media and strong sense of unity in your work. Your piece is like a photograph that slowly develops, the more time I spend with it the more details I uncover. Some of my favorite features are the overall muted color palette, the combination of text and imagery, and the physical jacket. I enjoy how you are starting to fuse the jacket and the collage together into one piece, I recommend inserting thick armature wire on the inside of you jacket so you are able to manipulate how it stands up and presents itself.

The incorporation of the jacket is so unique and really makes this so cool. The more I look, the more I see! I think if you were to add more to the inside, that would really bring it together. As it is only the 75% mark, I understand it's going to look unfinished.

For the outside of the jacket, I say leave it how it is, I think it looks great with just the writing. It will draw attention away from the inside of the jacket if you were to add anything else.

Overall, this piece is amazing and I cannot wait to see where you go with it! :)

LOGAN OMG I LOVE THIS!!! Your growth from last year to now is insane. I absolutely love this piece and it's linework, that is definitely your strong suit. One thing I would definitely work on is filling in unneeded negative space. There is a lot of it showing in the art and I'm not sure if it's intentional or not, it is only 75% done after all. I think if you were to add more lines or build up the existing lines and add more weight to them, your piece would be a lot stronger - giving you a stronger composition!

Also, this is just an idea, maybe if you were to (try digitally) add a tiny pop of color (red, blue, purple, etc. might work well) that would look kind of neat and give it some pizzazz lol.
Junji Ito is a great artist to consider for your piece, he does a great job using line weight. Another artist to look at is @thundrqunt, her inktober drawings also convey line weight great.

Overall, I really love the piece and your idea. I think this is gonna look so cool! Also, is this going to be a part of a series? Because that would be so cool if you had a series of pieces like this that all go together! Hope this helped :)

first off, i think this is an extremely strong piece. it is very indicative of your style and expresses a lot of emotion. you did an amazing job at creating tension in the scene. it feels like a movie scene!! i think mark making would be a really good idea if you focus on line weight to add emotion. if you are outlining things, you really want the lines to dictate the motion that something is moving in. also, i am not sure if that is a mirror or a picture frame in the background (im just assuming you arent done yet. not trying to be mean i swear) but if it is a picture i would suggest using implied strokes to create an abstract-looking picture. that way the viewer can interpret it in different ways that mean a lot to themself. overall this is an amazingly stunning piece and i am so excited to see how it turns out.

Overall this is a super strong piece and I adore the color palette, especially with the slight contrast from the creature and the background. I agree with crow, adding a light source and some streaky lighting to make it looks like the sun is shining through the leaves will make this piece feel even more magical! I can show you a strong example in class. I think tack could be a good idea but it could also quickly become muddied / too busy with colors, I think adding some jewelry like a breastplate or harness with emerald stones would look ethereal.

Okay so I love this.

I think we mentioned this in class, the only major change I'd do right now is speeding up the framerate of the beginning sequence, which can be done afterwards. You have a super super super strong color palette and character design, I love the style difference in the eyes and the body. It really makes me think of a Claymation for a song called Evelyn Evelyn I watched a bit ago, just the overall mood I get from it. Another thing I might change would be the linework, I can tell you redrew some lines and not others, which makes it look unintentionally choppy. Personally, I would trace over every line to give it a wiggle effect with the rest of the body parts that move as well. overall, I adore it!! here is an example of a simple animation I think would be a good reference for simple movements
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmgtXpteOQM&list=PLdMqLKznGAM0vBWp1etfryi28VKaZPWGl&index=11

Logan this is really good. I think that the drawing looks very clean and nice. To make the middle composition to make it stand out better. 1 you can possibly try to make a symmetrical background to make it pop out. Because the drawing isn't perfectly symmetrical i think that it will make your look at it in a certain way. I think you find out where you want your main point of focus, and try it make it stand from the rest of the drawing. 2 you could also try to do a cool background that isn't so middle, and goes towards a side to balance out the eye. Lol sorry for the long critique.

Overall i extremely excited to see the finished product and to see the rest of your theme. I hope this help :) :)

When using something like digital art remember to use different line weights to make the overall artwork to seem dynamic. In some places the digital art seems a bit messy, using a clean line work might be very helpful to help differentiate what everything is and isn't.

Zoie, I love the colors that you chose to use for this piece. They portray a melancholy essence, which I think you're aiming for so good job! Especially in the close up shot, I really enjoy how you mixed cooler tones in with the red to add depth. Your mark making is also very effective and I can tell you took the time to create multiple layers and build the shape of the face. For your shadows, I would recommend using warmer and darker colors since you mentioned that you're worried about the face looking dead. Using colors that aren't in your pallete might help build contrast as well! I've seen colored pencil portraiture artists use a large variety of colors (green, purple, blue, etc.) that create depth without making a piece look flat. For your background, I would say maybe add a pattern or some texture? Or you could potentially make it a color that contrasts more with the figure's skin tone so it helps the face stand out. Overall I really like how this is coming out and I'm proud of how much improvement you've made over the years!

I really like how well you've communicated your foreground, middle ground and background, and the design of the creature is so unique! It seems mystical and intriguing, and of course you have to love the trademark black stripes on the tail. In terms of lighting, the two previous critiques covered the idea about the sun through the trees (which I think is a great idea), but adding on to that, it would look nice if the patterns of the light through the leaves would show up on the figure and the creature in sort of a speckled pattern. I think it would look really natural and it would tie the piece together more than it already is.

The style really pops and adds a good contrast to the colors :)

I think to add extra cohesiveness to both sides you could add more of the dramatic hand lettering on the inside and on the back add flashes of the different colors from the inside to bring them together. Also on the inside it would likely help if there was either a clear border to go over or a gradual fade-out with the collage. I just noticed the deeper contrast with the inside's message and the outside's message, like someone's inner and outer being !!! It's so cool I love the chaotic yet calm energy that it gives off inside that's completed with a smooth and hard outer shell.

I don't think I have anything else on this, great work so far !!!!

hey hey, i like the concept for the jacket, combining unconventional 2d things on a 3d jacket. the inside of the jacket is stellar, i would continue your color pallet, i would keep the inside and outside of the jacket two different colors, like you have it now. i would add images and more 2d collage material on the outside of the jacket, that matches the color of the
pre-existing color. which gives the illusion that the jacket is created from materials that aren't conventionally used for jackets. more collaging is what going to take this to the next level, your already going in a direction that i believe will lead to a beautiful piece of art.

hey doll, this piece is super adorable, i really love the concept and colors. i would say something that would the piece would benefit from is a distinguished light source. once you plan where the light source is coming from, you can map out shadows, and highlights, something you can also do is have highlighted pieces of the ground where the sun peaks through the leaves. definitely a light source is whats going to be the thing that brings it all together. good luck on your junior year!

in regards to the concern of the skin tone giving an lifeless kind of effect, i would change up the colors you use for the face. right now your using very cool tones, like blues and purples, which is what creates that lifeless effect. i would use warmer colors like, reds, yellows, oranges, browns, and pinks, i would sparingly use the color pink. also i would only use pink honestly in the cheeks, and under the eyes if you want to project the idea of a face that just cried. right now the vibe doesn't match the theme, your theme isn't very present in the piece. i would also fix your proportions on the face, it doesn't quite sell realism, nor does it sell purposeful non-realism. i would also add highlights to the hair, your could even play with what color the light source on your hair is going to be. and for the background i love the color, i think something to consider, is to add patterns in your background. i would add detail, to the clothing as well, or keep the clothing one color, and make it a pattern. at the the figure looks high/stoned. which can be fixed easily, and is definitely not your intention i believe. the concept has the potential to be strong, i just believe there are things you gotta fix, i like where it going tho.

the concept is very strong, especially relating to the times we are in now. i would say the strongest piece so far is the mask covering just the mouth, with the lips. what makes it so strong is the use of materials and colors, i believe is you emulate that with the other two masks it will make them stronger. at the moment mesh and flowers isn't very strong on its own. you definitely have the right idea going, i have faith in this.

aesthetically this is beautiful. i actually think the low quality gives it extra spice. its like the purposefully low quality, beautiful art vintage display kind of aesthetic. i think if you embrace the low quality, you could benefit, when art gives you lemons, make lemonade. no mistakes, just happy accidents.

at the moment the colors sell the idea your going for, but the subject does not. if your going to add a digital drawing over top, i would think of adding a bustling futuristic city to match the vibe. also i would try making some subjects have a glowing affect. i think if you combine abstraction with a realistic cyberpunk city, is whats going to tie it all together. i would also focus on your perspective, right now it is completely unclear what is going on at the moment. i feel the digital drawing on top is necessary to complete the work.

one strong aspect of the piece is your use of color. in the skull using other colors instead of using the color black. the skin tone is strong, but there are a bit of proportion issues in the figure. the pattern is super strong, and i would definitely continue it through both pieces of work. i would love to see more of that juicy coloration from the skull in your first piece shown. the largest thing i would fix at the moment is proportions, because proportions stick out like a sore thumb.

one strong aspect of this piece is the perspective. you feel like the subject is actually in a room. your shading and highlights help communicate this. this piece i feel is the strongest at communicating the idea the piece is based on. the art style with this piece is very clear and successful. the only thing that i would change, is to make the door more clear in the background, right now it blends in a bit too much.

The figure itself is very strong, what this lacks is a background. leaving the background blank would make the piece not as strong as it could be. besides that, its all good, your proportions are very good, you just need a background.

i agree with crow that lighting from behind the trees would be super cool. i do think it would be hard to pull off, but i think you would be able to handle it. i also think another thing to focus on is adding really strong highlights like straight up white on top of dried paint.

Hey, I really do like this. The art style is fun and it is so different than anything I have seen. I think what may help you is if you shorten the length (in time) of the title page. It kind of drags on a bit. Also with the title page maybe you should raise the words up, because the end of your name is getting a little cut off. I think the quality of video is fine. I think it kind of adds to the overall ascetic of the piece. I really enjoy your colors in the animation.
This is a really good piece. I can’t believe that you are doing something as hard as an animation. I’m so excited to see this finished.
