Analysis

Intersectionality is an interesting topic that is important to address in a Women and Gender Studies course. This padlet aims to capture a few aspects of intersectionality, but intersectionality is such a broad topic that a single padlet could never completely analyze the many facets.

First, “Welcome to Hell” from SNL is a funny video that pokes some fun at how life is harder for women in our society. Later on in the video, Leslie Jones addresses the fact that she likes what the women are doing, but she brings up the fact that it is harder for women of color. The video doesn’t get into specifics, and I think that the video could have addressed it more. While themes were universal, there are specific problems women of color face (as Leslie Jones knows).

Next, “The 100” article discusses outrage over the death of a main, lesbian character: Lexa. Fans were angry with the show over the death, not just because they like the character, but because the character represented a complex gay woman on TV. Gay representation is sparse in media, and gay women representation is even less frequent. An intersectional feminist approach finds women’s representation as leaders in media embarrassing, but lesbian women are so rarely leading others that the show made a mistake with her death.

The picture of the former first ladies is a good demonstration of intersectional feminism because only one of the women is looking angry/unflattering. The three white women are looking docile, poised, and professional. However, Michelle looks angry, ridiculous, and ‘manly’. While sexist attacks have no doubt been hurtled at all of these women, Mrs. Obama is also subject to many racist attacks. This picture (and many others comparing her to a gorilla) need an intersectional lens to fully realize how sexism and racism combine in ugly ways.

The last element is information about what a TERF is. A trans-exclusionary radical feminist is a non-intersectional feminist that only cares about biological women. Transgender women are women, and developed feminists recognize the diverse ways in which women can exist- no matter how they were born.

While this padlet didn’t address class, ability, and many other topics, an intersectional analysis of feminism looks at the whole story.
