October 17, Jordan and the world celebrate the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, at a time when 1.069 million Jordanians are in the poverty zone, according to the results of the 2017-2018 Household Expenditure and Income Survey, issued by the Department of Statistics.

The Higher Population Council stated in a statement that the slogan of the International Day, “Work together to empower children, their families and their societies, in order to eradicate poverty,” which falls on October 17 of each year.
The council said that despite Jordan’s achievements in reducing poverty on the economic and social levels, it still faces challenges that affect the poverty rate, most notably: the development gap between governorates, high unemployment rates, especially among youth, and the low rate of women's economic participation.

The statement included the results of the Household Income and Expenditure Survey 2017-2018 issued by the Department of Statistics, which stated that the poverty rate among Jordanians amounted to 15.7%, meaning that 1.069 million Jordanians are within the poverty area.

The rate of hunger poverty in Jordan was 0.12%, which is equivalent to 7993 individuals. As for the poverty gap, it reached 3.5%, and the severity of poverty was 1.2%..
