Joshua Acuna, Emily Gonzales
Before the lawsuit there was no resources for bilingual students as well as teachers, bilingual students were left to fend for themselves and got lost in the education system. Through the lawsuit it opened doors for bilingual teachers and students to have structured immersion programs. We discussed how bilingual was looked at as a deficit back then whereas now it is looked at as a vital tool and is encouraged. Joshua talked about how his parents stopped him from speaking Spanish because when they were growing up they were punished for speaking it in the classroom.

And today it is viewed more as a tool. "Tough it out" mentality has been proven to not be beneficial for students and has mostly been done away with. We were shocked to hear that about 10% of students reach English proficiency.

Our group found it strange how before we had proper program schools would force non-english speaking students into special education classrooms. As well as the fact that they had to get a class action law suit in order to set up a proper program for ELL/ESL student. The idea that not long ago schools would just put all students that had learning disabilities or were ELL/ESL in the same classroom, under a mentality of one medicine cures all was rather sad/upsetting.

It's always baffled us how adults have more opportunities when they are bilingual and many many students lose their bilingual abilities while going through intensive ESL programs. The aspect of social emotional development is also extremely intriguing. The student talking about how comfortable he was because he didn't have to separate his friends by language and that's a common issue for pullouts, etc. Overall we loved this educational model.

The three goals for Bilingual Education were to improve students English proficiency, Core curriculum in primary languages, and maintain students cultural identity. When watching this video, one of the things that stuck out to us the most was the idea that we should not teach students English and then completely forget their first language. We need to incorporate their first language and their culture into learning as well. Another important aspect was that California preposition 227 had other states define what their instruction for English Language Learners was and this led to states implementing the English immersion programs.

It was interesting to learn that there are different types of bilingual people. Becoming bilingual at any age has major cognitive benefits beyond social/career benefits that are more commonly talked about. We also thought the information about accents and pronunciation was important for the general public and educators as well because we can't gauge our future students based upon these factors. Their brains are still growing and developing appropriately and in more ways than other students. These are clearly more recent studies because even as the video points out there used to be a higher rate of discrimination against ELL children & adults.

Before it was a sink or swim environment for bilingual students and over 80% of bilingual students were dropping out due to limited English proficiency. The creators of NABE understood that an 80% failure rate was something worth changing, so they helped develop criteria and curriculum that we continue to use today. The NABE community expanded overtime and allowed for a huge network of advocates to help build bilingual structure by creating innovative ways for ELL students to be involved in all aspects of education.

The was an 80% drop out rate while they had specific English as a Second Language programs. Some thought this was because they were only focused on English learning, and were hindered in all other academic aspects. NABE also has students participate and assist with building programs, so that they can advocate for themselves. Overall NABE's whole mission is that it's beneficial to be a bilingual learner, and that all who can should learn a second language.

These are the first ten people who dared to challenge the school system. They knew they had to do something about english not always being the primary language taught in school. Therefore, they brought bilingual education back to the state of Texas. 80% failure rate due to the sink or swim approach was not what they viewed at as being successful. These 10 collaborated and intervated to create a new program to teach ELL and offer what was needed for all students regardless of the language they speak. Cognitive development, interpersonal relationships, and spread of multicultural grew and enhanced throughout the years due to these 10 people. We are glad these 10 stood up for what is right and are helping us be better when we become teachers as well. This video was very informing and positive.

NABE is the National Association of Bilingual Education. It was a group of 10 people that decided that the Education system needed to change. This was the first bill introduced and passed for Bilingual Education. It was so forbidden that you could lose your teaching certificate and even get fined. One of the pioneers explained the system as Nationalism over Pedagogy. There was an 80% dropout rate and they compared this to a terrible batting average. They pushed for Bilingual Education so much that one of them said he was involved in about 60 court cases that had something to do with the it. Another one of the pioneers mentioned that in a world so full of technology, it is very valuable to be able to communicate through more than one language because all we have left to do is communicate and innovate. The pioneers also discussed that it started out as a smaller thing and turned into a professional organization that advocates for higher standards and broad public education agenda.

Overall we discussed the ideas and more or less ridiculousness of barring teachers from teaching in other languages. It made no sense as the only thing it would do is to make it harder for the teacher to accommodate to students individual needs, and inhibit students abilities to learn. The idea that teachers had to close their doors in order to keep their jobs is both amazingly ridiculous (The fact that they had to close their doors, to prevent being found out) and courages (The breaking the law part) to risk their own careers to best serve their students. Some of our own experiences were that the fact of that time was that teaching a second language was almost frowned upon. In my experience, my grandfather didn't want to pass down the ability to speak german, and in Chandora's case her father refused to teach her Spanish.

The student continue to learn and enhance their native language as well as English. They scaffolded Spanish starting off with a little bit and adding more and more as the years went up. By 3rd grade english and spanish are 50-50. We like how they don't take away anything from the students. Their cultures and heratiges are being encouraged and improved along with enlgish.

Kyla Franks, Aileen Luce; Children connect more with languages they learn rather than adults, because of the elasticity of their brain allowing both side to work together while learning. As an adult it's more the left side of the brain working on the learning, so there's not as deep of an emotional connection to the second language. This is known as the Critical Period Hypothesis. Knowing a second language helps make your brain healthier, and in turn can delay the onset of Alzheimer's and Dementia by about 5 years.

The video was interesting to hear such a huge change of ideas surrounding bilingualism before the 1960s to now. Before the 1960s bilingual students were thought of as "handicap" whereas now research shows how a bilingual brain is healthier, more complex, and more actively engaged. We also found it interesting how learning a second language is easier for younger children and progressively gets harder throughout the years due to the flexibility of the right side of the brain and the left. It is hard to teach an old dog new tricks but it is still always possible.

This professor had a lot of wisdom and innovative ideas for teaching ELL students. We thought it was so eye opening that he intuitively lets his students make mistakes in group conversations and gives them the freedom to not feel judged or assessed on it. He combined a lot of research based proven strategies to create his "BS Detector" Method and all of them promoted critical thinking, social emotional development and other factors of schooling that are essential for CLD students. The quote at the end of the video was also really impactful and thought provoking, where he said he wants to open doors for his students and allow them the choice to walk through them. This educator was so passionate, well spoken and had so many insights for us as future educators!

It was neat to see the students being both happy, and engaged in learning a second language along with the idea that their parents were supportive as well. The idea of gradually teaching Spanish in the way of working down from 80% Spanish to a 50/50 English and Spanish in the classroom along with the fact that students stated that they felt like themselves both in and out of the classroom rather than feeling as if they were being forced into one or the other languages.

This video talked about how many students were passing tests and were able to do worksheets but weren't able to have a conversation. This problem then fostered the idea of the "BS Method" which was really breaking down components of English into specific questions, specific ideas, and not being afraid to experience a new language. The three steps of the "BS Method" are step 1 critical thinking, step 2 identify and neutralize logical fallacies, and step 3 is identify levels of cognition. We liked how he stated that people who can not change their minds can not change anything. A big part of how he incorporated the "BS Method" was highlighting social issues and different aspects of the world and how they all relate back to us.

Focusing on what the writers or speakers are saying, asking questions about it. Thinking about thinking, how others are thinking and getting their thoughts out to help the students get their own thoughts out. Allowing mistakes, not punishing for them, such as the way of allowing the students to use Spanglish as a way to get their thoughts out about the content. This flows really well into the writing aspect of allowing the students to just get the content, their thoughts out. Then go back and correct the grammar, and such in the paper after they've gotten the information out. Also, teaching through the real world current events, and not using textbooks. This allows the students to see, and hear the language in an everyday context rather than regulated textbook structure.

He divided the class into three stages critical thinking skill (asking specific questions), logical fallacy (mistake in reasoning process), and benjamin blooms taxonomy (deeper thinking skills). Overall these stages were used to teach english without being overly focused on grammar and smaller details which improved the learning experiences in his class. We liked this video because he focused on what the children know instead of always correcting them. This highered their self-confidence which resulted in better speaking skills and learning. The students social development was also more successful because they are not talking to each other more and interacting socially throughout the day.

He moved away from grammar lessons to BS detector and logical fallacies by asking questions. He was inspired by Bloon's Taxonomy. He wanted to move away from them remembering things but wanted them to analyze and question things instead. They were learning by doing and he compared that to memorizing a recipe instead of experiencing what the food tastes like. He emphasizes form being secondary to content until the students are proficient in content and then it flips to content being secondary to form. He also wanted to create a comfortable environment for conversation. This made students comfortable to make developmental errors.

The videos really brought to light a few things for me that I didn't know before even working in a school.
NABE being such a huge impact on how CLD students get their education is one of the key points I took away from this. In my hopes is that every school has teachers that are dedicated to not only their students but also their CLD students. Imagine if the people from a while ago got so much accomplished for our students imagine now with all our resources that we now have, what we can accomplish for our students.
Bilingual Education:
This video was such an eye opener for me. Bilingual Education is really an advantage to our own kids and students. Our brain is working in different ways with both languages which gives us a better education. Knowing that the points being made were that of the kids not knowing English were just being pushed off and more like an oh well type of attitude it really makes sense why the drop out rate is much higher for the ELL students.
Teaching English without Teaching English:
In this video I was able to pick up on how important it is for the students to fell comfortable in their classroom and around their peers. By allowing students to make mistakes but calling it a developmental error instead of mistake turns a whole different mind set to a CLD student. They will think of it differently in hopes of staying comfortable in making errors and being able to correct them.
The Duel Language Program:
The Dual Language Program is something that I get so excited about. While watching this video all I could think about was wow I wish we had this program in our school. It would benefit so many students in our area. I myself have children that would I would want in this program. Not only because they are have Hispanic but also because it is such a great opportunity for our kids education. The video really allows us to see all the benefits from this program. It allows for social emotional skills to come forward as well as higher education abilities for our kids' future.
Lao VS. Nichols
3 Goals is to improve students English proficiency, having the core curriculum in the primary language, and maintain the students cultural identity. The key question that we need to ask ourselves is how are we going to help the foreign language student in being successful. San Francisco seems like they really do have all their students best interest at heart. I am happy to hear that the district in San Francisco is still implementing their bilingual education to their students even though the topic is so controversial. This case allowed students to be multilingual and multicultural.
