There are two types of herpes simplex virus. HSV 1 which is the oral herpes. Oral herpes consists of cold sores around the mouth. HSV 2 is genital herpes. Genital herpes consists of sores around the genital areas.

Herpes can also include discharge that smells foul.

The long-term effects HSV 1 and HSV 2 can cause is rare but serious complications causing inflammation around the linings of the brain. Annoying as it would be to have herpes, it doesn't get worst over time. Actually, taking the medications like you should for herpes, causes it to not reoccur a lot. In fact, some people that have had herpes for years don't even get a breakout anymore. No one really knows how long they have had herpes because it can stay dormant for years.

Acyclovir, Famciclovir, and Valacyclovir are medications used to help genital herpes. Frequency of dosing can cause some medications not to be recommended. Acyclovir has been the most remarkable safety and most effective against mild or severe infections. Although there is no cure for genital herpes, medications can shorten outbreaks. Also, antiviral medications can reduce the chances of spreading it to other people.

Herpes is not spreaded by toilet seats or bedding! In fact the only way herpes is spreaded is by having sex (oral, anal, or genital areas) with an infected person. HSV 1 is caused by someone who has mouth sores, and you share your saliva with them. Herpes can be spreaded by skin-to-skin contact with people who are infected. Therefore, if you are infected and you touch a sore without washing your hands, you can spread it to anywhere on your body.
