One contemporary Philippine pop culture element I’m excited to feature is OPM, or Original Pilipino Music, which continues to thrive and evolve as a staple in Filipino culture. I chose OPM because of its ability to resonate with Filipinos of all ages, bringing together elements of traditional and modern sounds that capture the Filipino spirit. Today, OPM stands out because of its powerful impact on social media, where artists share heartfelt messages and stories through lyrics that speak to listeners' everyday lives. With artists like Ben&Ben, Moira Dela Torre, and Zack Tabudlo, OPM has become more than just music it’s a unifying force that represents the resilience, creativity, and depth of the Filipino experience, making it a true standout in Philippine pop culture today.

Hi! I'm Karylle Ishi C. Remonde, currently studying Bachelor of Science in Information Systems (BSIS) in section A224. As a passionate volleyball player, I play as both an open spiker and a setter, which lets me support my team in multiple ways. I was even recognized as the Best Spiker on my team, fueling my commitment to the sport. Off the court, I unwind by listening to OPM (Original Pilipino Music), as its calming melodies connect me to my roots. I'm also a fan of Philippine Pop Culture, from watching local films and following trends in Filipino street fashion to enjoying traditional dishes like adobo and street foods like kwek-kwek. Lastly, I’m inspired by the spirit of 'Bayanihan' (community unity), often promoted by influencers who encourage collective action, especially during times of need.

note : you can play the video, thank you.

OPM (Original Pilipino Music) has evolved into more than just a source of entertainment for Filipinos; it is also a means of identity construction, emotional expression, and social interaction. The Uses and Gratifications Theory demonstrates that audiences use OPM to meet certain personal and social needs. For example, songs by Moira Dela Torre and Ben&Ben enable listeners to express distinctly Filipino emotions and life experiences, resulting in a shared language for feelings of love, grief, and resilience. By providing a sense of relatability and comfort, OPM not only serves as a personal soundtrack for many people, but also as a source of cultural pride.Fans utilize these songs to reinforce their identity because the lyrics and melodies frequently represent Philippine values, social conflicts, and communal aspirations. Listeners' connections to the Filipino experience grow stronger as a result of these shared musical experiences, allowing OPM to play an important role in creating both personal and national identity.

In terms of social behavior, OPM singers have used their influence to promote social awareness and advocacy, particularly through online platforms where fans may interact with them. As listeners utilize music to connect with larger societal issues, OPM has evolved into a forum for social conversation, covering topics such as mental health, social justice, and community empowerment. For example, songs about resilience and communal support amid disasters encourage listeners to band together and help one another. This highlights OPM's ability to transform from a form of amusement to a voice for societal problems, emphasizing how it assists Filipinos in connecting with deeper socioeconomic issues. With its relevant themes and accessibility, OPM allows consumers to use music as both a source of comfort and a catalyst for social reflection, transforming how Filipinos perceive themselves and their collective experience.
