I found it quite interesting to see all the websites that could be used for resources for the adolescent aged students. Since I work with students in Special Education that benefit from graphic organizers, I liked the “All About Adolescent Literacy” website. It will be nice to print those out for use in the classroom for grades 4-12. I also thought this website was easy to understand and I think parents would benefit from it too. The Vimeo website with videos was nice to look at as a resource. This would be beneficial when a teacher wants to see the “how to” of teaching or presenting a lesson to the class, a mini lesson, writing workshop, or conferencing with a student. I liked that it broke the videos down into the categories of K-2 and also 3-8 grades to be more specific. The “Reading Strategies that Really Work” was a PDF of strategies that could be printed out in a booklet form. It would be nice to use to refer back to, as a teacher, to refresh myself on strategies that I could model within the classroom.
--Amy

The two websites that stuck out most to me as a secondary English teacher were "Adolescent Literacy" and "Videos: TC Reading and Writing Project." I appreciated the "Adolescent Literacy" website because it's a one-stop shop for reading activities, and I thought it was helpful to organize the resources into before, during, and after reading categories; in fact, I shared the link with my English colleagues already because one of them just asked me on Wednesday if I assess my students during their reading at all. The "Teacher's College" videos are helpful because it takes me back to student teaching days when I was able to see star teachers model star teaching. I really buy into Calkins' "Teacher's College" model, so it will be nice to have some Calkins-like teachers at my fingertips as resources!

Reading Rockets

This website seem to be geared more towards elementary age students, but I did find a few resources that would be useful to a secondary reading teacher. The Reading Rockets website had a lot of good resources for comprehension strategies. Two that I would use as a secondary reading teacher would be QAR and paragraph shrinking. I also thought the resource on writing conferences could be useful. Conferencing is such a powerful tool, and the resources prvided would be helpful in the classroom.

Reading Quest

Reading Quest

I wish I would have learned about this resource sooner! I liked how there were so many resources for teaching reading, and it’s free! One of the resources that I think would be good to use in a secondary classroom is Opinion-Proof. This would be great to use with secondary students, because they would have to form opinions but also give evidence to support their opinion from the text.

Adolescent Literacy

One thing that was beneficial from this website was the section titled Recommendations for Improving Adolescent Literacy. As a secondary reading teacher this section would be useful when developing lessons for the reading classroom because it has skills that should be included in adolescent reading instruction. I also appreciated the book lists that were provided on this website.

The two websites that I found the most interesting and beneficial were "Adolescent Literacy" and "Reading Strategies That Really Work". The Adolescent Literacy website was awesome, due to all of the resources it provides. I liked that in included things specifically for teachers, like their classroom strategies link. I really like that it has graphic organizers and activities for before reading, during reading, and after reading. Teaching vocabulary is an area I would like to grow in. I would use the Frayer Model organizer from this website to do so. I think this would be great to use with secondary students because vocabulary can affect students' comprehension, especially in the different content areas.

The Reading Strategies That Really Work document is so helpful. I think it's wonderful that I can go to any reading strategy and it includes an explanation of the strategy, when to use it, which reading skills it targets, the purposes and goals, and what it looks like. This is something that would be great to use with secondary students - especially the first strategy, "Annolighting a text". The strategy teaches students to highlight important concepts and main ideas from the text versus everything, which many students do. When I think back to high school I don't think I was ever taught how to properly highlight and mark up the text, and if I was, it would have really benefitted me in college. I will definitely use this document this year, especially with the strategy of finding the main idea of a text. I find that fourth graders struggle with finding the main idea, and especially differentiating between main idea and theme. This is a wonderful resource!

I really liked the Reading Strategies that Really Work Packet. I appreciated how it was easy to navigate, it talked about what the strategy was, and showed what the strategy looked like. I can see myself using this to plan lessons based on targeted reading skills. A few strategies that stood out to me were Strategy 2—Annotating a Text, 3—The Main Idea Strategy, and 17—Questions Only. I personally was never taught how to annotate a text. This would have helped me especially as I progressed through college. I also think students have a difficult time asking questions about what they read. Asking questions can help students take useful notes and understand content better. I remember highlighting things I thought were important but did not ask myself questions to help me digest the content. I want to make my students’ lives easier by giving them tools to help them be more independent.

I also liked the Vimeo: TC Reading and Writing Project/Collections website. I learn best by watching others teach and trying their strategies with my students. These videos do an awesome job of modeling research-based teaching strategies taught by superb teachers. Users can select the grade they would like to watch and then the skill--VERY COOL!

All About Adolescent Literacy

I liked how this website provided a variety of classroom strategies, with templates, that can be downloaded and used when working with students on before, during, and after reading strategies. Each strategy provides the teacher with recommendations on how to use each strategy as well as the benefits of the instructional strategy that could also be shared with parents in order to help their reader at home. The strategies also show which area of focus the students are working on (writing, vocabulary, or comprehension) and how they can be used and applied in different content areas. I can definitely see myself printing these templates and using them within a small or large group setting.

“Reading Strategies That Really Work”

I really liked this packet and how it provided reading strategies for improving reading skills. I liked how there was a table of contents that listed all strategies, how each strategy was outlined and organized, and how it is in one document that can be easy to reference back to. Each strategy then listed targeted skills, when this strategy will be used, what the strategy is, purpose or goal of the strategy, what the strategy looks like when doing it with students, example of the strategy, as well as pictures or graphic organizers that show how the teacher used the template.

Reading Strategies That Really Work!
This resource gave so many awesome strategies that I think are require higher level thinking. I love that each strategy was descriptive in what it should look like in the classroom as well as most gave an example of the strategy in action. I also really appreciated how it told us when during your lesson this would be used: before, during or after reading. One of the most useful strategies that I took away from this resource were the ones on main idea/detail. This skill is very difficult for students to grasp without multiple choice. But I love the strategies with highlighting specific words for main idea in one color and details in another color to decipher the main point the author is making. Definitely printing this resource!

Vimeo: TC Reading and Writing Project
One of the best ways I believe we can grow as teachers is simply by watching other teachers. This resource allows us to watch so many different lessons including both reading and writing at multiple grade levels. I love being able to watch other teachers and implement some of their strategies and talking cues into my teaching. I also love Lucy Calkins and believe in her work so I appreciate that as well. I am looking forward to watching more of these videos.

Samantha

Reading Rockets

This site was full of resources that both parents and educators can use. A few of the tabs I searched through included: Research & Reports, Free Reading Guides, PBS Young Readers Series, and Reading Adventure Packs. There are links, articles, and videos for students, parents, and educators. As a secondary reading instructor, I would use this site for classroom strategies as well as reading and writing strategies. A lot of times I find myself looking through sites like this, I am looking for help with students who are struggling readers, tough situations in the classroom, or lesson ideas. Reading Rockets has another amazing resource to help pinpoint where a child is struggling with reading, what it looks like from the child's, parent's, and instructor's perspective, and how to help. This is awesome because sometimes pinpointing where the breaking point is can be difficult, especially as students get older.

Vimeo: TC Reading and Writing Project

I loved this website the second I opened it. Just like our students, instructors learn through modeling, guidance, and practice. Being able to watch what a mini-lesson or whole group lesson looks like for different topics is extremely helpful. I love seeing what kind of setup and classroom management other teachers are using to create a positive and engaging learning environment. I look forward to watching some more of these videos and incorporating what I've learned into my own lessons and classroom.

Emily

When looking at the sites I first looked at how friendly they were when it can to using them and I found all to be easy enough to navigate. I then looked for ready resources that were there for me to use. I like to have things that I can quickly access and either save for later use or reference for instruction. I really liked that the Adolescent Literacy guide that gave me a quick reference of things to use for specific areas of struggle with students. I also like the Reading strategies that Really work packet for a more detailed look at specific skills to teach with examples. This would be a great resource to print off to use in instruction of specific reading skills.
The vimeo site was one that would be good to bookmark. These videos would be great for when you need that little refresher of how to do something or just to see someone else do something. I learn so much from watching others and this site would do that.

Under hot topics there was information on motivation, assistive technology, and fluency. All things I think will be useful in the future.
