Review: This was one of my favorite novels! This is a story of Astrid, who is currently 12 years old. Astrid and her best friend begin to have different interest; Astrid signs up for roller derby while her friend goes to dance camp. As the novel unfolds, you see that Astrid must adjust to life with new friends and new experiences. This is a heartwarming tale of a girl trying to find herself, and her identity apart from familiar friends and comfort zones. 
Age/Audience: I find that this novel would most likely appeal to 5-8 grade girls the most because I feel girls may be going through similar situations.

Review: This book series is basically a collection of simple mystery/kid detective type books. All of the stories feature the same characters, Donald, Josh, and Ruth! These are easy readers for students, and are very light-hearted stories.
Age Audience: Grades 2-5; Great for students who are interested in detective/mystery stories that are light-hearted and feature a group of kid detectives.

Review: This is a story about a Hobbit names Bilbo Baggins, and his boring routine life. That is, until a famous wizard (Gandalf) and dwarves come to his home. They try to whisk him away onto an adventure to retrieve a treasure that is guarded by Smaug the Magnificent. Through Bilbo's journey he finds himself unravelling from his sheltered life, and seeking a life of adventure, danger, and thrill.
Age/Audience: grades 6-8; This is more for older students or higher-level readers. It is a great read for students who liked the Lord of the Rings novels, or just like adventure.

Review: This is a popular series about a boy whos life was miserable, due to the fact that he lost his parents, and now lives with less than loving relatives. After he receives a mysterious letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he begins to understand the magical powers that are within him. The rest of the story goes onto tell about his journey at Hogwarts, all his adventures, and the friends he makes. 
Age/Audience: 3-8 grades; This is a great read for students who are interested in fantasy books about magic or wizardry. There is also lots of adventure and friendship in this story as well.

Review: This is my favorite book from Chris Van Allsburg! The book itself is comprised of several titles with the first sentence of the book. However, the actual stories behind the cover page and first sentence is a complete mystery. Each cover and sentence evokes strong mystery, and wonder for all who read. 
Age/Audience: grades 4-7; Interesting read for students who like mystery, and imaginative thinking.

Review: This novel is set during the holocaust as German troops storm into Denmark in order to relocate Jews. Annemarie Johansen's family helps to smuggle their dear friend Ellen Rosen to Sweden. This story is told from the perspective of ten year old Annemarie. This is a story of bravery, sacrifice, and the true power of friendship. 
Age/Audience: 4-6 grades; This is interesting for students who like books that have history intertwined and like stories about friendship.

Review: This is a story of adventure, friendship, imagination, and hardship. Jess and Leslie are new friends who build a magical kingdom in their backyard. Together they are inseparable, that is until tragedy strikes. This is truly a powerful coming of age story that will begin to teach students to sympathize with characters on a level they may never have known. 
Age/Audience: Grades 4-8; This is an interesting read for any students who like imaginative books, adventure, and friendship books. 
Teaching Points: I could use this for upper grades in order to teach literacy standards. I could also teach students how to have empathy for characters in a novel.

Review: This book is a wonderful story about a girl named Ally, and her challenge with dyslexia. She is bullied all the time, and she feels that she is "stupid," until she meets her new teacher Mr. Daniels. He cares for her, and sees the magic in her that she never saw in herself. As he coaches her, supports, her and builds her confidence, Ally begins to accept herself and gains the love for herself she never thought she could have. 
Age/Audience: Grades 6-8; This book is great for students who may struggle with a learning disability, or just like stories about young people who overcome tough obstacles in life. Review: This is a twist on the traditional Cinderella fairytale. This book is about a strong, independent girl who dreams of fixing rockets (with the help of her fairy godrobot, of course.) She must help the prince fix his spaceship in order for him to get to the ball. This is a favorite of mine because the girl in the story is not a damsel in distress, but rather powerful and strong!
Age/Audience: K-2; This book is great for kids who like familiar characters with a twist! This is a book full of action, adventure, graphics, and a strong female lead!
Teaching Points: I could see myself using this as a book to compare other Cinderella literature books. Review: This is a beautifully illustrated picture book about a boy named CJ and his grandmother. Each day they take the bus through the city and enjoy their routine of the familiar faces and views. CJ's grandmother teaches him to see the beauty of the world they live in, and to enjoy life for what you have-not what you don't. 
Age/Audience: Pre-k-2nd grades; this is a great book for students who like bright and beautiful picture books. It also is good for students who like to learn lessons/morals from stories. 
Teaching Point: I could use this book to teach students about their own communities, and their cultural backgrounds.

Review: This is an inspiring book about a 1950s Harlem girl who dreams of becoming a ballerina. She works hard to surpass the obstacles of her generation to become the first African American prima ballerina. Through hard work and dedication, she shows others around her that dreams come true as long as you work hard and never give up! 
Age/Audience: K-3 Grades; This is a great book for any student who is interested in dance, ballet, and history. It is an inspiring story that I think girls will relate to the most.
Possible Teaching Point: This book could be used to teach children about how to follow their dreams, and about the civil rights era.
