This brings out the theme of social class, as Terukichi’s ignorance and disrespect in that scene reflect the superiority the ‘high class’ holds over the ‘low class’ / poor islanders, such as Shinji’s family.

Shows tradition and respect to her dead husband, and brings out the significance of marriage to Utajima.

This quote shows Shinji’s mother's approval of Hatsue, as well as her appreciation and a newfound respect for Hatsue after the abalone diving contest.

Shinji’s mother confronts Uncle Teru and tries to champion her son’s innocence. Her confidence in getting Shinji and Hatsue married shows her motherly duty when it comes to her children.

Link to themes:
“The mother’s simple, the straightforward heart had immediately understood the modesty and respect behind the girl’s gesture.” 

This scene defies the established idea of social class within the novel, as Shinji’s mother understands Hatsue’s ‘apology’ gesture for Uncle Teru’s disrespect as Shinji’s mother tried to champion her son’s innocence. The barrier of social class is overcome and foreshadows the growing bond between Shinji and Hatsue’s family.
