Guyana's cultural richness is reflected in the variety of festivals it celebrates. Inspired by Native American festivities, Mashramani is a national holiday honoring Guyana's independence. Other celebrations like Diwali and Phagwa are big among the Hindu community. Diwali is the Festival of Lights. Diyas, (handmade candles made with cotton and ghee) are used to decorate houses in celebration of this holiday. To celebrate the goddess Lakshmi, families offer prayers and sweets, and many enjoy setting off fireworks. The festival of colors known as Phagwah, or Holi, is celebrated with festive get-togethers. To celebrate the coming of spring and the victory of good over evil, people dance, sing folk songs, play with colored powder, and exchange traditional delicacies.
