One of the ideological approaches in film criticism is race, which studies films based on their depictions of different races. The first movie that came to mind was Gone With The Wind (1939). It takes place during the Civil War Era (US) and shows the dynamic between White and Black people. White people are the majority, they are wealthier, and they have more social power, while the Black people are slaves. The film showed the obvious divide between the two races, but also showed the ideologies of the filmmakers at the time. For example, the slaves were shown as being happy, carefree, and wanting to serve their owners. This was written by White writers who were ignorant to the true role of Black slaves during the Civil War Era. It was interesting to analyze the film (and its ideologies) today, especially now that we have a better grasp of the history during that time.

As mentioned, Women have been represented poorly in early Disney films, showcasing women as dependent on men and finding love as their main goal and character trait. Films from this genre also depicted a women's value based on how attractive they were as well as being youthful. These ideologies were likely translated from early fairytales which showcased the same stigmas. It seemed as though people during those times had those notions about women. The little mermaid represents this
