• Born in March 16th of 1849 in Wiesbaden, Nassau, Germany.

• He was educated at the universities of Halle and Leipzig. He taught at the gymnasium at Wiesbaden and at Leipzig, and in 1872-77 was assistant at the Russian Institute of Classical Philology at the latter.

• Died in June 29th of 1919 at the age of 70.
