This effect has been well researched, but we often hesitate when we think about giving some of our precious time to let the kids follow their passions. Today we saw a variety of examples that had OUR students follow their passions (to varying degrees) and with varying degrees of support that resulted in amazing products! 
We can do this. We have done this.
We are thinking about having a self-directed individual project in which students must relate course content to an area of their interest, with a requirement that SHSM students choose a topic that relates to their major.
