One of the key challenges ping pong players face is returning shots that have spin. The first step in returning a spin shot is identifying the type of spin. 

First, observe the motion of the opponent’s racket, also called a paddle. If the player moves the racket from low to high, you will face a topspin shot. Conversely, if the player moves the racket from high to low, you will face a backspin shot. Sideways movement of the racket attaches sidespin to the right or left side.

Once you have identified the spin, you can angle your racket appropriately for the return. When returning a topspin shot, angle the racket downward and make contact with the ball above its center. Do the opposite for a shot with backspin.

Sidespin is a little more difficult to counter. For right sidespin, angle your racket’s leading face right and hit the ball left of its center line.
