In February 2012 Trayvon Martin, 17, was murdered in Sanford Florida by then ‘neighborhood watch captain’ George Zimmerman. At the time of his death Trayvon Martin was unarmed and his death caused a national uproar against police brutality, an issue that is deep seeded in American history. It wasn’t until 2013 that three Black women banded together to organize the Black Lives Matter movement which is focused on racial change as a response to the acquittal of Trayvon’s murder by George Zimmerman. The movement has continued to gain traction since the deaths of Mike Brown in 2014 by Ferguson police and most recently and majorly protested death of George Floyd by Minneapolis Police murdered by Office Derek Chauvin who was later charged with third-degree murder. The vast expanse of social media has allowed people to use their voices and privilege to speak up and against racial inequality and police brutality.

Since the Black Lives Matter movement gained traction through the advent of social media many young citizens of the United States have armed their voices and taken to the streets to protest in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Twitter was among one of the first platforms to spread information of important protests in large cities and those who have suffered the most in terms of police brutality. Since 2014, along with the growth of various different social media platforms, Instagram has also helped in the spread of the movement. Summer 2020 saw a huge leap in the spread of information and infographics after the death of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. As a result, the protests have divided the nation and started what many are calling another Civil Rights movement. The consequences are still at large, and they continue to grow and affect different communities in various different ways. It does not seem likely that the movement will die down until there is some middle ground that is reached.

The Black Lives Matter movement is important because it is a social movement that openly advocates for non-violent protesting and civil disobedience against government and police brutality. This movement is an extremely important and crucial step towards the acknowledgement of people of color in a powerful attempt to advocate for equality of people of color within our society. This movement is also important because of the history of mistreatment and injustices toward black people, which we can still see happening in the US today in our communities and through published studies. The movement helps bring organization and cohesiveness to the fight for justice and equality.

#SayHerName first experienced waves of popularity in 2014 after being launched by the African American Policy Reform(AAPF)as a way to raise awareness to the issues and stories of Black women and girls who have been victims of police violence. 2015 saw the death of Sandra Bland on July 16th in the hands of police officers, after three days in jail Bland was found dead. 2020 witnessed the reemergence of this hashtag after the murder of Breonna Taylor at her home in Louisville Kentucky by plainclothes police officers. The main goal of the campaign and hashtag is to bring awareness of the often ignored names and stories while supporting family of the victims and awareness to larger communities. (X) #SayHerName is made for Black women and other women of color to share their stories and allow for their voices to be heard by larger communities. #BlackLivesMatter strengthened this hashtag and since inspired many others to speak up against racial injustice.

#BlackLivesMatter began trending on Twitter after the killing of 17 year old Trayvon Martin in February 2012. Martin's death sparked the nation to stand up for racial injustice and police brutality, while it has been an issue for decades various social media outlets such as Twitter and Instagram has gained interest of the nation and called for protests against police brutality. #BlackLivesMatter is important because it brings the conversation of police brutality and violent acts against Black people to the front lines. The hashtag is a response to the anti-black racism that runs rampant in American culture and the main goal is to rebuild and gain traction for the Black liberation movement. In 2020 there has been a wide spread of anti-black violence as seen in the cases of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and 15 year old Quawan Charles. If it were not for these hashtags then the deaths would not be as wide spread and very few people would know very little to nothing about the issues the world faces in the hands of a racist and oppressive society.

In order to learn about the movement millionss of users across various platforms such as Twitter and Instagram have done their own research on these hashtags to draw their own conclusion. #BlackLivesMatter #SayHerName and #BlackVotesMatter are just some of a few upon many of different hashtags used to spread useful information which stresses the importance of these movements. #BlackLivesMatter being one of the first of these hashtags has allowed for the powerful and independent voices of minorities, voices that in the past may have been silenced, the opportunity to speak out against racism and the injustices and prejudices they commonly face in their lives in an attempt to bring attention to very serious issues that impact their daily lives.
